showdown.

That same improvement was also seen between the first and second half as CL had a different resolve when they took the field starting the third quarter.

“When we look back at the Hays game and how many freshman they had playing, I told the players that it does not matter how many the other team has, they can only play with 11 players the same as we have,” Head Freshman Coach John Barthels said. “We hit the hole quicker in the second half and that was one of our adjustments we made at halftime.”

The Hawks had the ball only once when they held The Bears with 2:10 left in the third quarter and then lost the ball on downs with 2:45 left in the fourth quarter.

Canyon Lake did not lose a game all night….let that sink in.

The Freshman team won 2-0, the JV team won 2-0, and the Varsity won 3-0.

Canyon Lake Freshman girls started with a tough first game but finished with a more consistent second game and ran away with that second game and the match, 25-23, 25-12.

Llano just had too many unforced errors in that second game and Canyon Lake made sure that the Orange-Yellow Jackets would not get back in the game.

Bracken Doesn’t Need Instant Replay in Win over Logos, 34-30

Saturday, September 7th, 2013

After further review…6-Man Football should start a petition of having plays going to replay.

Bracken Christian made that concept a mute point as the win was put on their record when they wore out the Logos Lions, 34-30 last Friday night in the Garden of Eden. (Houston)

“I have said all week that we wanted to play better and we did not fold it up and responded,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said.

Back to the ‘instant replay’ saga.

Hawks Are Reborn in Loss to Somerset, 47-35

Saturday, September 7th, 2013

Canyon Lake had an opposite word game. What happened last week was just the opposite in this game with Somerset.

There is an old adage that a team will improve the most between the first and second game and the Hawks had already scored more points than the Blanco game on their first drive.

“We had a good offensive line tonight,” Head Coach Charles Drum started. “Our offense was totally different than the way we played last week. I’m proud of our offensive line.”

McGuire Johnson was the workhorse on this night as he rumbled for two touchdowns in the first half and helped Canyon Lake regain a lead going into a delay of game stoppage as thunderstorms and lightning threatened the area.

JV Hawks Can’t Hold Lead to Bulldogs, Lose 16-14

Friday, September 6th, 2013

It was a game that a fourth quarter comeback led to a victory…the only difference on this Thursday

night for the Canyon Lake JV team was being on the wrong end of that score, losing 16-14 to Somerset.

Last week, the Hawks responded with 19 points in a 4th quarter blitz over Blanco giving a nice ride home with three point win.

This time it was Somerset winning a game in that same stanza by scoring 14 unanswered points in a game your Hawks let fly away.

That flight was an 81 yard pass play with just one minute left on the clock that spelled Canyon Lake.

“We started great,” JV Coach Brian Owens stated. “This is something every JV team has to experience and they will need to learn from this lesson.”

“They (Hawks) did everything we asked and we just have to have toughness and intensity that will last till the end of the game…we hit a plateau during the middle of the game and we never regained our momentum.”

Stadium last Thursday evening.

Those two points did not result from a safety, rather an opportunistic Tyler McCleary caught a wayward pass on a two point conversion and ran untouched 97 yards for two points.

A couple of Bulldogs looked like they might have a chance of catching McCleary, but after reaching the 10 yard line int route to the goal line, McCleary seemed to turn on the afterburners leaving the opposition with no chance of catching him.

“I just held my hands up and if I would not have had on my gloves, then I would not of caught it (the ball),” McCleary said calmly.

BCS has Glimpses but need a Longer Look after Loss to AHC

Saturday, August 31st, 2013

Bracken Warriors started their year with a loss as Austin Hill Country Knights jumped on the home team with an answer  and then some for every touchdown but Bracken scored.

There are glimpses of great play, but those glimpses just don’t last long enough to gather that elusive ‘momentum’ word.

“Our goal this week is to play better and play four quarters,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields said. “In order to do that we will need to start playing with a sense of urgency.”

What air that was in the balloon seemed to be sucked out as soon as Bracken failed to score on their second possession while resting on the three yard line with nothing to show for a drive that could of tied or put BCS in the lead.

Hawks on Learning Curve in 13-6 Loss to Blanco

Friday, August 30th, 2013

Hawks have started their learning curve in a loss to Blanco on Friday at Hawk Stadium, 13-6.

Classes started this week at Canyon Lake and for those students that put on pads had to learn some hard lessons on Friday night and will certainly be doing some homework as they now prepare for Somerset next week.

“This was a typical game with Blanco,” Head Coach Charles Drum started. “The last time this happened in 2010 we went two rounds into the playoffs…and that is what we told the boys.”

Keep Your Eye on the Prize, on Field Goal Win over Blanco JV

Mike Thorpe, Matt Adams, and Tim Romero pose after each having a improbable play in CL's comeback win

Mike Thorpe, Matt Adams, and Tim Romero pose after each having an improbable play in CL’s comeback win

Canyon Lake JV started their season after three quarters into the game with Blanco offensively on Thursday night as the Hawks found gold in that quarter with 19 unanswered points in a historic win.

The game was not a good start to this season but perseverance was dialed up as the Hawks started their onslaught just in time for a timely victory, by keeping their eye on the prize.

Offensively, Canyon Lake had not done much beginning this match.

Off Plays First Downs Yards Ave Per Play Turnovers
First 3 Quarters 21 1 56 2.7 3
Fourth Quarter 12 4 179 14.9 0

Now you can see how CL just turned on the light for a dominating fourth quarter.

Defensively, Canyon Lake was impressive in only giving up one touchdown on the Panthers first drive of the game and then shutting Blanco down for the duration of this contest.

Three fumbles with one being returned like a hand off from 53 yards away from the goal line kept CL from getting any pressure on Blanco.
