Hawks Win final Basketball Game over Yoakum, 70-52

Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

The Hawks started their last game of this season with an all out senior line up and then an all out sophomore, Rory Preiss blitz in their win over Yoakum, 70-52.

With three minutes gone in the first quarter, CL was down 7 points with a very sloppy start as a Yoakum press was doing enough damage that Preiss finally jumped started the Hawks with a 9 point run within a one minute span.

Preiss scored 6 points in that minute and had an assist to Brandon Ward from beyond the arc to help bring the game back from what could have been the abyss.

That energy coming from Preiss also helped in reaching a double-double in the first half of play as Preiss ended with 15 points and 10 rebounds before the end of that second quarter.

“We started off too loose and sloppy,” Head Coach Luke Chapman said. “We had great energy from Rory, right when we needed it.”

Offensive rebounds galore helped CL with one of their best shooting games this season at 48% with a team best 29 field goals.

“Once we got into the offensive side of the court, Yoakum did not have a defensive answer,” Coach Chapman shot. “After getting better at breaking their press we had an opportunity with our transition game especially in that second half.”

The Hawks also finished with three turnovers in the second half compared to a press related 14 in the first half.

Canyon Lake’s Softball team played their last scrimmage game last night in a win over Fredericksburg, 3-2.

“We’re progressing,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “I saw a lot of good things tonight.”

Short and to the point as this team still has some confidence issues in the field and plate but the trek to having a more competitive team is much shorter than in year’s past.

The Hawks had just two Seniors on last year’s team and again this time around there will be just two Seniors to contribute on another young CL team sport.

“I am hoping for a successful season,” Senior Kelsey Ahrens led off. “A good year for us would be consistency and going forward and not taking a step back.”

On how just two seniors can motivate a team that is made up many more younger players? “We just have to keep talking to our teammates and know there will be times we will need to be mentally tough and need to step it up.”

Canyon Lake started last season with a strong pre-district record but when district play begin the Hawks just could not get a complete game.

Lady Hawks Lose in Last Minute while the Boys also take a Loss

Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks made their game very interesting as they closed a 13 point La Vernia lead and tied it up with just one minute left in the game.

Senior Kyndall Drum finishes her last game with 21 points as the Hawks just missed a chance for a win.

Senior Kyndall Drum finishes her last game with 21 points as the Hawks just missed a chance for a win.

Senior Kyndall Drum was the main instrumental piece that forged the comeback.

“I was angry,” Drum beat. “I did not want to end the season the way the game was going and so I just wanted to help as much as I could.”

Help she did as Drum was the tallest person on the floor for most of this game and La Vernia did not have an answer for her inside play as the Hawks finally started feeding Drum the ball and a comeback was started.

The Hawks started their play inside while La Vernia’s three point shooting accuracy fell in that second half.

Drum finished the year with another double-double as she also snatched 10 rebounds to finish her career as a Hawk.

A few mistakes in that final minute of play sealed Canyon Lake’s loss, but this young team did make a good run for that final playoff spot.

Freshman and Sophomores have played an important roll for this year’s edition and with another year of maturity, this team can certainly become a force in the seasons to come.

Improvements with handling the ball as well as passing will certainly lower the turnover problem that plagued this team.

Two years ago, Kyndall Drum had a horrid free throw percentage and she worked on that part of her game and shot over 50% for her senior year.

Little things can become bigger for this team as a bigger finish next year will hopefully result in playoffs for Canyon Lake.

Thanks for your year and The ReSporter can hardly wait for next year’s edition.

============================================

Canyon Lake played their game with La Vernia much better than their last game, but the end result still was a loss to this very tall Bear’s team.

Junior Brandon Ward gets hot scoring 18 points in game with La Vernia

The Hawks had a better percentage of shooting from beyond the arc which helped CL in keeping this game closer than expected.

Junior Brandon Ward was on fire for this game as he finished with 18 points as his shots came from outside, while driving to the basket, and free throw line.

“I knew I was going to have my shot in warming up,” Ward said. “When I made my first three pointer then that just helped my confidence and allowed me to play at a higher level.”

Senior Garrett Winters was the other Hawk to finish in double figures scoring 10 point in the loss where Winters (70) also climbed up the 3 point shooting ladder by only trailing Andrew Riali (122) and Cole Green (77).

Canyon Lake did get into foul trouble as Ward and Skyler Tschoepe both sat on the pine as La Vernia went on a 13 point run starting in the first quarter and well into the second.

