Hawk Freshman Leave too Many Points on Court, Lose 59-45

Saturday, February 9th, 2013

Canyon Lake Freshman suffered a subpar second quarter that was too much to rekindle in their loss to Fredericksburg, 59-45.

A three for fourteen from the field in that quarter was enough to bury the Hawks while Fredericksburg buried three pointer after three pointer.

Both teams were evenly matched for the other three quarters as Robert Woods once again had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Hayden Lee also had some very nice drives to the basket in helping to keep the Hawks close to their visitors.

Free throws were not free for CL as a 4-13 tally would indicate. Oh yeah, Fredericksburg does use that word ‘Free’ for their Throws.

“I am very proud of the way we played tonight,” Coach John Barthels opened. “This was the first game in a long time that we kept our composure against a press and we up tempo defensively.”

Canyon Lake did have some spurts getting Fredericksburg’s lead back into single digits.

“The score might not reflect good defense, but were where we needed to be initially and force them to be out of rhythm, unfortunately one of the two areas we did not do well was rebounding,” Coach Barthels finished. “We did get 29 points from our big men tonight and I am really looking forward to seeing this group develop next year.”

Hawk’ JV Have Lead for :01.3 seconds in Win over Billies, 58-57

Friday, February 8th, 2013

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity scored eight points in the last 40 seconds to overcome a seven point deficit, beating Fredericksburg last Friday night.

Fredericksburg had a lead or was tied for 31:58.7 of this game and Canyon Lake took over for :01.3 and that lead is still there at this writing.

Having trouble in the first half in getting the ball down the court was the culprit in playing catch up for this game.

The Billies press was not giving the Hawks any chances for shots and proving that Fredericksburg’s 47 point win last go around would be more of the same.

Canyon Lake Junior Varsity had other plans however as they started inching back into this game after intermission.

“The first half we were not attacking Fredericksburg’s press and allowing them to trap us,” Coach Brian Hooper said with his lost voice. “We talked about getting the ball and taking it up the court instead of sitting back and allowing them to trap us.”

“We started dribbling through the press and that was allowing us to get some calls.”

Sean Nolan made his presence known again with just one missed shot in this contest and that miss was retrieved by Nolan with a put back.

Friday, February 8th, 2013

Canyon Lake Golf team started their season with an impressive 6th Place tournament finish at the Northeast ISD Spring Invitational held last Monday February 4th, at the Willow Springs Golf Course.

The Hawks posted a team score of 344 which placed them in sixth place out of 20 other schools.

Leading the way for Canyon Lake was Junior Skyler Tschoepe with a round of 82 which included nine pars and one birdie.

Senior Ralph Gonzales was only one stroke back of Tschoepe by shooting an 83 with nine pars on his round. Sophomore Garrett Winters shot 88, with seven pars and Junior JJ Herrera shot 91 followed by Andrew Riali finishing with a 97.

The Hawks next competition in Monday, February 11th when CL travel to Starcke Park in Seguin to compete in the Matador Spring Classic.

Hawk Freshman Bow to Pressure in their Loss to Navarro

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Canyon Lake’s Freshman squad did not have a good game in their loss to Navarro last night.

Last time these two squads met, it was a great comeback but an overtime loss to this same group of players.

Apparently, Navarro was allowed to put their Superman Cape on as the Panthers took a nine point lead in that first quarter and were never threatened for the rest of the evening.

“We turned the ball over too many times in this game and once again lost our composure when the pressure was on,” Coach John Barthels said. “We did play a good fourth quarter when I asked them to step up and get after it.”

Sounds like their might have been some frustration for the Hawks as the proverbial ‘Snowball’ going down hill syndrome.

“We still have a lot of things to get better at before the end of the season,” Coach Barhels said with resolve. “We will see what kind of fight we have left in us as we play the best team in our district as far as pressure goes this Friday with Fredericksburg’s press.”

It sounds like Coach Barthels has laid the ground work on what practices will be encompassing for the rest of this week.

That third quarter four point outburst will need to be corrected and then a turnaround might be forthcoming.

Come out and support the Hawks for their last game at home for this basketball season.

Block Party is Successful, CLJV Win, 49-34

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Canyon Lake JV basketball team swatted the Panthers around in their victory last Tuesday night in the Hawk gym.

Sophomore Skyler Tschoepthe Hawk gym.

“We have been on a skid the last seven games,” Coach Brian Hooper said. “Overall our press helped us in getting turnovers and got our offense going.”

Seven blocks recorded by five different players pretty much told Navarro that weak stuff was not going to be allowed as Canyon Lake controlled the boards with nine offensive rebounds and 37 total rebounds.

All but one player had at least one rebound and no player dominated the boards. A truly team effort as CLJV rushed out to a 10 point lead after that first quarter finishing with their 15 point margin of victory.

Sean Nolan was a recipient of a match-up offense as Navarro had no one who could body up to this 6’5 220lb mountain man underneath.

“We wanted to get Sean (Nolan) to work on finishing,” Coach Hooper said like a proud father.

In that final quarter Nolan’s longest shot was right under the rim, in fact all of his shots were right under the rim, hence only missing one shot for the game.

