Softball Hawks can’t hold Lead to Texans, 12-5

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

CL’s Softball team was finally subdued by the Texans as they lost their lead and were succumbed, 12-5 on

Senior Vicky Henderson

Tuesday night.

The Hawks had a one run lead when errors and walks finally took its toll and caused an eight run inning that was too much to overcome.

Kelsey Ahrens and Liz Henderson both led Canyon Lake with two hits a piece.

Vicky Henderson had a squeeze bunt and two rbi’s in this contest that kept this game in limbo until that last inning.

The Hawks outhit Wimberley but they also out errored the Texans and just gave our friends to the north too many base runners adding in all of the free passes (walks).

Canyon Lake will turn around for another game in Boerne this Thursday as they will try to get back on track before the Easter Break.

JV Hawks have Walk in the Park in Wins over Wimberley, 9-5 and 7-6

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Hawks had a walk in the park with two wins in Wimberley on a cold Monday night.

Pitcher Hayden Dubois Wins Nightcap of Double Header Sweep in Wimberley

Canyon Lake outhit the Texans by 13, but walking nine players kept this game close as the Hawks completed a double header sweep after a 7-6 win in their first game.

“We won two tight ball games tonight,” Coach Brian Owens said. “It is those little things with the teams enthusiasm and communication on the field that win tight ball games.”

“Nick Kissell, coming in for Austin Headrick in that first game when the game was on the line and holding Wimberley that allowed us to comeback and William Volz doing the same thing in game two.”

Starting pitcher, Hayden Dubois had a no-hitter when Coach Owens went to the mound in the bottom of the fourth after allowing a couple of runs on walks.

Yes, it was a no hitter, but with seven walks Dubois certainly did not have command of the plate on this night.

“I went to get him because he was getting tired,” Coach Owens said. “He played hard in that first game and his legs were dead.”

On if he thought about letting Dubois continued pitching since he had a no hitter, “I did not even know he had a no hitter. But even if I did know, he (Dubois) would not complain because he is a team player.”

Lady Hawks Track and Field District Standings

Sophomore Mariah Ellis in 4x400 Relay

The Lady Hawks have an impressive team with many athletes taking their skills to another level.

These students below have been researched from meets they have scored in so far this season.

Boerne is the only one team with no results posted from last week. All of District 27-3A other teams are up to date and this is how they would finish if the meet was held this week.

Also, this is not an exact science since these times and distances were held on different days and weather conditions.

Just read and enjoy  a ‘what if’ they ran a District 27-3A Track Meet yesterday results below.

One more item to consider: Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity would score more points that Boerne and so you will see our JV times and distances below and those points have also been posted to the Hawks Varsity point total.

Except for the Relay Events. Yes, the JV has better times than other district teams….Impressive.

Boy’s Track District Standings

Sunday, March 24th, 2013

The ReSporter goes through track results of each District 27-3A school and compares each athlete to

Senior Eduardo Covarrubias in Last Year's 4x400 Relay

see where they would place against each other if that event was held today.

Things to remember while looking over the following results.

1. Fredericksburg has not been posted yet…still waiting on results.
2. There are mistakes with papers which makes this  not as exact.
3. Track meets are held in different areas of the state so wind and weather needs to be given some wait. No wind in one meet might result in better times in other meets.
4. Competition, many athletes might not have made a high enough place to get their results printed. (Ex. Athlete ‘A’ had a 52 second 400 meter run but did not finish in that meets top six. That would result in no points for the team and their result not being published)

The ReSporter gets all of Canyon Lake’s results and can see where they would score, but other schools that would not happen. This would help show the CLJV where they stand in district.

Also, being a ‘Homer’, The ReSporter will always give Canyon Lake’s athletes all ties which means more points for the home team.

Final point: Canyon Lake has had the best 1600 Meter Relay team in this region the past couple of years and has not had a good showing yet giving  several points to other District 27-3A teams and hence a very close race as you can see below.

Fredericksburg is still the team to beat this season mainly based on having so many athletes, so when a CL athlete does not compete in more than one event, then that will also hurt a team’s point total.

