Softball: Hawks Get a Win over Navarro, 2-1

Friday, April 5th, 2013

A big win for Canyon Lake over Navarro helps give a focus to the Hawks needed finish this season strong.

Pitcher Alexis Robinson struck out 14 Panthers in this game and the Hawks will certainly trade a pitching game like this versus a great game from the plate.

The Hawks struck for two runs in that first inning and that would be all they would need as Robinson certainly had command of the strike zone.

Senior McKenna Beseda helped with a double and scored in that first inning along with Kelsey Ahrens for what would prove the be the winning run.

What this game said loud and clear was that this Hawk team does not have to be on fire from the offensive side of a game in order to get a win.

The Panthers Herzog was one of the players that was a thorn in the side of Canyon Lake’s road to a victory on this rain delayed game.

So with three batters that were silenced in this game in Robinson, Brianna Young, and Lilimae Daily this victory gives a important message that the Hawks don’t have to be on fire from every player to pull off a win.

Lady Hawks 1600 Meter Relay Team has a High Cost for Shirts

Sunday, March 31st, 2013

Canyon Lake lowered their 1600 Meter Relay by nine seconds at the Hawk Relays last week

Canyon Lake New and Improved 4x400 Meter Relay Team (Brookelynn Helmke, Hannah Graves, Amber Ramsey, and Mariah Ellis)

and with that time now have the best results in District 27-3A.

Not only the best time this year among fellow District Schools, but also their time of 4:10.53 was a new standard for future CL 1600 Relay teams.

The good news is that the Hawks have at least two more weeks to see how low they can go to set an all time standard.

Mariah Ellis, Hannah Graves, Brookelynn Helmke, and Amber Ramsey were in control of this relay from the beginning to end.

This is a good nucleus of students which has a lot of potential as this season now gets into a much more serious stage.
Ellis a Sophomore
Graves a Junior
Helmke a Junior

Lady Hawks Triple Their Pleasure at the Hawk Relays

Friday, March 29th, 2013

The Canyon Lake Lady Hawks continue to impress this Track Season as they finished 5th with

Trena Lorett Jumping and Scoring for CL

their Varsity while the Junior Varsity finished in 3rd only behind Canyon and Hays.

First off the Hawks had Marisa Ellis match her high jump best, but she also had her best Triple Jump of the season going over that 37 foot barrier.

Canyon Lake might change their name to Canyon (we can Triple Jump over the) Lake High School soon.

Between the Varsity and JV teams Canyon Lake totaled 42 points in that one event. Another way to calculate this Feat is in traveling 203.11 Feet or over 2/3 of a football field.

Here are their Finish from Top to Bottom:
Marisa Ellis 37'3.75
Mariah Ellis 33'11.5
Trena Lorett 33'3.5
Bailey Drum 32'5

Hawks Aim on Finishing Strong in District after Win over Boerne

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Canyon Lake did what needed to be done with a convincing win over Boerne, 11-0 last Thursday night

Head Coach John Gallagher

in Boerne.

Pitcher Alexis Robinson struck out the side the first two innings giving Boerne a statement that this game would not be theirs.

“After playing Wimberley we talked about how well we played except for one inning,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We took that intensity into the Boerne game and played a complete game.”

The Hawks needed this win after having some bad innings that would wreck a game in seconds.

“We came out confident and played as a team,” Coach Gallagher continued. “After scoring one in the first and two runs in the second, we felt we could dominate.”

Dominate is what CL did and that will help instill that confidence as they continue their road through District 27-3A cities.

Robinson has had some problems during a game with walks and that would not be an issue in this contest as she struck out 11 Greyhounds.

“She (Robinson) improved her walks total and gave up just one hit that went six feet down the third base line,” Coach said gladly. “Defensively we had only one throwing error and (McKenna) Beseda made a great over the shoulder catch going towards the fence.”

Baseball: Hawks Lose Series to the Billies, 9-4

Friday, March 29th, 2013

The Hawks drew blanks again against Fredericksburg as they lost the season series, 9-4.

Senior Travis Walker

Canyon Lake did take the lead with one run in the first two innings and also tied the score in the top of the fifth inning before those flood gates opened up with a Billie six run inning.

Nick Cahill led the offense with a double and two hits in the game.

Kyler Huff took the loss as CL’s pitching could not solve the strike zone by walking 10 batters in this contest.

Both teams finished with five hits but walks will kill you and now Canyon Lake needs to get back on track fast as they have little room for mistakes as the district games continue.

Canyon Lake will play Bandera next week in hopes that those Bulldogs will stay in the Bullpen and give the Hawks some momentum as the season heats up.

CL Boys Track Improve Come in 4th Place at Hawk Relays

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Canyon Lake Boys Track Team decided to have a coming out night as several Tracksters decided

Garhett Grundhi, Javier Mendez, Doug Hubnik, and Jordan Anderson ran the 4x400 Meter Relay Team finished 2nd at Hawk Relays

to entertain their home crowd with some personal bests.

Branson Belcher had a new CL Record in the Triple Jump as he finished 5th Place with a leap of 40’11. That jump now has him with the second best jump in District 27-3A schools.

