Final Season Stats for CL’s Varsity Basketball
Wednesday, February 24th, 2016CL Hawks Have Down 2nd Quarter in Loss to Taylor, 73-43
Wednesday, February 24th, 2016The Basketball Season for Canyon Lake turned over their previous years by making the playoffs for the first time in their history, but it was those turnovers of a different nature that caused the downfall as the Hawks lost their battle with the Ducks, 73-43, on Tuesday night in Cedar Creek.
CL had been averaging just 16 turnovers per game these past few weeks but the butterflies won on this night as the Hawks finished with 23 against a team that was very athletic.
Those passes against Yoakum became a hazard in playing Taylor as these players had the quickness and the ability to close those passing lanes and turn that Hawk pass into an overage of points in this win.
Canyon Lake had those turnovers lead to 26 points and what turned out to be a 30 point loss.
The good news? Canyon Lake started 3 Juniors while the Ducks had 4 Seniors start this contest.

Softball Finish Navarro Tourney 3-3 after Win over Copperas Cove, 10-2
Saturday, February 20th, 2016Canyon Lake rebounded with a 10-2 win over Copperas Cove as the Hawks ended their Huber Ranch Tourney 3-3 for the three day event.
“We hit very well,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We ran the bases and used our speed to our advantage.”
CL jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings which during normal circumstances would have led to warm fuzzies, however after enjoying similar leads in the past 3 days, Canyon Lake had to find a way to finish which happened when Sophomore pitcher Lauren Mentzer allowed the Bulldogs no more than 5 hits without walking a batter.
Alexis Robinson continued her hot bat with 2 triples in the win that knocked in 3 Hawks while, Junior Kat Weber got into an exclusive Sorority with a home run over the right center field fence.

Softball: Hawks Hang on in Win over Luling, 6-5
Friday, February 19th, 2016Canyon Lake finished their 2nd day at the Huber Ranch Softball Tournament and for the second day in a row finished with one win and one loss as the Hawks held off the Luling Eagles, 6-5 for the win.
This game would give Hawk fans a reason to think this year might be different as Maggie Banks came into the game to relieve Starter Alexis Robinson and as Banks pitched 2.1 innings giving up no runs for the win.
Robinson had the hot bat with 2 doubles and driving in 2 runs but it was a Robinson run off the bat of Kat Weber that had the final run and win for Canyon Lake.
“This week I had been struggling at the plate,” Robinson started. “I knew I needed to focus on my at bats and it finally worked.”
Coaches Corner with Basketball’s Lucas Chapman
Thursday, February 18th, 2016The ReSporter: Congrats once again on reaching a milestone that is well deserved.
The ReSporter: What can you tell us about the Taylor Ducks?
Coach Chapman: “They are big and athletic and can really get up and down the court. They shoot the ball well from deep and can really attack and rebound the ball. They are certainly going to be a tough opponent, but someone that I think we can certainly play with if we do the things we want to do.”
The ReSporter: I noticed from your last few games that certain players are sharing more of the load in rebounds, etc. Is that by design or just what happens in the flow of the game?
Coach Chapman: “That just happens in the flow of the game. Sometimes the ball bounces differently, so to speak, so rebounding can be fickle sometimes. I do like that we are having more guys get rebounds, especially the guards.”
The ReSporter: What are 2 or 3 things you will need to shore up in order to put this team in a place to pull off an upset?
Coach Chapman: “We need to keep them out of the paint and off of the glass on the defensive end of the floor. If we can do that we have a great shot. We also need to slow them down and make sure they don’t get a bunch of transition and run-out layups. That’s where they really hurt you.” (more…)
CL Hawks Get Momentum in Win over Yoakum, 60-35
Wednesday, February 17th, 2016Canyon Lake has now made it official as they walloped Yoakum by 25 points in their win to leave no doubt that they deserve their first playoff game in the history of CL Hawks Basketball.
“I am very pleased with how we played,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman started. “We did exactly what we needed to do and built some momentum going into the playoffs.”
A lot of things went right in this game with the Bulldogs as they won each quarter by adding to the lead throughout the contest.
“We started off slow, but really picked it up and play with much better energy the rest of the game,” Coach Chapman assessed.
Gerit Wilkins finished the game with 7 assists as his command of the offense continues to impress as the game gets into a win or go home time of year.
Jacob Ramirez has been working on getting his offense back into his game since he was absent from the team as district play had started and now finds himself back in the groove.
