Canyon Lake Slow Start is Too Much to Overcome in Loss to La Vernia

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

Canyon Lake could not get out of the gate in their game with La Vernia and ended up on the wrong side of the ledger, 75-54 last Tuesday night.

The Hawks are still searching for some pieces to their puzzle that will help put together some good results.

“We just have to find something to hang our hat on and right now we are searching,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “The good news is we have six practices and only one game coming up and that will help us refine some things and work on stuff.”

CL did have Andrew Riali with 20 points that might have this sharp shooter coming out of his slump. All the baskets by Riali were from three-point land.

Canyon Lake had some players out with sickness and that did not help in getting a good game rhythm.

“We played hard as always,” Coach Chapman closed. “We still need to improve our decision making and ball skills.”

The Hawks will be back in action this Friday for an early Tip-Off (5:00pm) at Canyon Lake against Lampasas.

Freshman Hawks Start Slow in Loss to La Vernia, 43-33

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

The Canyon Lake Freshman started their game with La Vernia Bears like they were the team in hibernation as the Hawks first and second quarter was a sleepy 11total points.

La Vernia capitalized on those two periods and held on for a 43-33 win.

Canyon Lake finally did awake with a 14 point third quarter which also allowed the Hawks close their 14 point halftime deficit to a five point barn burner.

“If we can put together four periods of basketball like we played in the third quarter tonight, then we are going to be competitive in all of our games,” Head Freshman Coach John Barthels stated. “The kids did a great job of staying positive both on and off the court.”

Hawks Close CL Classic with Two Losses

Sunday, December 15th, 2013

Canyon Lake finished the Hawk Classic on a down note on Saturday with two losses against Randolph and Liberty Hill.

The Hawks need games to get used to each players nuances and with time hoping that ingredient will jell in time before district play commences.

“We have a long way to go,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “We still have a goal of working hard and to peak in January. There is still some stuff that we need to add.”

Canyon Lake is still on a first name basis among the players.

“We did a lot in those last two games,” Chapman closed. “We have played more games than practices.”

That statement gives a fan an idea of what is being shown in games now being improved upon as this season matures.

Both games were slow starters in the first quarter, as the Hawks could only muster 5 points in each affair and in both instances were having to play catch up to finish on top.

These two games were must wins over schools that are smaller classifications and in the case of Lago Vista a team that had been on the losing side of that ledger earlier this season to the Hawks.

The Vikings jumped out to a double digit lead with 9 and 10 point runs that ended when CL had their two baskets in a row with 7 minutes left in the second quarter.

Canyon Lake finished that second quarter outscoring Lago Vista 18-7 as both teams retreated to their dressing rooms for halftime.

The Hawks continued their pace in the second half taking a lead on a bucket from Amber Ramsey with 6 minutes left in the quarter and what would be Lago Vista’s last lead in this contest.

Hawks Start Hot and Cold in Marion Tournament

Friday, December 6th, 2013

Canyon Lake finally broke into the win column in their win over San Antonio Stacey, 67-64 in the Marion Tournament on Friday.

The Hawks were clicking by pouring in 49 points in the first half and leading by 24 points, 49-25.

In the second half, Stacey had their way winning that part of the game, 39-18.

The hot and cold Hawks continue to work on that formula that will be able to garner more wins and of course points in the process.

In the recent past, CL has had a hard time scoring points and getting into the 60 or more points arena will help in getting more chances for pulling out wins.

Lady Hawks Lose First Game this Season to John Paul II, 35-32

Thursday, December 5th, 2013

The Lady Hawks could not overcome their six point deficit in the first quarter and were beaten in their first game of this year at the hands of John Paul II, 35-32.

Canyon Lake did close the gap to three points going into the fourth quarter but could not reach the top of the canyon losing by that same margin.

“We played out of sync,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher started. “John Paul was aggressive and we did not come with our A game and so they capitalized on that.”

The Hawks continue to give too many points away with turnovers and missed free throws as the offense gave the ball back to John Paul 24 times while missing 10 shots from the charity stripe.

CL Hawks Can’t Finish in Loss to Lockhart, 62-45

Hawk Freshman Take it on the Chin in loss to Lockhart, 63-30

Canyon Lake could not find the bottom of the rim in their loss to Lockhart last Tuesday night at the Mountain Valley Middle School.

“What a difference this game was after we scored 66 points in our game with Llano,” Head Freshman Coach John Bartthels said. “Turnovers played a major role in our loss, we had a spark in the fourth quarter but we started to late in playing like a team.”

The Hawks were led in scoring by Wilkins as he scored 10 points in the loss.

Canyon Lake was put on life support until the fourth quarter when the EMS finally found a pulse as the Hawks scored 13 points to help get to 30 for the final score.

Come support the Freshman in their next contest as they plan on rebounding on the hardwood.

=========================================================

Canyon Lake Varsity scratched and clawed their way back to a one point deficit going into the 4th quarter and then the trap door was sprung and Lockhart unleashed a 27 point barrage and buried the Hawks 62-45 last Tuesday night at Mountain Valley Middle School.

The Hawks were ahead 5-3 with 4:00 minutes left the the first quarter and that would be their last lead in this affair.

The Lockhart Lions led for the remainder of this game but did have a scare when CL closed to within one point when Garrett Winters drained a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the 3rd.

During the fourth quarter, the Lions started the stanza with a 17-1 spurt that took less than four minutes to attain.

Now Canyon Lake will need to learn how to play four quarters.

“We are still trying to figure stuff out,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman stated. “We did play better this week and we have 13 players that can play and contribute.”

As Coach Chapman continues to try different potions for his pre District experiment in making this Hawk team into a competitive unit entering district play in a month.

“Our ultimate goal is to get better,” Coach Chapman said. “We are getting better and we need to get things together especially defensively.”

There was some bright spots for the team as several players have only been to four practices after competing in the football arena recently.

Guard Garrett Winters did shine as he handled and shot the ball with a lot of confidence since playing on JV last year.

“I feel like I have grown up a lot,” Winters said. I feel like I’m rebounding and taking care of the ball and this still just our second game, but I feel we will get better and better.”

Canyon Lake will continue to get some unity with the team as they play in the Marion Tournament this weekend.

Canyon Lake scored 15 points in their first quarter with only needing one more point to

score more than Luling would have in their whole game.

In fact, the Lady Hawks did score more than Luling in each quarter after that first stanza and coasted to a 53 point win.

“We were able to work on a lot,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “Everyone got good playing time.”

Luling was the type of opponent you can judge how the team has progressed, but it does allow the coaches another game of assessing how much improvement has transpired.

Javier Mendez making switch from football to basketball

hammered the Hawks, 81-38.

Yes, you read that score right. Canyon Lake did not respond to Llano’s press and turnovers was the result to this dismantling.

“We shot the ball poorly and Llano pressed the whole game and we were just not ready for it,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman opened.

Canyon Lake had only one practice with the players that just finished their football season and so a little rust and getting into basketball shape could of been some of the reasons for this blowout.

“That plays into it,” Coach Chapman said. “We hope to have those guys basketball ready by our next game and a lot of what we are doing this year is new those players too.”

The Hawks were as cold as the weather outside and this snowball gathered speed as each quarter transpired.

“Even when we did break the press we were not able to take advantage,” Coach Chapman closed.

Skyler Tschoepe and Robert Woods did not play in this opening game for those football athletes that double with basketball also. They will be ready for varsity next week.

This team will have better days, and the good news is games before district are for working out kinks.

The Hawk Football team proved that a 3-7 team can at least two rounds in the playoffs so wins and losses before district are just Christmas Ornaments.
