Four Teams jockeying for 2 Spots: Games Remaining in order.

Canyon Lake (4-6) Wimberley, Navarro, Open Date
Bandera (5-5) Davenport, Open Date, Boerne
Texans: (4-5) CL Hawks, Billies, Davenport
Billies: (3-6) Boerne, Texans, Navarro

Go Hawks & Beat the Texans!!

Get your slide rule or abacas out…or for the hip audience ask ‘Alexa’ or you can activate your AI for these next questions on who might qualify for those last playoff spots.

Boerne and Davenport has shored up those first two places while your Hawks along with Bandera-Wimberley-Fredericksburg facing a tag-team wrestling bout for a spot.

This is what we do know:

1)  If The Lake can win their next two contests then they would secure the 3rd seed. Control their own spot….

Looking at the schedule above there are several other scenarios.

2) Take into account that Boerne and Davenport have a chance with wins against all 4 teams above.

3) We know games that involve playing Navarro give a  favorable chance for a win.

(CL did win that first round bout with the Panthers but this 2nd round in district has

             Go Hawks Beat the Texans!!

produced nothing, to brag about as a Hawk fan, as they still search for that win. Plus this game is on the road)

The Hawks will need a, take no prisoners mind-set, in that battle and quite frankly for the whole week.

There is a chance in having 2, 3 or 4 teams being tied on February 13th. That would require those teams playing on Thursday-Friday or Saturday to untie this knot. One game for sure….two games if there are 3 or 4 teams tied. This scenario would also involve coin flips.

A four way tie would involve the Billies finishing 2-1 which would leave the Texans with another loss to go along with the Hawks win on Tuesday against our Back-Bone neighbor.

Bandera has the biggest hurdle this week facing both front running schools and those possible losses resulting with another 5-7 district record.

The only way a school can avoid playing an extra game to qualify is by winning both games against that opponent to break that tie. Hence, if CLHS can beat Wimbo then they would secure that spot for 3rd place based on Bandera also losing both of their games.

Confused yet? There will be a lot of  ‘what is happening around the league’  chatter for these next 3 dates.

The Lake and Bandera are the only two schools that have two more contests.

One last thought to take note:

A win by any of the 3 schools over Davenport or Boerne would go a long way for securing a spot for that school.

Wimberley plays Davenport.
Fredericksburg plays Boerne.
Bandera plays both schools.

Make the trip to Wimberley to give your Hawks a boost this coming Tuesday and Let’s Go Hawks!!

Hawks Take Down Navarro, 64-49

                  Way to Go Hawks!!

Canyon Lake completed their first round of District 27-4A games standing in 3rd place one game behind Davenport.

The Hawks took down Navarro last Tuesday night with one of their best shooting nights this season with an overall 44% from the field and a lofty 46% from beyond the arc.

That led to a 5th place tie with 10 other Hawk teams that have reached 11 makes in a game. However, with using their shooting  percentage as a metric to break that tie would put this game only behind CL’s 11 makes in their Boerne game February 2nd, 2013.

There were some other notable milestones with this victory having Carter Williams finishing with a double-double with 11 points and rebounds while also contributing 5 blocks that had Williams’ finishing with 10 blocks for the week. This was his 3rd 5 block party in his career that ranks 4th all-time.

Jacob Holland made 5 three-pointers for 3rd place tied with 9 other Hawks. Holland helped keep CL in control to start this game making 4 of those shots during that first half.

Another notable stat came from Jaxson Jeter when he finished with 8 assists for 5th on that all-time list for Canyon Lake.

                 Way to GO HAWKS!!

This Navarro Panther crew had a 4 point lead to start this game, 9-5 with right under 3 minutes left in that first quarter.

A Hawk rush after scoring 11 unanswered points to end that first stanza was comforting but NHS would still hang on when they cut a Hawk 7 point lead during that 2nd quarter when they took the lead back at the 2:09 mark before halftime.

The Hawks would regain their lead on a Jeter 3 point jumper and the Hawks hung onto a vicarious 2 point lead, 29-27.

Defense allowed The Lake to an 8 point advantage to start out of halftime which has not been a Hawk strength for most of this season, but on this night, did supply this Host team a chance for separation, 39-31.

Go Hawks & Way to Fly High!!

The 4th Period had both teams change from a marathon contest to a sprint as both teams combined scoring 43 points that had CL outscoring Navarro 7 points, 25-18 and an eventual, 64-49 final.

All 4 district games that CLHS has won had the Hawks holding their opponent to 40-49 points. In those two set-backs their opponents scored 59 points with the second round beginning next Tuesday in Fredericksburg.

