With a 16-13 lead, Faith Hasness service was able to expand the lead to, 21-14 with two kills from Addison Farley, a block with Emma Gray, and a Hasness ace along with good passing.

CL Hawks have a 4 game winning streak after taking all three games opening Friday at Wimberley’s Tex-Fest Tournament.

Canyon Lake did not lose a game on Friday as they won both games in a 3 game series against Ingram, Hardin, and St. Andrew schools.

The duo of Addison Farley and Bailey Drum were instrumental in the onslaught as Farley finished the day with 20 kills while Drum accumulated 17.

The Hawks used several different lineups as the first week of games had Head Coach Kim Paisley moving the players around as a master in a chess match.

“We are just giving opportunities and trying to see what works with the girls in different spots,” Coach Paisley said. “It is still early and we are just in our fist week of games.”

Canyon Lake Volleyball starts season with a win over Liberty Hill after losing their first match to Clemens.

The Hawks rebounded quickly in their games with Liberty Hill as they jumped out to a 14-9 lead and increased it to a 7 point win.

In the second game, CL took advantage of Panther’s unforced errors for an easy 12 point victory and momentum going into their best of 5 third game.

The 3rd game had LH with a 14-12 lead, but the Hawks outscored the Panthers 13-6 to close out that final game.

Canyon Lake had close games with Clemens, but just could not mount any rallies to help put one of their first two games away.

“It was good we played them close,” Head Coach Kim Paisley started. “We had to work for every point and they (Clemens) came out to play with enthusiasm and they were just outdoing us at the net.”

The first two games could have gone either way as the Hawks fought back in that first game to take their first lead, 22-21 as CL was behind as much as 5 points during this contest.

CL started with the lead, 10-6, in the second game but it was short lived as Clemens answered that Hawk rally and lead throughout that second game after they wrestled away the Hawks lead.

Clemens and Canyon Lake was a nip and tuck match, as the lead never got more than 2 points as each team battled to the finish line.

The Hawks are loaded, with their largest class of Seniors in a while, as this group of players has been instrumental in bringing Canyon Lake back to the playoffs with their 2nd place district finish last season.

The ReSporter had a chance to catch this group of seniors after their win over Liberty Hill.

The ReSporter: You have had a lot of success throughout the years, how do you plan of making this year work?

Bailey Drum: “We are very close and Emma (Gray) will fit in great!”

The ReSporter: Drum was talking about newcomer Senior Emma Gray playing as the middle blocker.

Hannah Wunderlich: “We have all grown physically and mentally with our skills and now we are ready to go more rounds in the playoffs as well having a better record than last year.”

The ReSporter: What is it like to be here for your first year as a Senior?

Emma Gray: “It is hard to get the chemistry but this has not been that bad….I love the middle blocker and that is my favorite position.”

The ReSporter: It is a good fit when one of the main positions lost from last year’s group of seniors was losing Lillie Sander the middle blocker and now you get to fill that role right off the bat.

Alexis Robinson: “That was what we needed, Emma (Gray) will fill in nicely for us.”

The Resporter: What has Coach Paisley done to help you have the right mental strategy for your games?

Addison Farley: “She does not like to lose and that helps us to want to win and do better than last year’s team.”

Bailey Drum: “It started last year and it is how she teaches us to take each game.”

The ReSporter: Good luck girls and The ReSporter looks forward to following you this season! Go Hawks!!

Mountain Valley Baseball team had a different ending to their game on Thursday against Canyon than the previous week in their loss to Smithson Valley Middle School.

First, the Hawks won, but more than that was how these two games played out.

Last week, MVMS had an incredible comeback in their last inning, only to lose the game in the first extra inning after the comeback by two runs.

This game, the Hawks not only forged back like their previous week, but on this night took things further and had a two for one in regards to coming back.

“One of those games that gives our team some experience as they want to win and they never quit,” Head Coach Raymond Amaro said. “In our very first game with Canyon we came back and we had to focus in practice and when we had bad things happen we needed to be positive.”

