Jordan Anderson signs with Angelo State University for Track

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Katie Williams and Jordan Anderson have had a stellar careers at Canyon Lake

Jordan Anderson signing for a chance to run at Angelo State with Family looking on.

High School these past four years and now embark on their next quest as both of these students have signed on for playing their sports in College.

“Jordan Anderson is one of the most decorated track athletes we have ever had at Canyon Lake,” Athletic Director Drum said while introducing Anderson to a crowd before his signature would send him to Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas.

Anderson has the best CL times in the 100, 200, 400 Meter Dash while also holding the Hawk’s best Long Jump and High Jump marks.

Last season, the Hawks, many times could count on 50 points when entered into track meets at many venues.

“We forced him to run track in middle school,” Robin Anderson said when asked what she remembered about her son’s start in track. “Coach Chapman started him out with track and he now absolutely loves it now.”

Sometimes your Mom and Dad really, ‘Do’, know best.

“When you make an arrow, you need to make everything about it so it will go straight,” Shad Anderson (Jordan’s Dad) said eloquently. “When you shoot it, then it will go straight to God.”

Jordan will certainly give you a nonchalant feeling as he strolls to his track event, you don’t know how this student might cause you to give him all your attention as he blazes around the track.

Katie Williams Signs for One College will play Two Sports

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Katie Williams and Jordan Anderson have had stellar careers at Canyon Lake High

Katie Williams signing on with Dallas Christian College with Ray and Karen Williams looking on.

School these past four years and now embark on their next quest as both of these students have signed on for playing their sports in College.

Katie Williams will be going to Dallas Christian College (DCC) and will be playing two sports when she reports the end of the Summer to her new home.

Williams was seen at a Volleyball event earlier this year when DCC noticed and started to show interest.

A few weeks later, conversation morphed to Basketball and soon Williams would be asked to help the Crusaders in Basketball also.

Not very many athletes have the opportunity to play in two sports when reaching the next plateau in education, but Williams will have that opportunity.

“I’m excited but kind of nervous,” 2 Sport Williams started. “Their Coaches were so nice and I had tryouts in early March and I liked the small school atmosphere.”

Track & Field: Hawks Get Two to State Meet

Sunday, April 28th, 2013

Canyon Lake will have two representatives for the Track & Field State Meet, May 10-11 in Austin after two

Jordan Anderson Jumping High

CL athletes decided to Jump over to Austin in a couple of weeks.

Marisa Ellis and Jordan Anderson will both be making their second visit after placing in last year’s meet, albeit in different events.

Both Ellis and Anderson participated last season in the Triple Jump and 400 Meter Dash respectfully and now have come together to compete again in the High Jump.

In the Region Track Meet in Kingsville over the week-end Ellis had a rough hour as she competed in her two qualifying events at the same time.

That seems to not be a very fair way of coming up with the best athletes as Ellis was going from one venue to another as other girls were waiting for Ellis to High or Triple Jump.

So, as other students were able to focus and concentrate on one event, you had Ellis going back and forth to hope and compete at her best.

Nightmare Loss to Navarro, 15-1

Saturday, April 27th, 2013

Travis Walker in game with El Paso Parkland earlier this year.

By the time their Moms got to their CL sons the nightmare was over and all the Hawks had to show for this game was a relieved look on their face as this season came to a close.

The Hawks carried this game to that last inning when a year of troubles finally released all that bad karma and Navarro had taken a close game and turned into a nightmarish 13 run inning and a final score of, 15-1.

How about two grand slams in that seventh inning and a batting order that batted around two times.

 Tale of the 7th Inning
 Hit Batters: 2
 Singles: 5
 Doubles: 3
 Home Runs: 2
 Walks: 3

What will make you shake your head is that CL had controlled this game and had a chance in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead when the Hawks loaded the bases with no outs.

That nightmare started with that inning as Canyon Lake had one out on a squeeze play that went awry. Another potential score that was thrown out at the plate after another single.

Navarro took that defensive momentum and went crazy from the plate as Travis Walker finally ran out of gas and what fuel that was still in the tank blew up from a spark off the bats of the Navarro Panthers looking to clinch a spot for the playoffs.

That was certainly accomplished with those 13 runs and now Fredericksburg will go home without a spot in the post season as they needed a Navarro loss for a chance to play on.

