Canyon Lake JV Football Grounds La Vernia, Wins 13-6

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Story by Coach Lucas Chapman

The Junior Varsity Hawks survived a late charge by the La Vernia Bears Thursday night in La Vernia to win 13-6. The victory moved the Hawks to 3-0 on the season.

After a 0-0 game at the half, Sophomore Skyler Tschoepe put the Hawks on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run on a quarterback sneak with Jared Bruckman adding the PAT. In the fourth quarter, Tschoepe was at it again, connecting on a 5 yard touchdown strike to Wide Receiver Shane Relkin. The score put the Hawks up 13-0 late in the game.

Down two scorea, La Vernia went to the air and scored on a 20 yard pass with just over 30 seconds to play, Tommy Clark stripped the ball after a short completion, and Cody Powell recovered the fumble to seal the victory.

The Canyon Lake defense was stifling all night long, forcing the Bears to go to the air after stuffing the run for most of the game. When the Bears dropped back to pass, the secondary stepped up with several pass break ups and sure tackling in the open field.

The Hawks return home this week to play the Burnet Bulldogs.

CL Hawks lose by a Claw, 14-13 to La Vernia Bears

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Canyon Lake lost by a claw, 14-13 to La Vernia Bears last Friday night at Hawk stadium. A blocked extra point was the difference in this game as the special teams did play a better game, however the blocked extra point would end up haunting this Hawk team for another week.

The Hawks defense bottled up the Bears with only 251 total yards but could not capitalize when they needed too in order to ice La Vernia.

This defense had another solid effort overall and now have a three game stint of holding opponents under 300 yards of total offense.

The three game average is 255 yards and only 143 yards via the ground. Canyon Lake gave up 251 yards to the Bears and that included a 93 yard drive at the end of regulation.

“We played a heck of a game and our defense did a lot better,” Senior Trevor Duty deduced. “We did our hardest and I put all I could in that last drive. We were prepared…we just let off the pedal too much.”

That stat will tell you this team might be able to make some noise as CL tries to get their offense in sync and balance out each aspect of what a winning program can put together.

CL Freshman Run Down by Bears, 26-0

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Canyon Lake was run down by La Vernia Bears as the Freshman team took it on the chin to the tune of 26-0, last night at a soggy Hawk field.

La Vernia’s running game was stepping it off against Canyon Lake as the first half yards were all the result of rushing plays.

The refs were also stepping it off against Canyon Lake, as they amassed 10 penalties for 55 yards. This was not referees blowing calls, it was a freshman team that was not concentrating on snap counts.

Stat line for the game was the total yardage for the first half:
 Canyon Lake 49 total yards
 CL Flags 55 total yards

Canyon Lake was still in the game as they were driving for a touchdown as the first half was coming to an end, as on the last play a pass to the end zone was intercepted and returned 95 yards for a Bears touchdown.

Football: CL Coaches Drum Beat

Thursday, September 13th, 2012

The ReSporter had a good time talking to Head Coach Charley Drum this week, we hope

Coach Charley Drum

you enjoy finding out more about your Hawks.

The ReSporter: Two weeks in a row, the special teams have had some trying times, what have you done to try to rectify this part of their game?

Coach Drum: “We are getting the kids situated and they were Junior Varsity players last year and so we are trying to get them where they need to be. We are going to change up some players in the games. This is easier said than done sometimes.”

The ReSporter: Quarterback Branson Belcher had the most yards rushing by a quarterback in the history of Canyon Lake last week.

Coach Drum: “That was one positive from last week. We are trying to get Branson to buy into this to be in his game. Two weeks ago in the Blanco game, he could of made plays with his feet and it cost us in some of the plays. He has never been asked to make plays with his feet.”

Football: Coaches Corner with Bracken’s Lloyd Fields

Thursday, September 13th, 2012

The ReSporter caught up with Head Coach Lloyd Fields during his open week for a state of the

Head Coach Lloyd Fields

Bracken Christian Warriors.

The ReSporter: Coach, what was your goal this week after just two weeks of play with this team?

Coach Fields: “When I saw that we would have an open date this early in the season this Summer, I had no idea of how much this would be a good thing. If we would of had to played, then we would of had a hard time playing this week. This bye week could not of come at a better time.”

The ReSporter: What are you trying to accomplish with the players this week?

Coach Fields: “We are trying to get in better condition and we are going to polish up some things and try to get better. We put our game plan for Brenham in yesterday.”

Pre Game: La Vernia vs. Canyon Lake

Monday, September 10th, 2012
La Vernia @ Canyon Lake 7:30pm
                            0-2 1-1
History: Bears and Hawks are tied two games a piece.
 2006 Hawks 08 Bears 42
 2007 Hawks 07 Bears 21
 2008 Hawks 24 Bears 19
 2009 Hawks 34 Bears 23
This Seasons Games:
Hawks 26 Blanco 21 La Vernia 13 Medina Valley 40
Hawks 35 Somerset 54 La Vernia 40 Port Lavaca Cal 56

La Vernia will be CL’s next opponent and they will be bringing a very sore defense to the game this week.

This should be a quick game based on how the rush defense for La Vernia was abused by Port Lavaca Calhoun last week.

How about 642 yards of offense by the run. The Sandcrabs had three players with over 100 yards rushing. One of their players had 338 yards on just 23 carries.

Before you get too overconfident, realize that Port Lavaca is a 4A school and that can make stats look very one sided, for a smaller classification.

Canyon Lake won the stat battle last week but that still resulted in a loss on this season’s ledger sheet.

Bracken Christian Cuts Paper Lions, 66-20

Saturday, September 8th, 2012

Bracken Christian put the Lions in their den without teeth as the Warriors ran rough shod over Sugar

Senior Defensive End Jeremy Fasenmyer

Land Logos Prep last Friday night, 66-20.

Several items you can take from this game.

Bracken has a good running and passing game and when both are in sync, then the opponent can only play cards in their den while the arcade scoring goes on TV.

BCS rolled up 561 total yards which ranked only behind an Austin Hill Country game last year that went the full four quarters. This game was ruled a mercy game with over four minutes still left in the game.

Senior Eli Achilles also amassed 486 total yards via, rushing, passing, and returning interceptions. Achilles 277 yards on the ground ranks eighth behind Grady Achilles who is owner of those games.

Sugar Land Logos Prep was driving during the second quarter only behind 14 points. Their drive had started on the 29 yard line and a nine play drive had the visitors on Bracken’s one yard line.

Enter Achilles who had his second interception of this game and raced a record 79 yards for a 22 point lead.
