Canyon Lake Track & Field are Short Handed at Texan Relays

McKenzie Ortez newcomer from Wagner HS likes the Relays!!

The Hawk’s Track & Field Team was short handed in their Wimberley Meet with the Girl’s Soccer team being in the heat of their playoff season and add that the Texas Relays depleted the available athletes who would compete.

                  Let’s Go Fast Hawks!!

The Texan’s Relays had 14-15 schools for each division which would further deplete CL from amassing points.

The Lake’s only first place had Carter Williams winning the 300 meter hurdles (46.31) for the Junior Varsity Hawks.

Shayne Moss (11.31) finished 2nd in the 100 meter dash and Cadence Patterson (5:25.40) was 2nd in the Mile Run. Patterson run continued to lower that event as she has dominated the long distance events during the past two campaigns.

Colby Mickey (12-00) placed 3rd in the Varsity Pole Vault and Reagan Reinarz ran (13:51.40) and finished 3rd in the JV 3200 meter run. Another 3rd place had Hannah Harrison with a 4’6 high jump.

Alencia Lentz raised the bat at the Texas Relays with a 13-01.00 pole vault as she continues to have vaults that would put the next (in the future) lady Hawk to beat these marks being in position to compete in the Olympics.

Ayren Lightfoot is ready to compete at her highest level.

Freshman Ayren Lightfoot finished 4th in the 400 meter dash with thoughts of improving to a sub 60 second run which has been done once when Skylar Hurst (58.28) set that mark back during her 2017 track season.

Lightfoot has a best of 62.59 that was run earlier this season.

“I like to run,” Lightfoot said. “I hoping to get past district and that can give me more confidence in knowing that I can compete.”

On what she will need to do to get to an Area Meet? “I just need to push harder and when I run in the relays it is not bout myself but with other people on our team.”

Hannah Hammer is another freshman that has made a mark with a 2:32.87 half mile time that is 1.5 seconds slower than what Patterson has run this year.

There has been 13 present lady tracksters that have etched their name in the All-Time Top 10 so far with the majority of those marks being set by freshman and sophomores.

CL Boys have two athletes, Senior Connor Windham and Junior Helijah Johnson competing against each other in the discus and shot put.

What is interesting about these two would be watching them also compete in running events which is usually not a strength (pardon the pun) for athletes in those type of events.

The ReSporter asked Windham how he got started competing in these events, “In the 7th grade I was picked randomly and I made the team but I was not very good.”

Connor Windham can run and throw as an all-around athlete in Track & Field.

At that age it is probably easier to have young men being able to do anything based on your size being comparable to others in that same grade.

“In the 8th grade during my last meet I was able to beat the school (MVMS) record,” Windham stated. “While competing on the Junior Varsity I finished either 1st or 2nd in every meet”

On how you know if you might have some good throws, “During warm-ups and then I start thinking that I can’t choke or miss it and I have a chance today….I would want to reach 50 feet with the Shot and 150 in the discus.”

What thoughts bout practicing and competing with a fellow Hawk (Johnson)? “We have good competition with each other but I want to set the school record in both events and make the throws so good that Helijah can’t break them the next year…I out throw him in every practice,” Windham said while throwing down the gauntlet.

“Every time we are competing against each other,” Johnson quipped. “With the shot-put it takes more technique and strength and I want to have the record in both!”

This shows how in these two events there is more going on than throwing to beat other schools but an added incentive of beating your teammate for that coveted Top Throw in CL history.

When told what Windham had said, Johnson just smiled.”

Go Fast in Kerrville!!
