Hawks Volleyball, Win One and Lose One

Canyon Lake Volleyball (10-7) finishes a three team round robin, 1-1 in La Vernia on Tuesday night.

Head Volleyball Coach Nicole Creek

Their first match was a win over San Antonio McCollum in four games. A second game disappearance was the only flaw.

The Hawks did win the next two games convincingly, 25-16 and 25-19.

Senior Marisa Ellis once again had a triple double leading the team with 14 kills and contributing 14 assists and 11 digs in this battle.

Freshman Halley McKnight lead the assist count with 19 and Sophomore Hayley Melone finished with 24 digs.

The Drum Beat: Q & A with Coach Charley Drum

Coaches Corner will now be known as Drum Beat in honor of Head Coach Charley Drum.

Head Coach Charley Drum

ReSporter: How are you feeling about your first game as Head Coach?

Coach Drum: “It is a nervous energy. it has taken forever for Friday to get here.”

ReSporter: Where is the team right now as the season looms?

Coach Drum: “I think we are further along than where we had been this time last year. Scrimmages can be a good indicator, but sometimes they’re not.

ReSporter: Tell us about this week’s game with Blanco.

Coach Drum: “They always play us tough…Tim Goodman and Colton Childress will be hard to handle in the backfield. Blanco is basically a run base offense. We are looking for football fundamentals in our game this week.”

ReSporter: How do you try to handle the beginning of this season starting with Blanco?

Coach Drum: “They will always throw a few wrinkles into the game. They do a good job of trying to keep our offense off the field with their offense, conversely we want to do the opposite.
Last year we played well for the the first two downs but we would make a mistake to help the team we were playing to keep a drive alive.”

ReSporter: Good luck Coach and we look forward to more insights this season.

 2006 BCS 16 AHC 64
 2007 BCS 54 AHC 48
 2008 BCS 44 AHC 16

This Year's Scores: First Game for both teams.

Bracken Christian will start this year on the road as the Warriors will try to finish this season with one more extra game.

The Warriors are playing a team that has beaten them two times. There are only two teams that have won two games against Bracken since they started play in 2006.

Austin Hill Country did finish last season in fourth place and will have a hard time having a better season.

Why? The Knights lost all six of their starters from last year’s team on offense and only one player returns on their defense.

2011 Flash Back: Canyon Lake Finishes off Blanco, 14-7

The Hawks had a slow start to the season last year and the Blanco game looked like Canyon Lake would be put in that situation again. The main item the past few months in the football write-ups has been the inability of the team to finish.

“Last year we didn’t finish,” Head Coach Matt Monzingo stated. “Tonight we finished, we controlled the game with ball control in the second half.”

Finishing did not happen until the end of the season and now the Hawks have acquired the taste of accomplishment in the second half as CLHS finished the Panthers off.

Here is the tale of the tape between the first and second half. Canyon Lake totaled 108 yards in the first half. Second half? 196

Hawks Win Consolation at Arabian Volleyball Tourney

Canyon Lake did it again by coming through on the opposite bracket in Devine last Thursday and Saturday.

This was a little different from the Wimberley Tournament in that Canyon Lake at least won one game on the first day of action.

The win was also against a District 27 foe from Bandera. The first day did have a much more competitive atmosphere coming from Canyon Lake as all the games were hard fought and there was no contest that was a roll over.

Once again the Hawks ruled the second day with another three game sweep.

Canyon Lake Pre/Game versus Blanco Panthers

History: Blanco series is tied 2-2
 2008 Hawks 00 Panthers 63
 2009 Hawks 21 Panthers 14
 2010 Hawks 07 Panthers 12
 2011 Hawks 14 Panthers 07
 This Year: First Game

This has been a home field advantage series thus far in games played.

The last three games have all been decided by seven points or less and this year could be in that same vein.

Canyon Lake comes off a very disappointing season in that their record (8-2) was the best ever, but there was nothing to show for all the accolades. Two losses in district play kept the Hawks out of the playoffs by five points in the tie breaker rule.

What type of team will come through the Hawk inflatable this year remains to be seen.

There will be several new players not seen running to the sidelines and the loss of Zach Henshaw a player that eclipsed the 2000 rushing total last season. Matt Magness will also be missing as a go to receiver, not to mention key losses on the offensive line.

BCS Football Finishes Final Tune-up in Preparation for Season Opener

The Bracken Warriors continued their final warm up before next Friday’s opening game on the road in Austin.

BCS will start under the lights at Austin Hill Country as they look to finish in the final four and hopefully one game better this season.

Bracken secured wins in both scrimmages leaving the field ready to start the season.

Canyon Lake holds their own in Scrimmage with Lehman

Canyon Lake listens in on Post Game comments from Coaches after Scrimmage with Lehman

The Hawks looked good with all three teams last Friday at Hawk Stadium. The Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity were all in action and came out of the game ready for their five year old birthday party.

In the two 12 minute quarters after the set scrimmage, CL scored twice while holding Lehman scoreless.

“No injuries and we got better this week,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “This week we played a better team and we seemed to be faster on defense.”

Defense is what will have the final say on how this team will finish and holding Lehman scoreless overshadowed all the scoring the Hawks had on this night.

Coaches Corner: Bracken’s Lloyd Fields

Head Coach Lloyd Fields will be starting another year with the last

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

scrimmage before the season starts next week.

Bracken Christian will be traveling to Seguin for a three team scrimmage with Lifegate and San Marcos Home School.

“This scrimmage we will have the starters with more time ready with the first team,” Coach Fields said. “We only have two non-starters on the sidelines that are healthy.”

BCS has already had some players hurt during this part of the season and that will put some pressure on more players while having Coaches spending more time in prayer time hoping that this scrimmage will be considered a success if no one gets hurt.

“This past week we have spent a lot of time on the kicking game,” Coach Fields fielded kicks. “But, we will need to get some work in this Saturday.”

Running Back Eduardo Covarubbias will Tongue Tie Announcers this Year

Running Back Eduardo Covarrubias with Zach Henshaw

Eduardo Covarubbias has been a mouthful through the last two years as Canyon Lake goes on the road and that team’s announcer has the chance to practice a lot of syllables.

The saving grace has been that Covarubbias has not had the amount of carries his counterpart had (Zach Henshaw) during his 4,329 rushing yards the past three years.

Now, Covarubbias will have the chance to show off his skills during his Senior year and quite frankly, there might not be that much difference from what we had seen when Henshaw was running over defenses for the Hawks.

Covarubbias was the feature back the first part of the 2010 season when Henshaw was nursing an injury suffered during the Summer. Covarrubias did quite well during that time slot when he rushed for 417 yards on 71 carries for a 5.9 per carry average during that four game stint.

For his career Covarubbias has totaled, 943 yards on 159 carries for a 5.9 per carry average.
