Hawks Sweep Gonzales with Varsity and JV Victories

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

Canyon Lake solved their starting slow mantra when they accumulated 23 points in the first quarter against Gonzales and coasted to their final non-district win, 52-39 last Tuesday night at the Hawk Gym.

“We finally came out from the start at home and made a statement,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “I feel a lot better now than I did two weeks ago and we have come a long way…we are ready to play.”

Hawk Freshman Boys Teepee Gonzales Apaches, 52-39

 Gonzales 2 2 13 8 25
 Canyon Lake 16 7 11 11 45

The Hawk Freshmen basketball team came out fast this week as they were able to jump on the Apaches early.

It was a slow start for both teams until the Hawks applied pressure a few minutes into the game.

A few steals and quick passes later the Hawks were up for good in the game.

A 23-4 Halftime lead and hot shooting for the Apaches made this one a little more interesting than it seemed in the second half. The Apaches were able to rally to within 9 points until the Hawks applied pressure again.

“We put in a new press this week that is more of a risk reward press, tonight it just happened to be rewarded as they were only able to break it once.” Coach Barthels stated. “We had Wilkins get banged up a little on the first possession of the game, but Preiss stepped in and did a great job at the point guard tonight.”

The Hawks will need everyone to step up this week as Canyon Lake begins district play against a very tough district from here on out.

“All of the freshmen groups this year are tough in district.” Coach Barthels finished. “We are going to have to play our best basketball and be aggressive if we are going to beat the district teams this year.”

The Hawks lost their first game, 61-44 to Port Aransas and then finished with a hard fought loss to Llano, 56-46 in the night cap.

CL had a problem getting out of the gate in both affairs after accounting for only 7 points in each game.

However the second quarter was a team that played with rhythm as in each case the Hawks held their own or was able to chip away at the deficit.

Andrew Riali took top honors again in being the Hawk’s best scorer with a 14 and 11 point games.

Hawks Have Lid on Basket in Loss to Billies for Varsity and JV

Friday, January 3rd, 2014

The Hawks started District 27-3A on Friday night with a rude awakening as Fredericksburg put a lid on the Hawks basket winning, 44-20.

There was good news and bad news as this game finished the first quarter.

Good News? Canyon Lake shot 100% from the field.

Bad News? The Hawks shot had 2 shots and 11 turnovers which gives you a hint why only two shots were recorded.

Canyon Lake with all of their bad vibes for this game found themselves down, 17-11 with five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

“We had a good defensive effort,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher exclaimed. “It took us a while but we finally ran a good fast break off of their press.”

Sophomore Sarah Schneider came off the bench and finished with 6 points to lead the Hawks.

Amber Ramsey also had a good stat line with 2 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocked shots, while pulling down 9 rebounds.

Points were hard to come by as Canyon Lake turned the ball over 29 times which would be 29 times the Hawks did not have a chance to score.

The Hawks will now go on the road for a game with Bandera on Tuesday in what will be an early must win for this young club.

Another game where the Hawks found themselves down, 28-21 going into the fourth quarter and then had a hard time getting points to carry the game out to the finish.

One point in the quarter on a Keirsten Jones free throw would be the only point for Canyon Lake which would be way too little to keep the game competitive.

“We need to keep running our plays correctly,” Jones said. “Talking on the court will let us know what is going on.”

Canyon Lake had not been pressed that many times this season and Fredericksburg was running the press non-stop in this game. Hence the 31 turnovers.

“Just recently we have been getting pressed more,” Jones pressed an answer. “We need to do a better job of setting up our offense as fast as possible.”

On what she hopes this Hawk team can improve upon, Jones offered, “We all hope to make our shots and work on breaking the press especially in District.”

Sydney Johnson did finish the game with 9 points and was high point for Canyon Lake.

Canyon Lake will travel to Bandera next Tuesday and will see if their game is improving.

Skyler Tschoepe and Andrew Riali were the recipients as the rest of the Hawks followed suit and finished off their counterparts.

Tschoepe finished the day with 28 points and 18 rebounds for the two games and seems to be getting his basketball legs as this season matures into district play.

“I worked hard in practice,” Tschoepe said. “We worked on fast break drills but football and basketball is night and day difference on the type of shape you need to be in.”

Tschoepe was strong around the rim and scored most of his points inside the paint.

“I need to be strong with the ball underneath,” Tschoepe closed. “We need to play and get better on how we played today and play fast.”

Andrew Riali finished his two game stint with double/doubles with points and rebounds.

Riali’s two game totals were impressive with 21 points and 20 rebounds.

Close But No Cigar, Hawks Lose 3 close Games to Lampasas

Saturday, December 21st, 2013

FRESHMAN

Canyon Lake had a rough night losing close games with Lampasas as the Hawk Freshman team had a one point loss to the Badgers.

“We played hard and kept ourselves in the game,” Head Freshman Coach John Barthels said. “A late turnover with just a few seconds on the clock sealed the deal.”

The Hawks seem to have a disease that is creeping onto each squad this year as first quarter jitters are allowing opponents to seize a lead and CL having to come back to get back into the game.

Canyon Lake had to overcome a five point hill to start the fourth quarter and just could not climb another hill for a win.

Canyon Lake Slow Start is Too Much to Overcome in Loss to La Vernia

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

Canyon Lake could not get out of the gate in their game with La Vernia and ended up on the wrong side of the ledger, 75-54 last Tuesday night.

The Hawks are still searching for some pieces to their puzzle that will help put together some good results.

“We just have to find something to hang our hat on and right now we are searching,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “The good news is we have six practices and only one game coming up and that will help us refine some things and work on stuff.”

CL did have Andrew Riali with 20 points that might have this sharp shooter coming out of his slump. All the baskets by Riali were from three-point land.

Canyon Lake had some players out with sickness and that did not help in getting a good game rhythm.

“We played hard as always,” Coach Chapman closed. “We still need to improve our decision making and ball skills.”

The Hawks will be back in action this Friday for an early Tip-Off (5:00pm) at Canyon Lake against Lampasas.

Freshman Hawks Start Slow in Loss to La Vernia, 43-33

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

The Canyon Lake Freshman started their game with La Vernia Bears like they were the team in hibernation as the Hawks first and second quarter was a sleepy 11total points.

La Vernia capitalized on those two periods and held on for a 43-33 win.

Canyon Lake finally did awake with a 14 point third quarter which also allowed the Hawks close their 14 point halftime deficit to a five point barn burner.

“If we can put together four periods of basketball like we played in the third quarter tonight, then we are going to be competitive in all of our games,” Head Freshman Coach John Barthels stated. “The kids did a great job of staying positive both on and off the court.”

Hawks Close CL Classic with Two Losses

Sunday, December 15th, 2013

Canyon Lake finished the Hawk Classic on a down note on Saturday with two losses against Randolph and Liberty Hill.

The Hawks need games to get used to each players nuances and with time hoping that ingredient will jell in time before district play commences.

“We have a long way to go,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We still have a goal of working hard and to peak in January. There is still some stuff that we need to add.”

Canyon Lake is still on a first name basis among the players.

“We did a lot in those last two games,” Chapman closed. “We have played more games than practices.”

That statement gives a fan an idea of what is being shown in games now being improved upon as this season matures.