Hawks and Texans were All-Tied up after Doubleheader Soccer Games

Saturday, March 23rd, 2013

Lady Hawks Soccer Team are now going where no CL Team Sport has gone in these past two years,

Two Football years
Two Basketball years
Two Volleyball years
….you get the idea, it has been a while for the Hawks and now hopefully there might be more sports to follow.

Yes, Canyon Lake has finished higher in Track and Field these past couple of years, but Track doesn’t go as a team after district has finished.

The Hawks needed a win for finishing in third place outright, but another tie would have a different way of determining how these two teams would be put in their respected playoff brackets.

So, Head Coach Katie McWhorter would need to win a coin flip to decide which team might face the 6th ranked team in State for their first round opponent.

Both teams could only muster a goal a piece for this dramatic finish. No, not a penalty kick, just a coin flip.

“I was able to call the flip,” Coach McWhorter said. “Before I called the coin toss, I asked my team captains what they wanted me to call. Lauren Justis had to sit out this game due to a concussion, and she and Jasmine Smith have been great leaders for the team this year, so I really felt it was their call to make. Jasmine asked me to call heads, and we ended up winning the tie breaker with that.”

Lady Hawks Can’t Plug Dam in Loss to Bandera, 12-2

Saturday, March 23rd, 2013

The Lady Hawks had the lead and then a dam broke and C-Lake could not hold the Bulldogs in their 12-2 loss on Friday night at Hawk Field.

Canyon Lake had just one error in those first three innings and a small one run lead and showed much promise.

There were however a lot of errors in that Lake and when that dam broke, CL had seven in their last three innings of work.

“We played hard early and had momentum and that one inning did us in,” Head Coach John Gallagher surmised. “We need to overcome those mistakes, but once it started, then it just got worse.”

First Three Innings Second Three Innings
Hits given up 0 8
Runs given up 0 12
Errors committed 1 7

Night and day for Canyon Lake and when those leaks started the Hawks did not have enough fingers to plug all those holes in that dam and the inevitable happened forming a Canyon within minutes.

Alexis Robinson did reach base all three plate appearances and Kelsey Ahrens did have a shot that almost cleared the fences but it was way too little to help save this dam.

Now Canyon Lake will travel to Wimberley this next Tuesday with a game that hopefully they can keep that momentum for a whole game.

Saturday, March 23rd, 2013

Hawks lost points for Track and Field when several athletes were dancing out of their blocks for Thursday night in San Antonio while CL was competing in Wimberley.

Canyon Lake hopes to have all of their athletes next week when the Hawks host their meet on Thursday before Easter Break.

Lady Hawks Continue to Improve this Track Season

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

Hawks Girls Track team finished with 45 points in the Texan Relays on Thursday, March 21 in Wimberley.

Triple Jump seems to be that one event that is the in thing to do. Maybe this has evolved from Marisa Ellis reaching State last season.

If you put all the Triple Jump distances down for District 27-3A competitors, then you would have the following points from this one event:

Place Name Distance Team Points
 1st Marisa Ellis 36'4 Hawks 10
 2nd Singleton 34'7.5 Fredericksburg 8
 3rd Trena Lorett 33'5 Hawks 6
 4th Mariah Ells 33'4 Hawks 4
 5th Shapiro 32'7 Wimberley 2
 6th Bailey Drum 32'6 Hawks 1
 7th Halley McKnight 32'4 Hawks

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity finished 3rd place beating out several larger schools. (Marble Falls, Lehman, Dripping Springs and other schools.

Christian Dittman is Vaulting Where no Hawk has Gone Before

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

Canyon Lake has had some good Pole Vaulters in past seasons and this year

Junior Christian Dittman, Vaulting where know Hawk has gone before.

Christian Dittman seems to be ready to raise that bar.

Pole Vaulting is one track event that fans are drawn to since it has so many areas an athlete needs to excel in to realize a good result.

Being coordinated to make your pole stick while running with a good amount of speed and then having that ability to accelerate off the ground to push into the air over 13 feet (in this case) in the air.

Dittman was sailing along in Wimberley on Thursday night in clearing 13’6 by what seemed to be one to two feet. Dittman had also made his lower marks by clearing that same bar with ease.

The event steward then moved the bar to 14′ with just three competitors left on this evening.

That height would be a personal record in a meet for Dittman and you could see his determination as he readied himself for his three tries to conquer another rung on this proverbial ladder.
