Softball: Circles are more Valuable than Diamonds

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

In Softball everything starts in a Circle with a Diamond taking second fiddle.

A Smiling Freshman Pitcher Alexis Robinson

Yes, the diamond is still needed for this game but if you don’t have someone that you can count on in that Circle, then a diamond might not matter.

Canyon Lake has had a very good pitcher the past four years in Missy Romero and now that baton has been passed to a Freshman in Alexis Robinson.

Robinson is another one of those Freshman athletes that has come onto the scene this year and if this trend continues, Canyon Lake will be very competitive for many of their sports.

The Freshman Basketball team finished 18-4 and in Volleyball, CL had four Freshman that moved up to Junior Varsity and Varsity this year and still had a very competitive team on the court as a Freshman team.

Now it is Softball’s turn to have the honors. Robinson will go into the circle and try to continue a Hawk team that missed the playoffs by just one game last year.

“I am just going to play my game,” Robinson started. “I just want to enjoy my four years of softball and play as hard as I can.”

Robinson also talked about who she has taken that baton from and had nothing but great things to say about her friend and teammate (in Select Softball) Romero.

Soccer: Lady Hawks Start District 53-4A Tonight

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

Canyon Lake’ s Lady Hawks will invoke on their District Season that gives them a chance for making the playoffs.

With a district that has five teams and having four teams that can qualify for a longer season (playoffs), then you can conclude that there will be only one team that is out of that realm of going farther.

Looking at pre district games you have three teams that will be fighting for those two spots.

Dripping Springs and Schertz Clemens will be on top of the food chain and Canyon Lake will be fighting it out with Seguin and Wimberley.

All three teams (CL, Wimberley, and Seguin) played one common opponent this pre-season.

Floresville had this privilege of playing all three teams so you can have a small glimpse of each teams strength.

Canyon Lake was the one team that beat Floresville while Wimberley and Seguin were both shut out by the Jaguars.

Next, you need to see when these games were played to help in deciphering how district games might play out.

Floresville beat Seguin just last week, 4-0 in Matador stadium. So a home game loss for Seguin and also a recent game is a good barometer on how this team might play when they are on the field against your Hawks.

Coaches Corner with Soccer Coach Katie McWhorter

Monday, February 11th, 2013

The ReSporter: You have been playing some teams that are two classes larger than CL. What are you wanting the girls to take from games like this as you prepare for District?

Coach McWhorter: “Our preseason schedule has no doubt been rigorous and jam-packed. As we prepare for district and play these games, I think that the team should get a better understanding of what we are going to be up against. Although our district has changed since last year, we are going to be up against some competitive teams who come from larger school districts. We need to get a feel of what teams like that are like in the preseason.”

The ReSporter: How many teams in district will qualify for the Playoffs?

Coach McWhorter: “The top four teams in our district will qualify for playoffs this year.”

CL Varsity Lose Last Home Game to Billies, 54-43

Saturday, February 9th, 2013

Fredericksburg has taken their 3A status to heart as they will shoot and make 3pointers at will to bury a team.

Canyon Lake was in this game and made several runs at this Billie team but there was always an answer in the form of a three pointer and 99% of the time that shot would find the bottom of the net.

The Hawks did shoot in the 30% range throughout this contest which did not help when your opponent is shooting over 50% from that 3 point circle.

CL has one consolation in that Fredericksburg is not a 4A school giving them another point to add onto their scoring.

This was the last night for several Seniors that was in their last home game.

Chandler Faulkner is one of those players that gives several intangibles for the Hawks that won’t always show up in a stat line.

Coach Lucas Chapman has used Faulkner as his go to guy when needing to a shut down defensive (more…)

Hawk Freshman Leave too Many Points on Court, Lose 59-45

Saturday, February 9th, 2013

Canyon Lake Freshman suffered a subpar second quarter that was too much to rekindle in their loss to Fredericksburg, 59-45.

A three for fourteen from the field in that quarter was enough to bury the Hawks while Fredericksburg buried three pointer after three pointer.

Both teams were evenly matched for the other three quarters as Robert Woods once again had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Hayden Lee also had some very nice drives to the basket in helping to keep the Hawks close to their visitors.

Free throws were not free for CL as a 4-13 tally would indicate. Oh yeah, Fredericksburg does use that word ‘Free’ for their Throws.

“I am very proud of the way we played tonight,” Coach John Barthels opened. “This was the first game in a long time that we kept our composure against a press and we up tempo defensively.”

Canyon Lake did have some spurts getting Fredericksburg’s lead back into single digits.

“The score might not reflect good defense, but were where we needed to be initially and force them to be out of rhythm, unfortunately one of the two areas we did not do well was rebounding,” Coach Barthels finished. “We did get 29 points from our big men tonight and I am really looking forward to seeing this group develop next year.”

Hawk’ JV Have Lead for :01.3 seconds in Win over Billies, 58-57

Friday, February 8th, 2013

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity scored eight points in the last 40 seconds to overcome a seven point deficit, beating Fredericksburg last Friday night.

Fredericksburg had a lead or was tied for 31:58.7 of this game and Canyon Lake took over for :01.3 and that lead is still there at this writing.

Having trouble in the first half in getting the ball down the court was the culprit in playing catch up for this game.

The Billies press was not giving the Hawks any chances for shots and proving that Fredericksburg’s 47 point win last go around would be more of the same.

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity had other plans however as they started inching back into this game after intermission.

“The first half we were not attacking Fredericksburg’s press and allowing them to trap us,” Coach Brian Hooper said with his lost voice. “We talked about getting the ball and taking it up the court instead of sitting back and allowing them to trap us.”

“We started dribbling through the press and that was allowing us to get some calls.”

Sean Nolan made his presence known again with just one missed shot in this contest and that miss was retrieved by Nolan with a put back.

Softball: Coaches Corner with John Gallagher/Schedule

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

The ReSporter:What are your thoughts entering this

Head Softball Coach John Gallagher

season?

Coach John Gallagher: “Excited and optimistic about starting a new year. First goal met; starting a Junior Varsity team.”

The ReSporter: How has your practices been going?

Coach John Gallagher: “Practices going well. With the great weather we have been able to maximize our time and stay on schedule. We have 22 young ladies out and they have been working hard to learn the system. The big surprise is we have a few girls with above average speed/quickness.”

The ReSporter: How will you insert the basketball players when they arrive?

Coach John Gallagher: “With the arrival of a few basketball players we are now putting them through a tryout process and trying to solidify our varsity positions and put in our offense/defense.”

Hawk’s Baseball wants to move from Chess to Checkers

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

Canyon Lake Baseball is rounding third as this season gets closer and closer to home base.

Senior Kyler Huff

The Hawks had a forgettable season in 2012, but forgetting last year could be a mistake for this CL team that finally has more than one senior playing.

Those hard knocks put on Canyon Lake are learning tools that might give this year’s team the drive needed to compete and win.

Starting with that 3-22 record, most of that roster was from a Freshman and Sophomore laden class that was playing district foes that were way out of their league.

Bandera was starting all Seniors but one player last season and that is just a sampling of what other teams had on their roster.

There is a band of Seniors that want nothing more than to end this season with some proverbial skins on the wall. That goal can be reached much like three years ago when Canyon Lake’s baseball team not only made the playoffs, but was the first team for Canyon Lake to win in their first round in postseason play.

There has been a report that Head Coach Trent Dunavant might have been smiling while prepping this team for the start of this season.

Get ready, because these next numbers will wipe that smile off your face and replace it with a frown.

Numbers
   3 Wins last season
.227 Team batting average
  90 Runs scored
198 Runs given up on defense
  28 Extra base hits