Walker had another good pitching game save that last inning as he kept those Panthers guessing with his ‘eefus’ or Big Cheese pitch for much of the evening.

Track: Marisa Ellis Will be Jumping on her way to Kingsville

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Senior High Jumper Maris Ellis

Hawks Region Track qualifiers will take center stage on Friday as they will show off their skills against fellow athletes from 8 Districts from Region IV.

Marisa Ellis will be another Hawk that will be entered in two events and will be trying to make her second trip to Austin with a first or second finish.

Ellis was in Austin last year where she finished 6th Place for Canyon Lake in the Triple Jump.

This year and how the competition looks, Ellis might have a better chance of going to the State Meet via the High Jump.

Ellis had a 5’5 jump in a meet that was not deemed official earlier this year and a jump like that on Friday would certainly give her a decent chance of advancing as their seems to be a log jam with several of the students having a 5’4 inch standard.

Six of the eight districts in Region IV have qualifiers with that same 5’4 inch mark.

This will be an event where a girl that scratches at any height especially the lower marks might be on the outside looking in since so many of the ladies are so close in abilities.

Strategy might be the best avenue as each jumper could wait out the lower heights in enter the jumps later giving that athlete a better chance. Of course, that could also hurt since working your way up the ladder might be their best bet to advance.

Hawks Shut-Out Navarro, 3-0 Behind Ryan Hutcheson’s Pitching

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

Outfielder Cody Powell

Canyon Lake became Fredericksburg’s best friend as the Hawks knocked off Navarro with the pitching of a Ryan Hutcheson, five hit shut out, 3-0.

Fredericksburg needs Navarro to lose to give them a chance to finish third in district play and be awarded a spot in the post-season.

CL pulled out a masterful 80 pitch outing from Hutcheson as he evened his record at 4 and also threw strikes and giving only one Panther a free ride to first.

“Hutcheson was able to get all three pitches over for strikes, his fastball, curveball and knuckle ball,” Senior Catcher Brady said. “He kept the Panther hitters off balance for the whole game.”

Hutcheson’s battery mate also helped the teams cause by raising his batting average to .411 for the season with a double, run, and rbi.

Cody Powell also scored two of the runs while Corey Shedrock contributed a double for Canyon Lake.

Softball: Coaches Corner with John Gallagher

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

The ReSporter:You stated last season about how your team would need to improve their

Head Coach John Gallagher

offensive skills…was that part of your game a success? And what will be your major goals as you look into next season?

Coach Gallagher: “I thought we hit better as a team this season .280 compared to .212 last season. We had one player (Beseda) over 400 and three over 300 where as last year we had only one over 300. We scored 156 runs compared to 127 in 2012 so I’m happy with our production this season. We also added more speed to the lineup and that will help us next season. Our major goals next year will be (1) to fill three infield and one outfield positions that were vacated by our seniors. Defensive continuity will be key to building a strong unit. (2) to improve our overall knowledge of the game. (3) get more consistentcy from our offensive short game-bunt, slap, base-running etc. (4) build on the confidence gained from this season and  take it to the next level. (5) be more dominate on the mound by limiting walks. (6) Find a way to finish. We had several games with one bad inning. Without those we win a few more games.”

Kaelin Simmons is Ready to Wow! in Region Track Meet

Wednesday, April 24th, 2013

Senior Discus/Shot Put thrower Kaelin Simmons will be on her way to Region this Week-end as

Senior Kaelin Simmons cheering on the Softball Team.

she will be searching for that one throw that might propel her to another Meet called State.

Last year, Simmons made Region Meet in the Shot Put and decided to make it two events this season when she had one of those special throws in District 27-3A Meet in the Discus.

Simmons throw wowed her and Coach Hooper when they measured it at over 110 feet.

Why? Simmons best throw was a good 18 feet less than that total for her tries throughout track season.

Simmons had her best Discus throw in last year’s district meet when she heaved that heavy frisbee for a distance of 89’9.

District Meets agree with this young lady as she went into this years Meet with a shot-put throw of 32’2 and Discus best of 93’5 feet.

She hit 34′ even in the Shot for second place and then her 111’0 Discus throw giving her a first place.
