Hawk’s Baseball have rough day in Llano Tournament

Friday, March 8th, 2013

Southpaw Cody Powell

Canyon Lake had a bad day in Llano tournament on Thursday as they took it on the chin in games with Liberty Hill and Taylor.

In the game with Liberty Hill, CL could not solve their pitcher with a total of 13 strikeouts. When you only need your defense to field eight outs, then many times the end result will be a loss.

The Hawks did have enough base runners to do more damage, but the strikeout pitch would help the pitcher to survive for another inning.

Hawks Lose to the Billies, 8-6

Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

Senior Centerfielder Daniel Camarillo

Canyon Lake has served notice that this season there will be no cake walks in District 27-3A and laugher games.

Ten of last years district losses were by four or more runs and this time the Hawks used just two hits and left this game within two runs of staying alive.

Michael Brady had one of those hits in the form of a double and driving in two runs to get the ball rolling.

With a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning, CL had a chance of getting that all important win to start district play.

Four runs later by Fredericksburg had the Hawks in a hole that could not be filled and this eventual loss.

The good news is this district has three games with each school and that should give CL plenty of time to start getting those important wins.

Now it is time to get in front of that line to get some cake and eat it too!

Softball: Hawks Lose by Inches to Hyde Park, 8-7

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013

A game of inches would be a literal assessment of Tuesday’s night loss to Hyde Park at the CL’s Softball

Short Stop Vicky Henderson

Complex in their 8-7 outcome.

Two batters reached base on errors with two base hits and a walk that left two runners stranded after a ground out to the Panther third baseman. The inning did have two scores but after Vicky Henderson was called out on a slide at third left the Hawks having to claw to get in scoring position again.

That out on third would of been the tying run.

Hyde Park is a TAPPS IV school and has a good ball club, but now CL wishes they had another chance at this Panther club after getting so close for a game that looked to be a runaway.

The Panthers started the first inning with a three run home run and then added another four spot in the top of the third inning for a 7 run lead.

Canyon Lake finally scored some runs in the third giving a sense vulnerability to this Panther team.

Spark plug, McKenna Beseda started this inning reaching base on a fielding error. The Hawks finished this game with a total of six batters getting on base in this same manner.

Hawks Lose to Lytle, 6-5

Sunday, March 3rd, 2013

Hawks lost their first game on Saturday to the Lytle Pirates, 6-5 ending their tournament chances

Freshman Cameron Berger

of advancing to play more games.

Don’t take this wrong, but winning all your games in a tournament is not the reason why these games are scheduled. Simply put, it is for repetition for these players as they prepare for district games.

Yes, a win would of been even better, but Coach Gallagher is after a bigger goal than winning all these games. Gallagher is in evaluation mode.

CL did have a chance to win this game and might have pulled it out if the ‘time’ limit would not have stopped action. But losing a five inning affair would give the Coaches plenty of data to look at to see what they might want to do when the real season starts.

Case and point was an at bat by Freshman Cameron Berger in the top of the 5th inning.

After Kelsey Ahrens reached base on an error on the Pirate center fielder, Canyon Lake had coaxed a runner (Sharon Alexanders) to third base but two of the next two batters had struck out.

Enter Berger to the plate with two outs and the Hawks needing a run. After two pitches and two strikes, Berger was in a hole.

Hawks Start Track Season in Blanco

Saturday, March 2nd, 2013

Canyon Lake Tracksters have a successful go as they prepare for another season.

Blanco was their first stop around the track and will soon see how improvement implements itself as several athletes will be testing their bodies for an ultimate goal of becoming better as the season progresses.

Marisa Ellis and Jordan Anderson won all of their events entered as they both look to repeat a trip to Austin this Spring.

Ellis won both the High Jump and Triple Jump while Anderson was first in the 100, 200, 400, and High Jump events.

Next meet will be this coming Thursday in Hays as this season starts to get in gear, don’t miss some incredible athletes if you are in the area.

Hawks Lose to St. Michael’s but Get a Win Anyway

Friday, March 1st, 2013

Canyon Lake won another game on Friday night, it just so happens that it was a previous

Senior Daniel Camarillo

contest against Marble Falls as the Mustangs were playing with an ineligible player.

However, on the game played on the field tonight, Canyon Lake lost a one run game to St. Michaels as that clutch hit just could not be found.

