Canyon Lake Boy’s Basketball tipped off their season last Tuesday night at Hawk gym against Stacey, in what proved to be a glorified scrimmage based on having one practice for many of these players.

“We played hard and we have had only one or two practices,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We haven’t had a lot of time to get our feet yet.”

Cedar Creek comes from a larger school setting, which gives those type of schools an upper hand against schools like Canyon Lake that has many players just now coming over from their football season.

The Hawks had a lead of 2-0, but that would be their last chance to be above water, as this Cedar Creek team had plenty of depth and continued to bring players from their bench that could exploit CL, which was just trying to find out who was playing where.

Coach Chapman also had 14 players that he was trying to find out what their skill set would be this early in the season.

Canyon Lake pounced on Comfort, 62-24 as the Hawks extended their record to 3-0, starting this year impressively.

There were several bright spots in this game. CL shot 82% from the field in the third quarter.

Their only two misses were three point attempts, while Canyon Lake controlled the boards. Amber Ramsey had eight points in this quarter.

The Hawks also had more steals than turnovers for this contest. Another 14 assists and a whopping 39 rebounds with 16 of those coming on the offensive side.

“We are more of a team and with this being my second year they are buying into the system,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “This year the team is more focused and with each game we are trying to get better.”

Canyon Lake had three players break double figures, Dulce Brown (10), Olivia Flores (11), and Ramsey (20).

Coach Gallagher: “Yes, Hannah St. John had eight points and Katie Williams scored 23 points. It was a good game to knock the rust off and we battled hard.”

The ReSporter: How was your defense?

Coach Gallagher: “We missed a lot of shots, but we got after it on defense and I was pleased with our effort.”

Canyon Lake got run over by a Reindeer, yes we know that Navarro’s mascot is a Panther, but the Christmas song seemed nicer than the results incurred Friday night at Hawk Stadium, as the Hawks finished a disappointing season, 49-14.

The Hawks first drive had three runs totaling four yards and one completion for 11, giving CL one first down. That first down would be the only conventional play for the rest of the half. (The other two were recorded on those long TD receptions)

That first down would be CL’s only good impact play for a quarter and a half.

While Navarro would rack up 224 yards and four scores during that span, Canyon Lake was still trying to find it’s footing with six total yards on 12 plays.

The longest run in that stint was for two yards while the Hawks were one for five, with that aforementioned 11 yard pass play being their only first down.

Canyon Lake had lived most of this year trying to convert long third down plays. The result was sporadic at best, especially as this season had matured.

Excitement did come into this contest when facing a 28 point deficit, the Hawks unleashed a bright spot for this season with two long pass plays.

With their next two possessions, Canyon Lake had a 65 (Doug Hubnik) and 67 (Daniel Camarillo) yard pass and runs which brought your Hawks to within just two scores going into halftime.

Hubnik caught his pass with a Navarro defensive player holding on for dear life. The play was on a fourth down.

Mountain Valley 7th A squad was much better than this final score as turnovers played a key roll in a, 26-8 loss to Navarro for their last game of this season at Hawk Stadium.

Navarro is not a team you can beat very often when you have the turnover bug. The Panthers are a ground team that can churn out yards while bleeding the clock.

Those two realities were present in this battle, as two fumbles and interception led to a touchdown with a lot of lost time for the visitors and no time to make up the deficit for Mountain Valley.

Navarro had first dibs and moved the ball 64 yards on 11 plays while taking off all but 1:34 left on the first quarter clock.

Then two plays and a fumble for Mountain Valley left the Hawk offense looking from the sideline again. All told, MV had the ball for seven total plays in the first half.

Navarro is a good example of teams that very seldom make mistakes. Just two penalties for seven yards and no turnovers was the difference in this game.

Canyon Lake Freshman finished a very fine season with a six point loss to the District Champions

Navarro Panthers, 34-28 last Thursday night at Hawk Stadium.

CL started the game with an onside kick that was executed to perfection when Brandon Ward pounced on the ball on Navarro’s 44 yard line.

“We were kicking into the wind, so we figured we would have an onside kick,” Coach Levi Montgomery said.

The Hawks struggled on the first drive with their runs, but the pass play was very successful when Joseph Arredondo connected with Tavion Soliz twice, one pass was converting a fourth and seven from the Panther 42 yard line.

Three more running plays, then Arredondo found Soliz for a beautiful pass and catch from 17 yards out for their first score in this game.

Arredondo had his hand wrapped and was not expected to play in this game, “I had a hairline fracture and I did not want to sit out of my last game,” Arredondo said reverently. “My parent’s prayed over it (the hand) and I thought that I would be able to just punt and kick in the game.”

Navarro did not waste much time, as they also moved down the field with nothing but running plays and only two of their nine plays were four yard gains. The rest were consistently in the five to nine yards per hand off.

The 56 yard drive only took 3:35 seconds which gives you an idea of how fast paced their running game was humming.

Navarro passed more on their two point conversions than during the game.

Canyon Lake tied the game at 14 on their third possession with another key pass play to Soliz for 35 yards, setting up the Hawks with a first down on Navarro’s 17 yard line.

Another key play came from the feet of Arredondo as he ran a bee line down the sideline for 11 yards and first down.

The ReSporter: Hey Coach Drum, this week your team will be

facing a known offense and yet it is one of the toughest offenses to control, why?

Coach Drum: “Our biggest problem is simulating this type of offense in practice. They (Navarro) have been running this offense since Seventh Grade and it is just hard to simultate.”

The ReSporter: Tell us a little more about what makes this offense so hard to figure out.

Coach Drum: “There are different keys for the defense. The Defensive Line, Linebackers, and Defensive Backs are all looking for different areas for assignment football.”

The ReSporter: In Navarro’s two losses this season, how did those teams disrupt this Panther team?

Coach Drum: “Wimberley had good penetration and controlled their line of scrimmage. You have to have a good scheme. If you do something to slow them down, then they can counter and they have done a good job doing that this season. Navarro has been successful because they don’t have a lot of turnovers.”

Canyon Lake has just one option this week. Win, and if possible more than 14 points.

Navarro will be bringing their run game to Hawk stadium and if you can think back two years ago, then you might remember over 500 yards gained on the ground by that Panther team.

Navarro only has one loss in District 27-3A competition and that loss was by one point to Wimberley.

Boerne was beaten by 14 points to Navarro leaving just one other choice for Canyon Lake.

If Boerne could beat Wimberley, then Canyon Lake could win by one point over Navarro to squeeze into the third spot in district play. That win would give CL the bid based on head to head action.