Canyon came without the Lake this week in their loss to the Mountain Valley Hawks, 10-4.

The Hawks started shaky as Canyon scored 3 runs in the first giving MV a wake-up call after winning their first game to start the season over this same team.

Grace Hinze was in the circle and Canyon started with the first four out of five batters reaching base. Giving up only 3 runs was a good omen as the start could easily been worse.

“My Coach always tells me to relax,” Hinze started. “Honestly in the first inning I was jittery and nervous because this was a big team and we were going for district.”

Hinze was all business like for the rest of this game as the Cougars only scored one more run in the last inning when this game was well in control.

Mountain Valley Baseball team made things interesting as their rally just fell short in extra innings losing to Smithson Valley Middle School, 10-8.

This comeback would not have been possible if reliever Cody Daily had not made an appearance in the fourth inning to stop the bleeding.

“Throw strikes and just try to bring my team up and win,” Daily said while answering what his thinking was as he took the mound for those middle innings. “We just are going to get a winning attitude.”

SVMS had forged into a, 7-2 lead as the Rangers had scored in all but one inning as they could start coasting going into those middle innings.

The Hawks decided they had better start a comeback and that was what happened as MVMS had two outs when the improbable started.

The Mountain Valley Hawks lost their first game this year when Smithson Valley MS took a 3 run first inning lead and never looked back, Thursday night at the Hawk Field, 12-5.

MV did rally to get within one run when Bailey Bryan and Grace Hinze both reached base in the third inning and came around to score to pull within striking range, 3-2.

“We were not as focused,” Bryan said. “We just need to keep everything in front of us and keep in the game. If we play smarter and know what we have to do on the bases then we can be more aggressive.”

Bryan is one of the few Hawks that is playing as an 8th Grader and will soon be playing on the field as a high school player this time next year.

“I am excited for high school and I played with some of those players last year,” Bryan closed.

Hawks Strike-Out Apaches in Win, 5-1

Canyon Lake pulled off a season ending victory over Gonzales last Friday night as Cody Powell struck out 14 Apaches in the win, 5-1.

In a 7 inning game you need to record 21 outs as a visiting team to record a victory and when your southpaw pitcher is on, then 14 strikeouts will also be a pitchers best defense in the victory.

Those strikeouts equates to 2 out of 3 outs per inning and the Hawks rode that train for their second win over Gonzales this season.

Nick Kissell led the Hawks with 2 hits and also had a walk for a decent on base percentage.

Colton Avey doubled for the only extra base hit as their were several Hawks playing in their last game for Canyon Lake.

Canyon Lake finished their last home game with a loss to Yoakum last Friday night as errors kept the game out of reach for the home squad, 9-2.

The score might not look close, but up until that final inning, Canyon Lake was still within striking range of pulling off a win, with a 4-2 deficit.

Baseball can be tough sport as Yoakum capitalized with timely hits, while the Hawks could score only one run after having 3 consecutive singles to start the 5th inning with just one run being scored.

The Hawks ran out of steam in that last inning giving up 5 runs and too many runs to get back into the game.

CLJV Split with Gonzales to finish Year

CL Banner

Hawks JV split their games with Gonzales, Monday night after a razor thin loss in the night cap, 3-2.

Runs galore in the first game (CLJV 14 Gonz 7) turned to finding runs anyway you could in the night cap and Gonzales finding one more run in the win.

Canyon Lake did use four pitchers in the night game as Coach Brandon Durst was quick with the trigger once a Hawk Pitcher found it rough going.

Avery Montgomery was, johnny on the spot, as his stint on the mound helped keep the game close when he entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the 3rd inning.

“I was hoping I could throw strikes and I got my confidence up and then started throwing as hard as I could,” Montgomery said with precision. “When I start a game I find it harder to fall into a rhythm than when I close a game.”
