Canyon Lake Hawk Volleyball took on Blanco Friday night in a surprising 4-1 match win against the Panthers.

Coach Paisley said it was a frustrating game and that her girls were playing Blanco’s game.

“We lacked the intensity that we have been playing with,” Coach said.

In the second game the Hawks started out on top, but it quickly became a point-for-point game. Faith Hasness’s spikes were money and kept the Hawks from falling behind. Regan Mickey was also top scoring playing a smart game at the net by placing tips in Blanco’s open court.

Canyon Lake took the lightning delay and bottled it up for a run-a-way win over the Blanco Panthers, 40-7 on Friday night.

The game was tied, 7-7, when the clouds closed in and started a lightning show but the Hawks outdid that display with both their offense and defense in grand fashion.

That lightning show would get that proverbial monkey off Canyon Lake, who have been carrying a 3 year losing streak with Blanco that is now history.

“We refocused after the game delay,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “That was the key as we executed when we came back out and I thought we were the better team.”

Canyon Lake Freshman started their high school career much like they ended those middle school years as the Hawks finished off St. Anthony in grand fashion, 30-6.

The Hawks were able to get 10 players into the offense running the ball and that was done in grand fashion to the tune of over 11 yards per play.

That number did increase after a Cody Daily 71 yard run for the final score as the Yellow Jackets did not have the depth to keep up with the Hawks in this track meet.

Daily only needed 8 more yards to have 100 for the game and his 92 yards was accomplished by carrying the rock two times.

Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity started their season with a hard fought win over Blanco this past Thursday night at the Hawk Nest.

The 6 point win can be attributed to the Hawk defense as this group of players literally shut the Panthers down in the 2nd half allowing the 6 point lead to be good enough for this win.

Blanco had just 23 total yards in the second half with just one first down and Canyon Lake was able to get that last score in the 4th quarter.

“Coach Hooper challenged them to be better tacklers in the second half,” Head JV Coach Greene said to the point. “They (Blanco) are real good at what they do.”

This game started with CLJV drawing first blood when they drove 70 yards on their very first drive after an 8 yard pass from Jacob Neel to Connor Rose on 3rd down.

The Freshman crew lost their first game of the year against Clemens but have continued to win ever since, with great passing skills that has helped supply the Hawks Varsity as this season has continued.

CL Freshman won, 25-12, 24-26, and 25-22 as the last two sets only had a team go up to 6 points before Poth would pull back into the fray of competition.

“The fans got their money’s worth,” Head Freshman Coach Tosha Ridgeway said with a relieved look. “We try not to look and pay attention to the score because they know that no lead is comfortable.”

The Hawks flew into Poth and feasted on the Pirates, as the Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity all flew out with wins.

Canyon Lake’s Varsity jumped out quickly on Poth in their first set by scoring 13 points off of serves with the Hawks first four servers.

Senior Regan Mickey and Faith Hasness had an opportunity of serving 5 times while Hanna White crossed the serving line for 3 points.

Those rallies allowed CL to increase their lead to 10 points, 19-9 and cruise to a final score of 25-17.

Only 2 service errors and a total of 5 unforced turnovers was the key to this fast start.

The Varsity carried that momentum into their next set with another convincing, 25-18 victory in much the same fashion.

The Hawks started Saturday with a decent and competitive loss to 6A SA Madison losing 1-2.

Then a turnaround game with East Bernard with no time to rest and the Brahmas took advantage with a 2 set sweep.

That last set was a scorcher as the Hawks only mustered mayonnaise with 5 total points making for a sloppy sandwich and an upset stomach.

“Let’s just say we had a heart to heart discussion,” Head Coach Kim Paisley said eloquently. “We had some tactics for Tivy and it did great and we were fired up to play them (Kerrville).

With rain all week long, the Hawks took the field on Thursday afternoon and found sunshine and a great afternoon for football.

Canyon Lake also closed their exhibition season with La Vernia as the overall picture was positive with the Hawks doing well in several areas with the Sub-Varsity squads while the Hawk Varsity played a great set of plays in this contest.

“I think we came out better as we stepped up our competition while learning a valuable lesson on not putting them away,” Head Coach Charlie Drum started.

After having several plays of scrimmage the two teams had two 12 minute running clock to close the final part of the affair.