Todd Pippin had the previous record in 2011 in Blanco when he soared 38’9.25 feet.

Christian Dittman was in our spotlight last week when he finished third in Wimberley. This week Dittman hit the Moon with a vault of 14’3 a mere 15 inches higher than his previous best of 13’6.

Dittman has already beat his previous best in Canyon Lake when he hit 13’0 last year.

Jordan Anderson also beat his best in the High Jump when he finished first at 6’6. That jump tied Chase Eddington who hit that same height in a 2010 Track Meet in Brady, Texas.

Thomas Gregory also had a personal best of 132’9 throw in the Discus beating his best from last year of 126’11 during the District Meet.

With injuries, sickness, and other sports taking some key athletes out of events this week, Canyon Lake had to switch several students to events that in many cases they have never competed in.

CL not invited to Party in Loss to Fredericksburg, 12-6

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

At least this was not a ‘Heart’ breaker game, but it hurt just the same as Canyon Lake had pitching,

The Hawks Tyler Vinson

hitting and fielding woes all come to the same party at the same time in their loss to Fredericksburg, 12-6.

The Billies sent nine batters to the plate in that first inning giving CL a taste of what might happen, but then Canyon Lake also responded with five runs in their next two innings to take a one run lead and momentum.

Four of CL’s six hits were in those first two innings as they could only scrape across to more runs in this game.

Some very good defensive gems were also present at this party that turned bad.

JJ Nance had a great play in right field when he fielded a hard hit single and threw the first base runner out at second base.

Kyler Huff in centerfield also threw out a runner trying to advance to third in that first inning resulting in a double play on a fly ball out.

Nick Cahill then pegged a runner trying to score on a single at home plate and Catcher Michael Brady had the honors of tagging a Billie on the ear.

A double play started by SS Peyton Sipila in the second inning kept Fredericksburg at bay by letting Pitcher Ryan Hutcheson facing the minimum.

Softball Hawks can’t hold Lead to Texans, 12-5

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

CL’s Softball team was finally subdued by the Texans as they lost their lead and were succumbed, 12-5 on

Senior Vicky Henderson

Tuesday night.

The Hawks had a one run lead when errors and walks finally took its toll and caused an eight run inning that was too much to overcome.

Kelsey Ahrens and Liz Henderson both led Canyon Lake with two hits a piece.

Vicky Henderson had a squeeze bunt and two rbi’s in this contest that kept this game in limbo until that last inning.

The Hawks outhit Wimberley but they also out errored the Texans and just gave our friends to the north too many base runners adding in all of the free passes (walks).

Canyon Lake will turn around for another game in Boerne this Thursday as they will try to get back on track before the Easter Break.

JV Hawks have Walk in the Park in Wins over Wimberley, 9-5 and 7-6

Monday, March 25th, 2013

Hawks had a walk in the park with two wins in Wimberley on a cold Monday night.

Pitcher Hayden Dubois Wins Nightcap of Double Header Sweep in Wimberley

Canyon Lake outhit the Texans by 13, but walking nine players kept this game close as the Hawks completed a double header sweep after a 7-6 win in their first game.

“We won two tight ball games tonight,” Coach Brian Owens said. “It is those little things with the teams enthusiasm and communication on the field that win tight ball games.”

“Nick Kissell, coming in for Austin Headrick in that first game when the game was on the line and holding Wimberley that allowed us to comeback and William Volz doing the same thing in game two.”

Starting pitcher, Hayden Dubois had a no-hitter when Coach Owens went to the mound in the bottom of the fourth after allowing a couple of runs on walks.

Yes, it was a no hitter, but with seven walks Dubois certainly did not have command of the plate on this night.

“I went to get him because he was getting tired,” Coach Owens said. “He played hard in that first game and his legs were dead.”

On if he thought about letting Dubois continued pitching since he had a no hitter, “I did not even know he had a no hitter. But even if I did know, he (Dubois) would not complain because he is a team player.”

Lady Hawks Can’t Plug Dam in Loss to Bandera, 12-2

Saturday, March 23rd, 2013

The Lady Hawks had the lead and then a dam broke and C-Lake could not hold the Bulldogs in their 12-2 loss on Friday night at Hawk Field.

Canyon Lake had just one error in those first three innings and a small one run lead and showed much promise.

There were however a lot of errors in that Lake and when that dam broke, CL had seven in their last three innings of work.

“We played hard early and had momentum and that one inning did us in,” Head Coach John Gallagher surmised. “We need to overcome those mistakes, but once it started, then it just got worse.”

First Three Innings Second Three Innings
Hits given up 0 8
Runs given up 0 12
Errors committed 1 7

Night and day for Canyon Lake and when those leaks started the Hawks did not have enough fingers to plug all those holes in that dam and the inevitable happened forming a Canyon within minutes.

Alexis Robinson did reach base all three plate appearances and Kelsey Ahrens did have a shot that almost cleared the fences but it was way too little to help save this dam.

Now Canyon Lake will travel to Wimberley this next Tuesday with a game that hopefully they can keep that momentum for a whole game.
