CL Lose Game to Billies, 54-37

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

The Hawks could not grab enough momentum from their previous game with Navarro to put a scare on Fredericksburg, as Canyon Lake fell to the Billies by 17 points.

Caleb was the only Hawk to finish with double digit scoring finishing with 12 points in the loss.

Canyon Lake now faces a must win game this Friday at home when Bandera comes to town.

Freshman Hawks Lose in OT against Navarro, 56-55

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

Canyon Lake Freshman Basketbal team lost a tough battle in Navarro last week in overtime, 56-55.

Navarro has a good club, but a bad fourth quarter left little in their tank to win the game in overtime.

“Tavian Soliz went from wing to point guard early and drove the lane and made some plays,” Coach John Barthels commented. “Robert Woods got several offensive rebounds and easy put backs.”

Both players responded with their best game of this season, but more work will be done as this upstart team goes to Fredericksburg today with a game against the Billies.

Hawk Hoops Happenings

Sunday, January 20th, 2013

Canyon Lake’s Girls and Boys basketball teams do not need to win every game on their schedule, but there will be some important games played by other schools that will have a say on how the Hawks will fare in finishing district.

The Lady Hawks are now embarking on their final run through district starting this Tuesday when they host Fredericksburg.

In District 27-3A play you have Navarro and Boerne who have separated from the other four schools.

Now it is up to CL to win enough games this second round to get a ticket for a playoff spot.

In the first round Fredericksburg won a pivotal game against Boerne which helps them greatly if they are break even with Wimberley and Canyon Lake to end this season.

Now your Hawks will need to win games with Wimberley, Fredericksburg, and Bandera in order to give them a chance for a playoff game.

What will put them squarely into a playoff game will reside in a win against either Navarro or Boerne. If they can pull that off in this round, then a 5-5 record will put them in a tie with either Wimberley and Fredericksburg.

If Wimberley loses to Navarro, Boerne, and CL, then they will also have that same 5-5 record, but a CL win over one of the two top teams would trump the Texans and give your Hawks an inside trek to a playoff spot.

CL Hawks win first District 27-3A contest against Navarro, 59-54

Saturday, January 19th, 2013

Canyon Lake halted their seven game losing streak with a 59-54 win over Navarro last Friday night in Panther country.

The Hawks last win was against this same team, Navarro in the Randolph Tournament over a month ago.

This win was also the first District win in over two years. Yes, CL won a forfeit game two years ago against SA Hawkins, but this was an actual win which certainly means more.

Canyon Lake’s last win in district was 24 games counting that forfeit win with Hawkins. You would go back to 26 district games, when the Hawks beat Ingram Moore, 81-73 February 9th, 2010.

Paul Davis was on for this evenings game scoring 25 points while Andrew Riali finished with 17 points.

Caleb Kreiger contributed 12 rebounds and four blocks to his resume. With his next block he will pass Neal Whitehead for the most blocks in Canyon Lake history, both players are tied with 41.

Another milestone could be passed in the Hawks game with Fredericksburg with Point Guard Doug Hubnik needing only five more assists to pass Matt Magness total of 136 in his recently completed career.

Hubnik continues to rack up assists with 103 for this season.

“It was a gut check win, exactly the type of win that we haven’t been able to get the past few years,” a relieved Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “It was a great win and something we can really build on. It was good to finally get over that hump.”

The Hawks will now see what type of building they might be constructing when they face 19th ranked Fredericksburg Billies on their court tonight.

Lady Hawks Lose to Navarro Panthers, 55-34

Friday, January 18th, 2013

Lady Hawks had some good moments against one of the top teams in District 27-3A, but once the dam broke, Canyon Lake could not stop the onslaught as Navarro won going away, 55-34.

Canyon Lake went 10 minutes from the third into the fourth quarter without scoring a bucket while Navarro was scoring 20 points. In that time span, CL could not find any water in their lake and now find themselves needing to reverse this next half of district play with some wins.

The Hawks are not out of the race and if they can find that same feeling of wins from their non-district schedule, then anything can happen.

“We have not put together a full game yet this year,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “We are just not making the changes needed.”

Canyon Lake spent their first two minutes of the second quarter controlling the back board and getting to that foul line.

The result was three points and closing the deficit to four points. Another Canyon Lake seven point run had the Hawks with a lead, 18-17 with over three minutes still to play in the quarter.

Lady Hawks Lose Tough Game with Boerne, 45-32

Thursday, January 17th, 2013

The Lady Hawks played the second half even but still had some problems sinking shots in the first half resulting in a loss to Boerne Greyhounds, 45-32.

Canyon Lake still held Boerne 10 points below their seasonal average but grasping hold of some offensive power would of been a great equalizer.

The Hawks also reduced their turnovers and the free throw percentage was back up but combining a perfect storm is sometimes like catching that prize butterfly on a windy day.

“We played good defense but struggled to score from the outside,” Head Coach MaryBeth Gallagher said. “We tied their score in the second half after making some halftime adjustments, but we just did not get into sinc until the second half.”

Amber Ramsey pulled off a double double with 10 points and 12 rebounds while also getting her patented three to four steals a game.

Canyon Lake will now have another tough opponent on their docket when Navarro comes to visit this Friday night at the Hawk Gym.

Hawk Freshman Lose Lead in Fourth to Boerne, 64-62

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

Canyon Lake Freshman missed a win by three points as the Boerne Greyhounds had a comeback in the fourth quarter outscoring CL by seven points for a two point win, 64-62.

“We played our best game offensively,” Coach John Barthels interjected. “We picked a bad time to play our worst game defensively. We can fix that.”

The Hawks had 11 players scoring points showing off their depth and resolve.

“We were able to get more people involved and had several players step up when we asked them to,” Barthels continued. “We were 17 of 28 from the free throw line after going 8 of 10 against Wimberley, so we have stepped up in the last two games there after shooting just 36% on the year.”

Having so many players involved in games will only help as they take on the tasks of getting their best game going.

“We have really started to play as a team and although we are 0-2 in district I feel we are playing better basketball at the right time,” Coach Barthels finished.

Brandon Ward and Zach Gregory both finished with double figure points with 17 and 12 respectfully.

“We worked as hard as we can to come over the injury,” Gregory said after commenting on losing Joseph Arredondo during the second half. “We will try to work harder in practice and come together as a team more and the wins will come.”

A good game for Canyon Lake as they continue their schedule through District 27-3A.

JV Hawks Can’t Finish in Loss to Boerne, 50-46

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

The Hawk’s Junior Varsity made up nine points in the third quarter but could not finish, losing 50-46 to Boerne.

The second half was a different team for Canyon Lake…again.

“Coach said to stay calm and don’t give up,” Trendon Martinez started. “We came out and we got some traps which resulted in easy baskets. We just need to stay focused and get that energy for the whole game with an unstoppable mindset and keep up a good defense.”

A much more active team in the second half helped as Canyon Lake was much more energetic on the boards and defense, which turned into offense.

Half of CL’s field goals, in that second half, was a result of an assist which tells you how good this offense was humming as this game matured.

Skyler Tschoepe was a recipient of many of those assists as he also made several other shots having one of his best overall games of this season with 19 points.

“Our second half we started off and got some easy baskets and then that led to momentum,” Tschoepe said with resolve. “Our transition points were wide open especially on our three’s.”

Garrett Winters also returned with a three point clinic making five long shots throughout this contest.

Seven different players were credited with an assist while also bringing down that turnover epidemic this team was suffering in their last outing.
