Softball: Then and Now

softballThe Canyon Lake Softball team has not had a lot of momentum in the past few years. The team is one of the few team sports without a Junior Varsity team, which does not give the athletes the opportunity to play teams in the same age bracket.

The Junior Varsity Football team finished the season undefeated, but few would argue that the team would of been undefeated playing varsity teams this past season. The Hawks have played seven games going into this weeks Tuesday night game at the Hawks diamond. Read the rest here »

Coaches Corner with Head Coach Trent Dunavant

The Canyon Lake Hawks Baseball team has finished the pre/season when they played last Friday night in Burnet.
The Hawks will be learning at a fast pace the next couple of weeks as they prepare for district play.

“We have a lot of young guys that need a lot of game repititions,” Head Coach Dunavant said. “ We are just inexperienced at some positions and it is going to take some time to get up to speed.”

The Hawks raced to a lead in the first inning and held on for one of the more impressive wins in the short history of the program, against San Antonio Roosevelt Rough Riders at the Hawk diamond.

The Rough Riders came into the game with a 4-1 record and also had the important 5A at the end of their name. Roosevelt competes with the largest high school classification and the Hawks introduced them to a lower Grade 3A. Read the rest here »

Introduction: Where Sports is a Passion not a Job

The remains of The Hilltop Reporter are not gone yet. The Drs. Found a pulse and now we will be operating as a Sports Page only.

Why? Look at the papers around the area and you will see the Canyon Lake Hawks don’t get a lot (if any) coverage. In fact, since the Hilltop Reporter started three years ago the team and school got more coverage than they had previously.

Competition will do that sometimes. This is where the phrase above got its emphasis.

Going to sporting events and being in the Press box with other writers covering the Hawks, I found that the writers were more concerned with their date for the weekend than the actual game they were watching. Read the rest here »

A Look Back!!!

The Canyon Lake Hawks baseball team, were the first to go past the first round of the playoffs last season.

We thought it would be nice to warm the fans up with the article coming from the Hilltop Reporter Sports Archives. The three game series did not end like the team wanted, but the opponent knew that they were lucky to advance past the Hawks.

Canyon Lake’s Baseball Odyssey

Take me out to the Ball Game

The Canyon Lake Baseball team is getting ready to pitch-off their season next Tuesday night against Marble Falls.

Before that happens the team has played two scrimmages and are in the process of finding which players they can go into battle with.

One thing is certain. The Hawks will be a young team.

“We are playing a lot of Sophomores,” Coach Trent Dunavant said. “We had the second base, center field, catcher, pitcher, and right field as sophomores at some time in the game tonight.” Read the rest here »

Hawk Freshman team loses, 21-18

By Don Holmes

The Canyon Lake freshman team could not hold onto the lead, as the Boerne freshmen took the lead and game with less than two minutes at Hawk Stadium last Thursday night.

Colin Baker was the highlight film on this Thursday evening, as the running back finished with 123 yards receiving and 103 yards rushing.

“Without the receivers blocking for me, I would not have been successful on the long pass play,” Colin Baker said. “It was a hit and run and I ran my butt off. It is what it is.”

Conner Ricker hands the ball off to Colin Baker during the Boerne game.

The 226 total offensive yards also included two touchdowns receiving. The one reception has to be a record for the freshmen, as Baker caught the pass from Conner Ricker and scored with no time left on the clock for intermission.

“I saw the outside blitz and the safety come up,” quarterback Ricker said.

Ryan Pliler was also a recipient of a 38-yard pass-and-run that helped the Hawks to the 18-7 lead.

Canyon Lake could not keep up the intensity, as the Greyhounds rebounded and scored the last 14 points while holding the Hawks scoreless in the second half.

“We did not play with emotion for the second half,” Head Freshman Coach Brian Owens said. “We did not sustain the rest of the game.”

“We need to focus more,” a confident Ricker finished. “I know we will do better next week.”
