Canyon Lake Scored 28 Points in 3rd Quarter in Win Over Uvalde, 41-0
Canyon Lake went to their 2nd half dominating ways and scored 28 points in the 3rd quarter propelling the Hawks to an Area date with Calhoun this Thursday November 17th in Floresville.
The Lake has had the propensity to play around during those two first quarters for much of this season only to unleash a slew of points to finish a game.
On Canyon Lake’s slow starts Coach Drum responded, “Yeah we talked about that during halftime we were a little sloppy in the first half…we didn’t finish drives, had missed tackles, penalties on special teams but we cleaned it up in the 2nd half.”
Coach Drum continued, “That will be our message this week as each round will be tougher and we just can’t have that many mistakes especially early in the ball game.”
That was what happened in this Bi-District affair when 4th Seeded Uvalde was still within sight of the Hawks trailing 13 points coming out of halftime adjustments. Canyon Lake would score 21 points in the first 3 minutes of their 3rd period that closed the doors on these Coyotes, 41-0.
CL’s defense was solid throughout this windy and cold night as Uvalde found it hard to get any traction with their run game. The Coyotes’ first play was a 10 yard run for a first down and that would the longest rushing play on this night.
CL held UHS to a 2.2 rushing average while the defensive backfield (2 interceptions) and wind played havoc on the Coyotes quarterback with 7 completions on 20 attempts.
On the other side of the ball, The Lake would score on their first possession when Helijah Johnson (124 yards) scored on a 11 yarder and a Hawk lead that would turn out to be the only points needed, 7-0.
A sack for Uvalde stopped CL’s next drive before James Garza (82 yards) found a gaping hole on his 46 yard touchdown jaunt, 13-0. That drive was set up when Sophomore Michael Anderson blocked a Coyote lineman into the punter that resulted with no yardage on their punt.
A personal foul penalty on CL would thwart another potential scoring drive late in the half which had a Hawk 13 point lead going into halftime.
Canyon Lake would bring their fireworks out to start the 2nd half and that would see Chase Anderson getting the edge for his 84 yard run down the home field side of the turf for a quick score, 20-0.
That 84 yarder places Chase Anderson as the 6th longest touchdown play and ranks 4th for rushers.

Not converting a 4th down for Uvalde on their next possession had C-Lake needing 25 yards for their next score and with a facemask penalty it took 3 plays when Johnson capped off this drive by knocking Coyotes’ like bowling pins for 9 yards, 27-0.
On Uvalde’s next play it was Chase Anderson with a pick-six that had his 19 yard return nixed but Canyon Lake would see a Hunter Anderson pass to Cole Cason 25 yard pass and catch for the next score, 34-0.
Cason’s last touchdown was 2 years earlier on a 2 yard run that had this young man sustaining an injury that has had his career in mothballs and this being his first campaign without any ill effects. Cason’s touchdown was clean as no Uvalde player was within 20 yards on this play.
An encore would have Cason with a 6 yard touchdown on CL’s next drive as this run had Offensive Lineman Quinton Pearn shredding would be tacklers allowing Cason to follow this friendly lineman.
How much Shredding? The press box had to go to a replay of the play to find out who the actual rusher was as the consensus upstairs was that it was Mr. Pearn who had scored.
That final quarter and a half would be seeing as many Hawk players that could get on the field which would keep injuries and a chance for CL’s scout team to enjoy a chance for glory.
Canyon Lake will be facing Calhoun Sandcrab team who will come into this Area battle sporting a, 4-7 record but before you go into a celebration frenzy then realize that this team has a 4 game winning streak and beating Alice, 35-26.
Alice (8-3) other two losses was against Corpus Christi Veterans and Calallen teams that have some proverbial skins on their wall.
The Sandcrabs lost to Calallen by 7 points and Veterans won their Bi-District contest, 70-14 over Medina Valley.
Canyon Lake has their 2nd longest winning streak with 7 and another notch can tie the CL 2017 team for most in Hawk history.
Way to GO HAWKS!!
