Canyon Lake took the Badgers to the cleaners in their Thursday night win, 42-34. As there were many flags flying on this night with both squads totaling 20 penalties which added up to 200 yards.

Lampasas won this penalty battle after finishing with 115 yards of step offs with personal foul infractions out the wazoo.

The Hawks controlled the line of scrimmage which helped with long drives and the special teams were special in this win, stopping a 2 game skid as CL prepares for a 6A team in Austin next Thursday.

“The special teams won this game by giving CL that extra possession,” Head Coach Charlie Drum started. “The offensive line came out and helped control this game and that helped us control the clock and score in the red zone.”

La Vernia would win CL’s district as the Bears have now won against all of the teams but Hondo.

In the Canyon Lake game, ‘The Bears’, eked out a win in that first match, 25-22 and then unleashed every Bee from every Hive on the Hawks in the last two sets, 6-25 and 9-25 ending up with all the honey.

In that first match, the Hawks, were ahead through most of the set and enjoyed a 5 point lead at, 14-9. Then the Bears hugged CL for the remainder of the night, not allowing any breathing for the home team.

Bracken Christian is Ready for another Win

Bracken Christian kept a Giddings State School at arms length in their win, 36-32 on Friday night.

The Indians will have a team that could be different every game based on what type of week those young man might have experienced on those previous days leading up to game time.

In other words many of those players will miss a game or two during their 2016 schedule that are not always injury related.

Canyon Lake varsity volleyball headed across The Backbone once again to face the Wimberley Texans, Friday night, that sent the Texans packing for new territory.

In the first match the Lady Hawks stormed the court quickly dispatching the score to a 10-4 lead. Alysha Perez came into the game and immediately spiked her way to bring the score to 11-5. The Texans only had one player with the kind of height usually seen in Wimberley, but she was quickly shut down by Hawk blockers, Anna Bettersworth and Paige Bower.

Canyon Lake came up short in their loss to Wimberley as the Texans’ Defense shut down the Hawk’s Slot-T in this victory, 31-21.

“We just had too many mistakes and we practiced Wimberley’s running that screen all week,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “The last two weeks we stepped up our competition and they made more big plays than we did.”

On what this short week will mean for the team, “We are going to find out but this is why we scheduled this way.”

JV Hawks Get Demolished in Loss to Wimberley, 34-0

Go Hawks

                Go Hawks

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity last their first game of the season when Wimberley showed up at the Hawk Nest and demolished the home team, 34-0.

The Hawks started their first possession with 2 running plays for a first and then the faucet was turned off with a vengeance as CL would not celebrate another first down until 8 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter.

That drive would be the best the Hawks would offer for this evening as they had 9 plays and stalling on Wimberley’s 37 yard line.

Wimberley would score on their first 2 possessions in the second half as they raced (literally) out to a 28-0 lead. The Texans shortest scoring play was 10 yards as they accumulated 246 yards on those 5 scoring jaunts.

Canyon Lake did show life once in the 4th quarter when Landry Moore snagged a pass and was just short being tackled on the Texan’s 4 yard line.

With a 1st and goal at the 4 yard line the Hawks would show once again that this game would not have any good come from it.

                       Go Hawks

Wimberley took over that drive and on their 3rd play had a 75 yard dash by Hunter Bonugli and a game that needed a running clock.

The Hawks will be back in action next Wednesday and than might be the answer to see if Canyon Lake might be able to play better on a different day.

A forgettable day and a short memory will be the only way to recoup from this loss.

Go Hawks!!

JV Hawk Consistency Takes Down Akins Eagles

Adia Garcia takes control of the net in win over Akins

Adia Garcia takes control of the net in win over Akins

By Karen Russell Holmes

Akins Eagles flew into the Hawks lair last night only to find the smaller raptor ready for the kill. Calm, cool and collected, the junior varsity volleyball team swept the Eagles in two matches for the game.

In match one, consistency and methodology kept the Lady Hawks in the lead the entire round. The Eagles could only come within three points of them. Nothing Akins did could ruffle the Hawks feathers. Raegan Cowan, Audrey Schultz and Eden Farley were money at the net. Nothing dropped to the court with Mariah Haight running the show as labero in the back court with the digging help of Tyler Hollums and Tilly Giammalva. Canyon Lake won with a solid 25-19 score.

Canyon Lake Freshman continue a season filled with wins as they continued their Gold Consolation Tournament victory in the Tex-Fest last weekend to a win over 6A Austin Akins, 25-5 and 25-14.

In that first set, Cassidy Felps had 4 aces as the Hawks zoomed out for a 11-1 lead that would only get worse for the Akins Eagles.

On that first serve, CL, also was helped by two kills from Caroline Kullberg and one kill by a hit from Taylor Fillinger.

CL’s Hawks Beat Akin’s Eagles, 25-16, 25-13, 25-18

Canyon Lake Hawks were stronger than the Akins Eagles as the Home Team won for the first time this year in the Nest.

CL last played at home on August 6th and finally returned home for a game and on this night a win beating the Eagles, 25-16, 25-13, and 25-18.

The win improves Canyon Lake’s record to 18-9 and 5-4 against 6A schools this year.
Akins came out of the chute playing a good set as each team could not get more than a 1 point lead until Regan Mickey started the second rotation with a Hawk, 10-9 lead. The Hawks would score on every service but one for the rest of this set to get the separation needed for a 9 point victory.

Canyon Lake went for their halftime break and returned as a different team as the Hawks could only generate 108 yards after intermission compared to their 224 yards in that first half.

Giddings also went into halftime and came out a different team as their defense controlled the line of scrimmage while they scored twice in the 4th quarter for the 13 point victory, 34-21.

“They (Giddings) taught us a lesson and that is why we scheduled a team like this,” Head Coach Charlie Drum said. “We made more mistakes in the second half and they just came out in the second half and whipped us….we just did not match them in that 2nd half.”

On what Canyon Lake will need to do as the Battle of the Backbone Game comes calling next week in Wimberley.

“We have to clean up mistakes,” Coach Drum said succinctly.