On having the offense isolating Nolan underneath in the fourth quarter Nolan commented, “Somewhat, because they (Navarro) don’t have any players my height and I was telling my teammates, Navarro had no one to match up with me,” Nolan said from his mountaintop.

Layups are not a Slam Dunk as Hawks lose, 45-40 to Navarro

Tuesday, February 5th, 2013

Lay ups can be one of the most mystifying shots in the heat of battle for basketball games.

Many times shots go in and out or just bounce the wrong way and when you add up those shots then you know that a game was well within your reach to come away with a victory, IF….if we only had those shots go in…

“We talked about turnovers during halftime,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman started. “When a team is not even pressing and you have 11 turnovers in a half….turnovers just diminish your chances of scoring.”

“Our turnovers were also timely ones,” Lucas also stated. “We have to come out and play with energy and tenacity and we just did not get that done.”

Canyon Lake was still right on that door step of taking a game against Navarro, but a missed lay-up here and an untimely turnover there will add up many times in giving way too many gifts to your opponent netting a loss.

The Hawks rebounded from a 13 point deficit to close to within two points late in the fourth but just could not find a way to get that shot in a loss to the Panthers, 45-40.

Canyon Lake has not had a warm reception at home with another loss and a 3-10 record.

That last home win was during the Canyon Lake Tournament a 48-47 win over Somerset, December 7th, 49 days and seven games ago.

Speaking of streaks, CL went over a quarter of playing time without scoring a point. The Hawks took a 12-10 lead and when they scored again with 1:05 left in the second quarter, Navarro enjoyed 14 unanswered points.

Without Spencer Wellings two buckets the quarter would of been a shut-out.

Hawk’s Make 11 Three Pt. Shots in Loss to Boerne, 74-56

Saturday, February 2nd, 2013

Canyon Lake had one of their best shooting games in their loss to Boerne last Friday night.

The Hawks went crazy beyond the arc in this game setting a new Canyon Lake record for three pointers in this game.

A record 11 three point shots made on just 18 attempts beat Canyon Lake’s old record of 9 shots made from the outer limits three years ago in a game against San Antonio Lutheran in the CL Tournament.

Record Three Point Games
Year Team Date 3pt/Shot Percentage
'12-13 Boerne 02/01/13 11/18 61%
'10-11 SA Lutheran 12/10/10 9/28 32%
'10-11 Blanco 12/20/11 8/20 40%
'09-10 Bandera 01/09/10 8/24 33%
'09-10 Lehman 11/24/09 7/17 41%
'10-11 Fredericksburg 01/11/11 7/18 39%
'10-11 Randolph 12/28/10 7/19 37%

Another slow start put CL on a steep hill to climb for the rest of this game. With just 20 points in that first half you can make an argument that two quarters like the last two with 38 points might have had the just right amount of pressure on those Greyhounds.

To no avail but it did allow Canyon Lake to open it up and respond accordingly with a red hot finish from the floor.

Lady Hawks Lose Last Home Game to Boerne, 39-32

Friday, February 1st, 2013

Senior’s Katie Williams, Hannah St. John, Tammy Dean, and Kelsey Long played valiantly in their final game at Canyon Lake on Friday night in a loss to Boerne, 39-32.

The stat line for this crew of girls was an impressive sight with this combined total:

                       3pt Pts Rebounds
             fgm-fga fgm-fga ftm-fta tot or-dr tot Steals Blocks
Four Seniors 8-18 2-4 3-5 21 1-8 9 2 1

Boerne was the front runner in district play and showed it as this game started when they jumped out to a nine point lead after the first quarter.

That Greyhound lead increased to 15 points as the teams went into halftime for instructions.

Canyon Lake answered the bell by cutting into that lead seven points after that third quarter, 33-25 deficit.

The Hawks were down just three points with 2:30 left in the fourth quarter, but the rim closed for the rest of this contest as Boerne closed with four points giving them their seven point victory.

Close but CLJV Boys were Playing Basketball not Horse Shoes

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

CL Boy’s Basketball cut it close in their loss to Wimberley last night, needing only one three point basket to win the game.

The Hawks stumbled in that second quarter spelling their doom as that helped the Texans to get all the breathing room needed to hold off this Hawk team.

Garrett Winters and Trendon Martinez both finished in double figures in this game with 20 and 10 points respectfully.

“Overall, it was the best we have looked since district has started,” Coach Brian Hooper said. “The guys played as a team and battled hard all game.”

Coach Hooper assessed the game, “A few too many turnovers that led to points and the lack of offense in that second quarter was the difference in this game.”

              1 2 3 4 Final
 CLJV 14 4 13 16 47

Freshman Boy’s Basketball Lose at Wimberley

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013
              1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
 CL Freshman 8 13 6 17 46
 Wimberley 17 13 15 16 61

Scoring – Z. Gregory 12, R. Woods 10, M. Montgomery 4, J. Arredondo 5, B. Ward 7, H. Lee 4, T. Soliz 2, Z. Sawyer 2

Hawks struggle in the 1st and 3rd quarters and lost their composure against the press as Wimberley had their way on this night.

“Zach Gregory and Robert Woods played well down low,” Coach John Barthels said.  “At times when we pushed the ball and looked up court we had good looks for open shots.”

Now as the learning process continues through the season this group of freshman will continue to finish this season strong.
