Canyon Lake Girls asserted a much better effort in their second go around with Navarro as foul trouble and turnovers took their toll in a loss to the Panthers, 61-38 in the Hawks gym last Tuesday night.

There were some differences in the two contests.

One was having three players that did not have an opportunity to play in the first game.

The Hawks came out of the gate with a good game plan as they fought hard through the first quarter.

CL was tied with less than two minutes left in the first quarter, but with two starters sitting on the bench with three fouls took its toll as the short handed Hawks could not keep up with the District 26-3A front runner.

Amber Ramsey has been good for double figures in rebounds and points since her return to the lineup earlier this month. Ramsey fell to the whistle and played less than five minutes for the game.

The Canyon Lake Freshmen Boy’s Basketball team defeated Navarro 55-17 to improve to 10-5 on the season.

The Hawks’ defensive effort led the way as the Panthers were only able to score three points through three quarters.

“We talk about defense all the time, and it’s good to see that we came out and executed what we talk about,” Coach Luke Chapman said. “In order for us to be successful we have to play tough, physical defense, and the kids have bought into that.”

The Hawks match up with another district foe as they play at Boerne this Friday.

Canyon Lake was ahead for most of the game until two and a half minutes was left in the fourth quarter. The contest went into slow motion for the next 20 minutes as both teams battled to the wire.

“Hopefully we will learn some lessons,” Head Coach Jeff Maynard said. “There is really not much you can say….”

The undoing for CL was free throws once again, as the Hawks sank just 15 out of 28 tries.

The second quarter was the turning point that allowed the Hawks to distance themselves from Navarro. Canyon Lake outscored their counterparts by eight points in the quarter and maintained that advantage through the rest of the game, beating the Panthers, 51-44.

Three of the players enjoyed double figures scoring, Caleb Kreiger 13, Andrew Riali 12, and Tyler Clark 11.

The three players combined to hit 13 out of 21 shots. That percentage did not disappoint as the rest of the squad pitched in finishing with a 54.0% from the floor.

Coaches Corner: Girls Basketball Mary Beth Gallagher

The Hilltop ReSporter was able to get some words of Wisdom from Canyon Lake’s Girls Head Basketball Coach, Mary Beth Gallagher.

The Hawks have had a surprisingly good season and will now be venturing into their last go round in District 26-3A play.

The ReSporter: Close losses the last two games, what avenue do you take with the team during the off week?

Coach Gallagher: “I think we work on mental toughness and focus drills. We put situations on the clock and run through them, giving then situations like, 30 seconds left on the clock and we are up by one… We are working on focusing more towards the end of practice in hope that we will be sharper next time we are in that situation.”

BCS Girls JV hold AHC to a Field Goal Win, 36-3

The field goal for Austin Hill Country was scored with less than three minutes on the fourth quarter clock while the BCS JV basketball team used a round ball to secure the win, Saturday at Bracken gymnasium.

The Warriors started slow by hitting only two of their 15 shots in the first quarter.

However, the rim got much larger the next three stanzas as BCS shot 60% and put the game away.

Briana Martinez continues to have a hot hand scoring 11 points coming off the bench. Every Warrior player had a steal in the game as Austin Hill Country could not find the basket.

Coaches Corner with CL’s Jeff Maynard

Basketball Coach Jeff Maynard

Basketball Coach Jeff Maynard

The ReSporter: What are you trying to emphasize during the off week for the team?

Coach Maynard: “We are focusing on everything that we are doing right.  Although the outcomes have not gone our way, we had played well.  I think that the boys seem to realize that all of these games could have easily gone in our favor.”

The ReSporter: Does the team need a little help in everything, or a larger dose with a certain part of thelr game?

Coach Maynard: “We are playing well in all areas of the game, with the exception of one–shooting.  We have shot the ball better our last two games, but we still have been struggling at times when we need to make a shot.”

CL (updated) All-Time Boys Basketball Records

The ReSporter has some more stats for Boys Basketball. The team and

individual stats will give you a sense of where this years team stacks up with previous Hawk teams.

Note: Red will indicate former students and previous teams. Green represents this year and current players.

These stats are by no means complete. The ReSporter is missing five games from this season and previous year stats were also missing games.

The 2008-09 team had no stats to be found, therefore the records below might be off a tad. However you will get a jest of accomplishments of past players. The ReSporter only inserted the top five in each category, except when a current player was close enough to break into the block of five players.

Some interesting notes below:
Matt Magness has passed Stuart Lowry as the all time leading scorer.
Chris Green was a three point machine.
Matt Magness is closing in on Christian Pena in made free throws.
Neal Whitehead leads Canyon Lake in three categories, Rebounds, Blocks, and Steals.
We hope you enjoy reading about the students related to the numbers.

Canyon Lake Boys Lose to Billies, 45-35

Canyon Lake took one on the chin from the Billies as Matt Magness returned to the lineup scoring 13 points in another low scoring affair.

The ten point loss was just a three points deficit with three minutes left in the game, as the Hawks had to revert to fouling Fredericksburg to help close the gap.

Magness was not only the high point player (13), but he also led the team with eight rebounds.

There were a couple more surprises, with five three pointers from four different players.

Paul Davis pitched in with two in the first half while Carl Cook and Ancel Morel helped out in the cause keeping the Hawks close with two three pointers in the second stanza.

“The bench did fabulous,” Coach Maynard surmised. “I’m proud of the bench players.”

Of the 35 points scored, the bench players once again contributed 19 points, as Coach Jeff Maynard shuffled the deck and had Morel and Cook coming in after tip off.

“Ancel (Morel) games have been much better when he is coming off the bench,” Coach Maynard closed.

Lady Hawks Lose in Overtime to Billies, 36-33

The bad luck Hawks have a chance to revamp their game as they will take a week off from games with an off date this coming Friday.

However, the game with Fredericksburg just added another anvil around the neck for a team with promise, but just not a enough trinkets to get them over the hump.

To say the game with the Billies was tight would be an understatement. The Hawks and Billies were tied after the first, second and fourth quarters of the game.

If the shooting and free throws were improved just a fraction, this team could be enjoying a great season. Now, Canyon Lake will need to take inventory over this off week to make sure they have their guns loaded for a stretch run that could still move them into the playoffs.
