Rory Preiss finishes with a double-double in win over Gonzales

Canyon Lake started their season in grand style as they walloped Gonzales, 70-32 on their first District 26-4A game.

“We did exactly what we needed to do and played well,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said with a smile. “We did a good job of looking like we were playing during the first of this season.”

The Hawks had 3 players breaking double digit scoring as Rory Preiss finished with a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

“We went out and did what we needed to do and played hard and did not sink to their level of play,” Preiss pressed.

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks started their District 26-4A season with a win over Yoakum, 38-26 before the Christmas Break and will now see if they can improve on that record when Gonzales comes to town this Saturday.

CL’s defense was the key in this win as the Hawks had a season best 20 steals as Alexa Ramos coming within just 2 steal in reaching double figures.

CL Hawks Basketball Open District Play, January 2nd at 12 Noon

Thursday, December 31st, 2015

The Hawks finished non district play this week after a 1-3 record in the Fredericksburg Tourney.

Will Gray is hoping the Hawks are prepared for start of the District Season.

Will Gray is hoping the Hawks are prepared for start of the District Season.

Now Canyon Lake will see if they can put their best foot forward for another try of making the playoffs.

The ReSporter caught up with Head Coach Lucas Chapman to talk about how this team will perform.

The ReSporter: What was your main problem in the Tourney this past week?

Coach Chapman: “Poor defense and turnovers. We shot the ball pretty well from the field during the tournament, but when you turn it over you waste possessions and you can’t score. We also did a poor job of keeping teams out of the paint defensively, and allowing a few opposing players to put up some big points against us.”

The ReSporter:  Did see some good things studying the stats, Will Gray did keep his turnover rate low and also led the team in rebounds for those 4 games. Is having Gray lead in rebounds a good stat to have?
Coach Chapman: “I think a lot of that had to do with our poor defense and really not having many opportunities to rebound the ball defensively. I don’t think we did a bad job of rebounding during the tournament, and I don’t necessarily care who gets the rebounds as long as they are wearing green and gold.” (more…)

Good-Bye 2015 & Hello 2016

Hawks Celebrate in one of their 33 Victories this season.

Hawks Celebrate in one of their 33 Victories this season.

The Fall Season of 2015 had an historic moment as the CL Volleyball team pulled off a District Championship which was the first for the Hawk Nation.

If you were looking at teams for Canyon Lake and projecting the first team to get to that feat, then Volleyball would have been near the bottom as the Hawk District has been controlled by Wimberley and seeing a team upend their streak of District Championships would have been a hard sell.

Yes, Wimberley did not have a vintage year but CL’s Volleyball team would also reach the highest State Ranking for any sport when they topped out at No. 7 during this season.

Hawks JV & Varsity Come up Short in Loss to Boerne

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity Missed 3 Pointer Shy of Win

Guard Ryner Martin scored 18 points on 6 3point shots

Guard Ryner Martin scored 18 points on 6 3point shots

CLJV started their game with Boerne in a hole as the Greyhounds literally scored 14 of the first 17 points in the contest.

But that is when the Hawks would finally open the lid off their goal and got their offense in gear.

In the last 2 minutes of the first quarter, Canyon Lake would unleash four 3 pointers to take the lead after the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, 16-15.

That show was from the shot of Ryner Martin and Bennie Brownlee to end that stanza.

These two sharp shooters finished with 18 and 11 points respectfully.

Ryner made three 3pointers and Brownlee topped that with a 4 point play on his made 3point goal.

Coaches Corner with Lucas Chapman

Hilltop ReSorter: What will you do different in your game with Boerne after last week’s convincing loss?

GO HAWKS!!

       GO HAWKS!!

Coach Chapman: “We will definitely work some more zone offensive stuff. We hadn’t really played a zone team all year, so we haven’t had much work against it. We will really emphasize and focus on attacking a zone today and tomorrow during practice. We will also hopefully show up and play with much more passion and effort than we did on Saturday.”

The ReSporter: This game on Friday will tell if the team can come back from that loss like they have been coming back in deficits during an actual game such as last night’s affair.

Coach Chapman: “Yeah it will be a good barometer of who we really are. Boerne is definitely not 30 points better than us, but if we don’t show up and get after it then that result can happen. I just want us to go out and compete and get after it. When we do that we can compete with anyone.”

The ReSporter: What are some victories you can take from the games up to this point? (more…)

Rory Preiss finishes with a double-double in win over Pleasanton

Canyon Lake held Pleasanton to 20 points below their season average in their win Tuesday night on the road, 55-38.

The Hawk’s shooting percentage was not good but that part of the game was overcome on the offensive glass as CL finished with 16 offensive rebounds.

A slow start in scoring 17 points in that first half had Canyon Lake looking at a 6 point deficit coming out of their locker for the second round of play, 17-23.

“We forced them into 33 turnovers,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We picked up our defensive pressure, which caused them to make mistakes and take poor shots….I was very pleased with our defensive intensity and our guards did a great job of pressuring the ball.”

Canyon Lake was also having a turnover epidemic in that first half as they committed 16 contributing to their slow start.

Hawks Finish First Day of Tournament, 1-1 after Losing to Blanco

Canyon Lake finished their first day of tournament play at the Canyon Lake Classic Tournament on Friday evening beating Lockhart and losing to Blanco.

The Hawks lost to Blanco in overtime as CL was down 15 points in the 3rd Quarter, 51-36 at the 4:03 mark.

Canyon Lake then outscored Blanco with great defense and timely offense by finishing that last part of the quarter outscoring the Panthers 10-0.

The Hawks then started the 4th Quarter outscoring Blanco 11-2 which would give CL their largest lead, 59-53 but the game would end with both teams more than a 2 point advantage until the final horn.

In the Lockhart game, the Hawks, rushed out to a 15-2 start and used that advantage for the remainder of the game.

Hawk Defense readies for a Big Play

Hawk Defense readies for a Big Play

Canyon Lake’s defensive side of the ball will be highlighted here as the Hawks will be losing some key elements from this past season.

This year’s Senior Class was not a large group of players but the ones that played were on top of their game as the stats below will bellow.

Haden Lee will go down as one of the best all around defensive players Canyon Lake has ever had. If you wanted anything from a tackle to a pass break-up, then Lee would be the guy in the mix.

Robert Woods and Matt Adams would also be on that short list as both of these players might have even better numbers if they were not being borrowed for the offensive side of the ball.

These and the other Seniors will certainly be missed this next season as we will be ready to receive this next group of players that will make their mark as a Hawk.
