Head Track Coach Terri Sanders talks BCS Track Season

The ReSporter: “You have some returning and transfer athletes this season, what are your

Head Track Coach Terri Sanders

expectations as the season looms this coming Friday?”

Terri Sanders: “Senior Grady Achilles will be returning to compete for his 100m and 200m state championship titles.  He is also a part of a powerful 4×1 relay consisting of Kevin Knapick, Austin Wilkinson and Connor Simmons.  This should be a great relay team! Austin Wilkinson transferred in and is a powerful runner competing in the 4×1, 4×2, 200m and long jump. Kevin Knapick will once again be competing in 4×1, 4×2, 400m and shot and disc. We have a team of 35 track team members who practice hard and I expect very positive results.”

The ReSporter: “What disadvantages do you have with other programs that actually have a track instead of grass and dirt?”

Terri Sanders: “Our disadvantage in not having a track is especially difficult for our relay teams.  It is hard to practice hand offs on grass and expect it to be the same on a track with cleats.  All our other events we make work without the track and it sometimes proves to our advantage in that as we practice on uneven terrain, it makes running on a track seem so much easier!”

Baseball: CL Salvages last Lockhart Tourney Game, 16-0

The Hawks took care of Austin Eastside Memorial Panthers in short order Saturday morning for their final contest of the Lockhart Tournament.

The game was set when Canyon Lake answered the bell with six runs to open the first inning.

The Panthers were handling the baseballs like they were wearing paws from their mascot, as the eight errors allowed CL to amass 18 base runners for the shortened contest.

Logan Felch made his presence known with two hits and three run batted in, with two of the hits going for doubles. Felch had one double off the wall and was hit with some degree of authority.

Canyon Lake Girls Track Finish Fourth in Blanco Relays

The Canyon Lake Girls Varsity Track started the season with some personal and

team records as the 2012 campaign commenced at Blanco last Thursday.

When asked if she was encouraged by the opening of the season, Head Track Coach Lacey Lambert exclaimed, “Yes…I am. Our girls times are where we need to be. We have a big freshman group and they are going to help us in the relays.”

Another athlete that should help is Marisa Ellis as the Volleyball/Basketball/Track Athlete continues to add to an impressive first year after moving in from Midlothian last Summer.

Ellis placed first in the High Jump with a jump of 5’2” and a Triple Jump of 34’2.5”, which turned out to be a Canyon Lake record, but not a personal best for this Junior.

“I want to beat my best Triple Jump of 36’11.5” and go to the Regional,” Ellis started. “I was rushing between the high jump and triple jump and doing that did not allow me to set my timing for the two events.”

Hawks are off to the Races as Varsity Boys Win Blanco Relays

Canyon Lake started track season on a strong note last Thursday in Blanco.

The Varsity Boys scored 153 points beating second place Comfort by 36 points.

Several athletes had good performances with a few Canyon Lake All-Time Records set.

Jordan Anderson set the bar pretty high as he totaled 50 points for the Hawks winning all five events entered.

Anderson set a new 400 meter run record winning with a 51.89 run. The race was .60 of a second better than Mikk Griffin who graduated last season and is now running for Angelo State University.

Anderson also set a new all time best on the long jump when he bolted for 20’10.75”, he jumped over Eric Nelson’s record by four inches. Anderson’s previous best was 20’1”, giving you an idea of this athlete chances of making some noise this season.

Softball: Hawks Rally Falls Short to Blanco, 7-5

Canyon Lake traveled to Blanco and ran out of gas before reaching the field, losing

Centerfielder Mary Caroline Jordan

Centerfielder Mary Caroline Jordan

to the Panthers, 7-5.

The Hawks finally figured out the Panther’s pitcher, but the four run seventh inning ended with a base running error squelching a chance for the comeback.

“We’re a young and learning team,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “This is on the job training.”

Before the last inning, CL was only able to scratch out three hits while scoring one run. The run came in the fourth inning and brought the game to within one run for a tie.

Boys Basketball Final Coaches Corner with Jeff Maynard

The ReSporter had a chance to get some last thoughts from Head Coach Jeff Maynard

Basketball Coach Jeff Maynard

Basketball Coach Jeff Maynard

on the recent end of season for the 2012 Basketball season.

The ReSporter: “Canyon Lake finished this season by giving up 10 points per game less than any previous season. What did this team do differently than previous clubs to reach that number?”

Coach Maynard: ”I think that this team really bought into our defensive philosophy and once they saw the success they were having—it became fun for them. The other big difference in this team was their desire to play defense. That is something we have been trying to find with our kids and I think we have found it.”

The ReSporter: “The Hawks also finished this campaign with 170 fewer turnovers than the previous record in 2010-11 season. How did this accomplishment factor into this season?”

Coach Maynard: ”We told the boys all year that if they played great defense and took care of the ball, that they would put themselves in a position to be successful. We did a great job all year of staying patient.”

CL Baseball Starts Season with Loss to Marble Falls, 9-5

Canyon Lake started the 2012 campaign on the road, Tuesday against Marble Falls in a

Junior Daniel Camarillo

Junior Daniel Camarillo

hard fought loss, 9-5.

The Hawks are a very young team again this season and look to improve as the younger players get more innings under their belt.

The top of the batting order had an impressive on base percentage of .750 for the game which bodes well for having opportunities to score runs.

Daniel Camarillo carved out three hits while knocking in two runs as he continued his hot steak that started last year.

Travis Walker starts his third campaign for the Hawks with two hits and two RBIs against the Mustangs.

Dale Dehlin will be missed by Canyon Lake and The ReSporter

The ReSporter has learned of the passing of Dale Dehlin this Tuesday and would like to share with the family how much we will miss his countenance, help, and smile.

The ReSporter always could count on Dale to let me know of misspelling and other tidbits that was missed in articles written by this writer.

You could always see Dale at all the Sporting events whether it involved Bryce Dehlin his son or not. He was a staunch supporter of Canyon Lake in every facet that you can imagine.

The ReSporter will miss his company during games from little league through high school. Or, just sitting with him during basketball games.

Dear Dehlin family, know that you are in our Prayers as we share in this loss of your husband and father.

Our heart hurts and ask that if you are in need then you know you can count on us (Canyon Lake community) to be there for you.

God Speed as you remember the awesome gift you have received in a man that you had the pleasure to share your life with.

Don Holmes