There is just one more home game against Boerne and having 5 of the 6 games on the road will give CL a good audition, if a post-season ticket can be punched, for a chance to work on focusing and not letting an opponent’s crowd noise nullified.

CANYON LAKE JV & VARSITY SEND WIMBERLEY BACK HOME on SLIME ROAD!!

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity set the stage for the upcoming Varsity tilt on this night with a 4 point (much worse than the final score) win against Wimberley’s JV, 52-48.

It would be a good night at the Hawk Nest when CLJV took care of business after a workmanlike game as these Hawks held an 11 halftime advantage, 25-14.

Defense was the name of this game in those first 3 quarters as that 2nd stanza saw the Hawks dropping droppings (not a misprint) on the Texan’s offense holding them to one field goal.

“The kids played to their potential, and we still have room for improvement,” Head JV Coach Javarius Smith surmised. “I told the kids before the game that we need to be locked in and play our best no matter what our opponent’s jersey says. The battle of the backbone is a big part of Canyon Lake sports history, so the kids have a little more giddy up when we play those guys.”

                             Go Hawks!!

That certainly played out as this turned out to be a team affair with 4 of those Hawk starters finished with double digit scoring and one player just one field goal away from making that fraternity  to 5 inductees.

Ben Parma turned on his offensive skills during that 4th quarter with his 8 points which had half of that total coming as a result of his shot that brought rain from beyond the arc while being fouled for that coveted 4 point play.

Guard Gavin Cano directed the offense with floaters and dishing the ball scoring 10 points.

Eli Hammons (11 points) used his size to control the paint while Josh Rowe and Wyatt Sims each contributed a combined 21 points with pinpoint accuracy.

The Hawks did have a lapse as they went prevent defense to end this battle which will usually allow a team to amass enough points that can make that final score look much closer than what actually happen.

But a win is a win and now Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity will look to build on this conquest as they have one more contest before the 2nd round of district games next Tuesday at the Hawk Nest.

Way to Go JV Hawks!!

Line Score 1 2 3 4 Final
Wimberley JV 12 2 10 24 48
CL Hawks JV 15 10 7 20 52

Reece Pippin 2.

===========================================

The Lake’s Varsity helped their chances of making the post season after coming from behind to beat Wimberley, 47-46. The win was important as the Hawks have just one remaining game during the first round of district battles.

Hit Man says way to get rid of those Pests.

That game will come nest Tuesday against Navarro who is presently tied with Freddie still looking for their first district win.

In this win, The Lake, now stands with a 3-2 record and bragging rights on those two teams right below them in the standings jockeying for position for those coveted 4 post-season spots.

The HoHum – Cold – Microwave Hot Hawks started with a game that had both participants with a turnover prone start. But CL was able to win this first phase, 9-7 and was highlighted when Mario Aguilar scored his first points with an old time 3 point play after being fouled on his jumper and free throw.

During the 2nd quarter both teams still had a hard time finding the bottom of the net but Aguilar’s steal and layup coaxed a 9 point lead, 16-7 with 2:15 still left on the first half clock.

CL’s defense was on fire which is one of those basketball adages that ‘defense can be a constant on the hardwood’. That was the motif during this period until that last 30 seconds when CL left their guard down allowing two quick baskets.

Before those last shots, The Lake had held the Texans without a point for 8:30 minutes.

Now, welcome to CL’s biggest problem (ice cold 3rd period) so far this season, when Wimberley came out of their halftime break on fire and finished this quarter scoring 29 points and enjoying an eight point lead, 40-32.

Put into perspective that these Texans had scored a total of 17 points for 3 quarters but after that 3rd stanza it almost clip these Hawk’s wings.

WHS would continue that barrage starting the final 8 minutes upping their lead to 11 points, 43-32 on a corner 3 pointer with 6:10 left on the timer.

With a back and forth affair and then the Texan’s second 11 point advantage with a 1 minute being drained and The Lake staring at the scoreboard down, 45-34.

So with a ho-hum first half and then an ice-cold 3rd quarter your Hawks finally put together a remarkable microwave hot moment both offensively and defensively for the rest of this period  outscoring their visitors, 11-1 to end this game with a win starting at that 5:10 mark.

Play by Play: CL WT Time
* Dalton Stromquist offensive rebound and fouled 1 point. 35-45 5:11
* Carter Williams (10 rebounds) scored and fouled 3 points. 38-45  4:29
* Aguilar found Jacob Holland for assist & bucket 3 points. 41-45 3:50
* Holland’s offensive rebound and short jumper 2 points.    43-45  2:49
* Stromquist steal leading an Aguilar’s layup 2 points.     45-45  1:05
* Wimberley best foul shooter made one of two 1 point. 45-46 12.2
* Aguilar fouled driving to basket & made FT shots 2points. 47-46 05.9

Canyon Lake ‘Hawk’ Proud!!