That cold spell helped La Vernia’s lead to grow into a game that would become a catch up affair for the rest of this game to the much taller Bear.

Canyon Lake will now have one more game this season with Yoakum next Tuesday at the Hawk Nest as this year’s edition will bow out with a chance to get three wins in district play.

Senior Goalie Buddy Glass made 6 saves while Junior Mike Thorpe scored the Hawks goal with Grayson Rohrbacher getting that assist.

Canyon Lake has started district play with a 0-1-1 first week as this was also the Hawks first tie for the season.

The Hawks will be at home this Tuesday when they welcome Fredericksburg to the Hawk Nest.

The Billies come into this game tied with Boerne as both of those teams have yet to lose.

This game will be another good game and with a Hawk win, CL would stake a hold on one of those coveted playoff spots.

Lady Hawks Lose to the Texans but Still have Playoff Hopes

Lady Hawks will go to last game of season with one more shot in making the Playoffs

Lady Hawks will go to last game of season with one more shot in making the Playoffs

Canyon Lake played a Texan team that has been on a roll these past few weeks as Wimberley upped their winning streak to 8 games after taking care of the Hawks, 61-40 in Friday action.

The Hawks still have a chance to control their own destiny with a victory this coming Tuesday when CL takes on La Vernia and with a win can forge a tie with that same Bear team.

If a win is accomplished then those same to schools will play again for that fourth and final playoff spot.

In this game, Senior Kyndall Drum reached the double-double plateau as she scored 12 points while finishing with 13 rebounds.

Foul trouble was one of the contributing factors for CL as three players were disqualified from action after reaching their fifth foul.

Canyon Lake’s Boys team needed to sweep their last four games to remain with a chance of continuing their season but with some key injuries and a depleted bench, the Hawks were left with an empty bag in their loss to Wimberley on the road Friday night, 72-37.

Canyon Lake has now been officially eliminated from the district play-off race.

The Hawks finished this game playing with four players against five and that usually says all you need to know on how this game transpired.

Brandon Ward was the only Hawk to finish with double digit scoring finishing with 10 points.

Boys Soccer Can’t Keep lead in Loss to Boerne, 3-1

Thursday, February 5th, 2015

Canyon Lake’s Soccer teams started their district play last Tuesday and found that a Greyhound is fast in dribbling a soccer ball, in their loss to Boerne.

Junior Mike Thorpe scored his 10th Goal of the season in loss to Boerne

The Hawk Boys team did put a minor scare in Boerne as they scored their first goal when Mike Thorpe was near the goal for a put back with about 11 minutes left on the first half clock.

“We came out fresh and ready to play,” Thorpe scored first. “We were countering their attack and they could not hit the target.”

That goal for Thorpe was his 10th for this season which has to be a big change for this Junior that was on a team that scored just three goals for the season during his Freshman campaign and six goals last year.

Now Thorpe has scored more goals than the Hawk team had in his first two years of competition.

Boys and Girls Basketball Teams searching for Keys to Success

Thursday, February 5th, 2015

Hawk Basketball has become a hard game to finish this year as the Lady Hawks will need to sweep their last two opponents if Cuero does not lose in their last two contests. If the Hawks can take care of business with La Vernia next Tuesday, then that too would keep the playoff door open for Canyon Lake.

Cuero has the two bottom teams in the standings and their could be an upset but CL will also need to take care of business in Wimberley to give them a chance to tie Cuero and have a play in game.

For the Hawk Boy’s team, a sweep would be the best way of describing their way of playing into the post season.

That will be a tough order since many of the remaining teams are on the higher echelon of the district standings at this writing.

The Lady Hawks had a lead for much of their game with Cuero but just ran into a dry spell that continued long enough to seal the deal for their loss.

Kyndall Drum was a human vacuum cleaner on the glass as this young lady finished with a double-double scoring 13 points and pulling down 17 rebounds in the game.

That rebound total was right at a half of the total rebounds for Canyon Lake and Drum scored one third of the points.

CL Hawks Lose Two in Navarro

Canyon Lake had a tough night in Navarro on Friday night as both Girls and Boys could not get a much needed win against the Panthers.

The girls game had a return of that nemesis called turnovers, as the Lady Hawks committed 31of those dastardly happenings.

Navarro is the front runner in the District 26-4A race and beating this club was going to be a big hurdle to clear for this young Hawk club.

With this loss, CL is perched in the fourth and final spot in making the playoffs as Cuero, (Canyon Lake’s next opponent) suffered a loss to La Vernia and which are two teams the Hawks still have on their schedule.
