Canyon Lake rebounded with a 10-2 win over Copperas Cove as the Hawks ended their Huber Ranch Tourney 3-3 for the three day event.

“We hit very well,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We ran the bases and used our speed to our advantage.”

CL jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings which during normal circumstances would have led to warm fuzzies, however after enjoying similar leads in the past 3 days, Canyon Lake had to find a way to finish which happened when Sophomore pitcher Lauren Mentzer allowed the Bulldogs no more than 5 hits without walking a batter.

Alexis Robinson continued her hot bat with 2 triples in the win that knocked in 3 Hawks while, Junior Kat Weber got into an exclusive Sorority with a home run over the right center field fence.

Canyon Lake finished their 2nd day at the Huber Ranch Softball Tournament and for the second day in a row finished with one win and one loss as the Hawks held off the Luling Eagles, 6-5 for the win.

This game would give Hawk fans a reason to think this year might be different as Maggie Banks came into the game to relieve Starter Alexis Robinson and as Banks pitched 2.1 innings giving up no runs for the win.

Robinson had the hot bat with 2 doubles and driving in 2 runs but it was a Robinson run off the bat of Kat Weber that had the final run and win for Canyon Lake.

“This week I had been struggling at the plate,” Robinson started. “I knew I needed to focus on my at bats and it finally worked.”

CL Hawks Get Momentum in Win over Yoakum, 60-35

Canyon Lake has now made it official as they walloped Yoakum by 25 points in their win to leave no doubt that they deserve their first playoff game in the history of CL Hawks Basketball.

“I am very pleased with how we played,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman started. “We did exactly what we needed to do and built some momentum going into the playoffs.”

A lot of things went right in this game with the Bulldogs as they won each quarter by adding to the lead throughout the contest.

“We started off slow, but really picked it up and play with much better energy the rest of the game,” Coach Chapman assessed.

Gerit Wilkins finished the game with 7 assists as his command of the offense continues to impress as the game gets into a win or go home time of year.

Jacob Ramirez has been working on getting his offense back into his game since he was absent from the team as district play had started and now finds himself back in the groove.

Lady Hawks Soccer Take Down the Bears, 2-0

Go Hawks

                                       Go Hawks

Canyon Lake Girls Soccer won their last non-district game over La Vernia, 2-0 at the Hawk Nest on Tuesday night.

A good win as the last few games have had this team finding it hard to get a win as last Saturday, a loss to Liberty Hill and then a string of games that ended in tied scores.

“We played hard and tough,” Head Coach Ryan Tierney said. “I have been extremely proud of our defense lately as they stayed on marks and lock down offensive players and it makes it hard to get shots on goal.”

The Hawks made up for a 1 all tie in their last tilt against the Bears almost a month ago.

CL now will start their tough district slate this Friday on the road at Boerne.

Canyon Lake Boy’s Soccer is on a Roll after their win over Burnet on Friday night, 4-2.

This is now a 5 game winning streak which matches the most wins in a season except for the present campaign as CL now resides with a 7-4 record.

Mike Thorpe had a hat trick with 3 goals on the night which gave him 13 goals for this year and has more points for this year than his previous two campaigns.

“He’s (Thorpe) been our captain for 3 years now and he is our team leader,” Head Coach Warren Graham admonished. “Obviously he is very important for us offensively and players will try to key on him…but the key for us will be feed and dish.”

Hawks Charged For Playing in Own Gym, Texans Win, 58-49

Canyon Lake had their moments in a loss to Wimberley but those moments were fleeting as CL fell short, 58-49.

“They were on the boards and being physical and that limited our chances,” Coach Brian Hooper said as he filled in for an ill Coach Chapman. “We did a good job of breaking their press and we did some good things.”

Hawk fans have heard it before, but the free throw line was their downfall as the Texans took advantage with sharpshooting while the misses would be rebounded by the team in red for another chance of scoring.

Which Wimberley did on 6 different occasions for more points. Add those missed opportunities up and it would more points than this 9 point loss.

Oh yeah, that same free throw line for CL turned into 40% shooting or another six point left on the hardwood.

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016

Canyon Lake Girls Soccer won a tied game when they came from 3 goals down to knot the score as time expired on Tuesday night against Burnet, 3-3.

Burnet jumped out to a 3 goal lead and had CL on their heels until an awakening happened allowing this comeback.

“The girls played aggressive last night and the first half was rough for us offensively,” Head Coach Ryan Tierney said. “We had opportunities but could not put the ball in the net.”

Coach Tierney was commenting on that first half where the Hawks found themselves digging a hole that would be hard to escape from.

“The girls dug deep and made a decision as a unit to fight,” Coach Tierney got excited. “Rachel Bennet sent a the ball to Meredith Ellery who then scored off her left foot and Captain Chloe Cullen fired a shot into the back of the net inside the 18 yard box bringing the score to 2-3.”

Senior Brandon Ward scored 21 points in game with Cuero

Canyon Lake did what needed to be done to realize their chance for a playoff game by flying away from the Cuero Gobblers on Tuesday night, 61-34.

Brandon Ward was the hot player on this night as he finished with 21 points and making 4 shots from beyond the arc.

The Hawks also had surprise points from Gerrit Wilkins and Sam Langford as these two players combined for 20 point to offset the scoring woes from Rory Preiss and Will Gray.

Canyon Lake is averaging right at 10 points a game from Ward, Preiss, and Gray for district play and having those two players combine with 7 points meant other players would need to step up.

The Lady Hawks won a close one over Cuero to stay on the inside track for a chance at playing more games.

“Last night was another example of finding a way to win despite not having our outside shooting on par and also struggling to get to the line,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher recounted. “We feel blessed to have walked away with that win, it was a dog fight.”

Canyon Lake won just one quarter, as the Lady Hawks outscored the Gobblers by 6 points in the 3rd quarter which held up for a win.

Alexa Ramos continues her strong play as she pumped in 13 points with 2 goals coming beyond the 3 point line.

“Alexa (Ramos) and Mia (Riali) were in foul trouble again and that killed us,” Coach Gallagher said. “Ramos is our energy and heartbeat as well as Mia, so we struggled at times to keep the tempo up.”

Ramos continues her climb on the All-Time lists as she is now behind just two players in steals, needing just 8 more to pass Katie Williams who finished her career with 139.