That Wimberley player was perfect before that missed free throw. He had made 8 consecutive foul shots and then a miss that left this game in the Hawks hands for a win.

Canyon Lake can now take care of business this Tuesday and finish the first round with a 4-2 record and an inside track for punching a ticket for the post-season. Also remember that CL has just 2 home games remaining with this Navarro Tuesday contest and then Boerne during the 2nd round of district.

Ho-Hum….Ice Cold…. Microwave Hot Hawks like their food hot!! Go Hawks!!

WEEK'S RECAP

                        Go Hawks!!

The Lake Boy’s Basketball team had even-steven results after a 2-2 record in the Fredericksburg Tourney and CL will now be enveloped in moving their focus to their district season starting this Tuesday playing in Davenport.

Canyon Lake has already matched their total with one district win matching last year’s club and will have their sights on adding to that total  this campaign.

When comparing common opponents played this season, The Lake, is holding their own based on those results. One caveat was seeing this season with 3 starters from last season missing a majority of those pre-district battles.

A small sample size of games has CL showing enough improvement for a realization of placing above last place in district with an outside chance of reaching a post-season berth.

District 28-4A has 5 of those 7 teams with a winning record and a glimpse of that if these Hawks would have had those injured players during the beginning of this season….they too…not having totake a lot of, horse shoe throwing, to think thii The Lake team having a winning record too.

                      Let’s GO HAWKS!!

CLHS sandwiched their two tourney wins with two losses against 5A schools.

One loss against Georgetown was a forgettable affair after a 50 point set-back and then seeing CL give Liberty Hill a scare which had the good guys achieving  a 10 point lead early in that contest.

In that first win playing Salado, Canyon Lake, started with a dismal first quarter that had the Eagles working  a 13 point advantage, 20-7 with 30 seconds remaining in that first stanza before CLHS cutting it to an 11 point deficit.

The Lake would put together an 8 point barrage to start the 2nd quarter which helped close that gap leading to a one point halftime, 28-27.

With 3:13 remaining in the third quarter, Canyon Lake would have their first lead, 36-34 when Jacob Holland found Mario Aguilar for a bucket and lead that lasted for the remainder in this 8 point victory.

                             Go Hawks!!

CLHS started the game shooting 31% but after finding their groove ended this contest with a respectable 46% from the floor.

Carter Williams led CL scoring 18 points without a miss from the field as those points came around the basket while leading the Hawks with 3 steals and 10 rebounds.

Mario Aguilar also scored in double digits (12 points) while pulling down 7 rebounds.

Salado cooled off and that had The Lake with an in your face defense during those last three quarters leaving these Eagles scoring 27 points.

This Eagle team beat Davenport in overtime and lost by 5 points to Bandera which gives C-Lake a notion that they can compete in district play.

Canyon Lake’s defense ranks 2nd on the All-Time Points allowed average, 47.1 points per game. The 2012 team is first in this category when they allowed, 46.6 points that year.

                            Go Hawks!!

The Hawks win over Greenwood showed that this team can lose a 9 point lead in that 4th quarter and still have enough still in their tank for a 3 point win.

Games like this, in the past, would certainly be put on the loss ledger.  Canyon Lake’s history is suiting up their deepest bench since the beginning of Hawk basketball back in 2008.

Jacob Holland sank 4 three-pointers in this win and has amassed 49 for the season and now ranks 6th on the All-Time makes list.

Jaxson Jeter (one of those late arrivals) finished high point with 17 points and has given Coach Cole a slasher who can shoot or dish the ball for an assist and Jeter also sank 3 of his 4 from beyond the arc which will come in handy.

Mario Aguilar finished with a double-double with 11 rebounds and points in this win. You can also add 5 assists to his game totals and now stands 9th with 66 for this year with a chance to reach triple digits and join Doug Hubnik (151 2013 season) and Tyler Pauly (118 2021 season) which is pretty good company.

Carter Williams missed CL’s first 11 tip-offs and has now been active in his past 12 games with good results taking the lead in rebounds. On this Greenwood win Williams finished with 11 bounds and 7 assists. But this young man wasn’t finished with in this win after contributing 4 blocks and 3 steals.

A pretty good work day and seeing how Dalton Stromquist and Jeter continue to find their hard-wood legs as they continue to acclimate would help as this season matures.

Canyon Lake’s next home game will come on January 5th against Bandera with tip-off at 6:30pm.

Come and support these young men and Go Hawks!!