Recap: Playing in tournaments is tough on many teams based on how deep a pitching staff they might have.

St. Michael’s was playing their second game to CL’s third game, so advantage to St. Michaels in the arms race.

This game last season might have been a laugher when you consider that the Hawks barely had nine players much less enough pitchers to put out on a mound to help give CL a chance for a win.

CL Softball is First Seed after first Day in Blanco Tourney

Friday, March 1st, 2013

CL’s Softball team righted their ship Thursday in their opening round of games in the Blanco Tournament.

Canyon Lake won two games and lost one in their seeding part of this tournament. With those two victories to start the day, allowed Coach John Gallagher to rest and play many of their other players in their game with Poth to finish up the day.

Freshman Alexis Robinson threw two no hitters to help put Canyon Lake as the first seed waiting to play the fourth seed todays action of that other bracket.

In Robinson’s first game she had six strikeouts and five walks and no earned runs and then upped the antie in her second game with 10 strikeouts while walking four players.

McKenna Beseda had the batter’s box well in control as she was three for six with two doubles to hang on her wall.

Now the Hawks still have some work to do in getting their stride in order taking on District foes in a few days.

But first taking care of business this Saturday starting at Noon will be next on their docket for Canyon Lake.

CL Girls Track Meet is Off and ‘Running’ or ‘Dashing’?

Friday, March 1st, 2013

Junior Runner Hannah Graves gets ready to Dash back into Action.

Canyon Lake began their Dash/Run around the track last night at Blanco Track Meet.

There are several athletes that have a chance in having some good results by the time April rolls around.

Junior Hannah Graves should be in that mix as she had an opportunity to participate in the Regional Meet in Corpus Christi last year as a Sophomore in the 800 Meter Run.

Graves ran a 2:36.25 in that meet trying to qualify for the finals. She had a best of 2:27.78 during her season and if Graves can improve, then a chance for meets later in the season is in her future.

“I felt really good,” Graves started. “With it being cold, I was surprised on how I felt going into my race.”

Graves will also be trying to increase her work load this season as she also runs the 400 Meter Dash and will add a Relay to her repertoire.

“I had a good pace but I really want to build my speed and running the 400 should help my 800,” Graves said strategically.

Distance runner or Dash runner, Graves will be on both sides of that fence as Track terminology seems to mention anything under a 800 Meter run as a Dash and any run over that distance will be classified as a Run.

CL Hawks Split Baseball Games in Comal Tourney

Friday, March 1st, 2013

Canyon Lake (5-2) split their two games to open the Comal Tournament yesterday at Hawk Diamond.

Center Fielder Daniel Camarillo

Once again this Hawk team is starting to show that depth might be able to give CL a chance for each game they play.

Logan Felch is the ace of this bullpen and will only see a couple of innings due to a start against Fredericksburg next Tuesday night to open District 27-3A play.

Usually that would mean a drop off for other games due to depth problems on the mound.

Ryan Hutcheson took his first loss with giving up two runs and two hits to Lehman in the first game.

“We had costly error and stranded some runners,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “Did not play badly but we just could not seem to get that timely hit.”

Canyon Lake had three hits but the most glaring number in this loss were those three errors.

It was a different story in CL’s game with El Paso Parkland as they scored in every inning but one and amassed 12 hits in this win.

Take the more important number and you will really make sense with this victory, one error.

Senior Travis Walker pitched a gem in this contest as he scattered six hits while giving up only three runs.

Meanwhile in the other dugout Canyon Lake found their real bats and had several extra base hits to bury the EP Matadors.

“We played really well in this game,” Coach Dunavant commented.

CL Hawks Boys Soccer Will Finish their Season at Home

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

CL Hawks Boys Soccer team has been sent home after their last game in Wimberley last Tuesday after fighting but coming up short in the 2-0 loss.

“I thought we played well,” Head Coach Miguel Albrecht said. “We had a couple of chances but could not finish them, we made two mistakes on defense and they scored.”

Canyon Lake will now have a chance to see if home cooking might be the answer to turning around this season.

“Our next four games will be at home and we are looking forward to playing at home again,” Coach Albrecht finished.

Canyon Lake played all of their first round of District games on the road and now have a chance of turning around this season playing at home for the next month.

Good Luck and let your Mom make you some great meals to help in getting us some wins.
