The start of Sub-Varsity Girls Basketball was on full throttle last Tuesday night as these two teams swept the Lehman Lobos at the Hawk Nest.

The ReSporter could only attend one game but seeing some of the JV 1 squad game the Hawk enthusiasts would certainly noticed a difference with the level of play as this Hawk team walloped the Lobos, 48-31.

Head JV 1 Coach Jimmy Chamberlin when asked after the game about this Hawk team said, “We scored points,” with a broad smile seen from ear to ear.

In past campaigns, Canyon Lake has struggled to score 48 points in multiple games added together and this exhibition showed again on how talented this group of Freshman girls have been.

Canyon Lake’s Girls Basketball future looks bright even after a 2 point loss to Lehman in a season opening contest at the Hawk Nest on Tuesday night, 38-36.

Lehman outscored CL by 6 points in the last 4 minutes of play to pull the win on a shot with 2 seconds on the clock.

“We had good effort,” Head Basketball Coach Zach Burleson commented. “This was a good learning experience and after we look at the film we will find what we will need to work on.”

Bracken Christian won their final game of the regular season over Victoria Faith Cougars, qualifying for the playoffs, 59-0.

The Warriors went into their final home and regular season contest needing a win for a chance of playing win or go home games and passed that test with flying colors in this battle.

“I think we’ve made great strives forward,” Head Coach Hosea Hedric stated. “I believe we as a team have learned from each other, so the trust we have grown to have in each other is really cool.”

BCS started this game with a fumble on their first drive as Cristian DeLeion took an end around hand off to the goal line but fumbled on his fall that had Reese, on the spot, Smith there to recover the fumble in the end zone.

Did You Know This?

Canyon Lake’s loss last Friday against Taylor had situations that if you had told the ReSporter would happen, then a win would have been predicted.

Case in point:

There was not one 4th down conversion tried in the game.

The Hawks have made a conscious effort to continue a drive at all costs. This has happened on multiple situations this campaign. In Friday night’s game there were a few times when a 4th down had a result of a punt (2 times) or a field goal (1 time).

Since that did not come about, then it would tell the you that the offense was working well enough that a conversion was not needed.

Canyon Lake will need to use mirrors in their next game with the Taylor Ducks as they once again took a win home after a Hawk 17 point lead during the first half that was decimated in the 2nd quarter and an eventual Duck win, 50-44.

“We knew they would be good,” Head Coach Charley Drum said after the game. “We came out ready to play but it is a new season now.”

CL finished their regular season with 7 wins while finishing 2nd in District 14-4A with a date next week against Liberty Hill.

Hawks Need(ed)ville to Make Mistakes in Loss, 3-0

Canyon Lake lost to a worthy opponent in the 2nd round of their Volleyball Area Game in Smithville succumbing to a Needville sweep, 26-28, 16-25 and 18-25.

“We had a few more weak spots than they did,” Head Coach Kimberley Paisley quipped. “They are ranked for a reason….but overall we had a great and wonderful season.”

This sweep at the hands of the Blue Jays left the Hawks with a 26-13 record and some proud players on a good season.

That first set was worth the price of admission as Canyon Lake was on, while having two set points for a chance of a win that just escaped the Hawk’s grasp.

Canyon Lake will advance to their next round after sweeping the Texans, 3-0 in Johnson City on Tuesday night in Bi-District play.

“We had to get over our mental block in facing Wimberley,” Head Volleyball Coach Kimberley Paisley said. “I just wanted the girls to start finishing like they did in the first set and pushing for points.”
