Boy’s and Girl’s Hawk Basketball Shoot Blanks

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Canyon Lake did not have a good day in competition on Tuesday night as the Hawks drew a blank in their games against Wimberley in girls and boys play.

CL Hawk girls basketball started their game scoring just one point in their first quarter and that start would be to hard to overcome in their loss, 44-30.

Katie Williams scored eight points to lead CL and also pulled down 10 rebounds, she was followed by Hannah St. John with six points.

Poor shooting continues to haunt Canyon Lake as they shot 22% from the field.

CL Boy’s basketball also could not keep up with Wimberley as the Texans increased their lead in that decisive fourth quarter for a victory over a ‘Backs to the Wall’ Hawk team.

Canyon Lake will now have to win out to have a legitimate chance for making the playoffs this season losing, 73-53.

Wimberley outscored CL 23-8 in that final stanza sealing this loss.

Girl’s Soccer: Games and Coaches Corner

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Coaches Corner with Soccer Coach, Katie McWhorter.

The ReSporter: Canyon Lake did not lose a lot of Seniors, how young is your team and who will be some athletes you hope to carry your squad?

Coach McWhorter: “Although we didn’t lose many seniors last year, we only have two this year, so our team is a very young team. We are working hard at becoming a more aggressive and explosive team in the hopes that we will be one of the top contenders in our district for playoffs.”

The ReSporter: You have another year of facing schools that are much larger than the Hawks, how will that translate with how the team will approach this season?

Coach McWhorter: “While we are facing schools that are much larger than us, our team has a lot of skill and fight in them. We participated in three tournaments preseason, and most of the teams we played were from much larger schools with excellent soccer teams – some of them were even 5A schools. We held our own and did a really good job in our play.”

Freshman Hawk’s Take no Bull from Dogs, 58-39

Saturday, January 26th, 2013

It was a bad news/good news story on Friday night for Canyon Lake’s Freshman team in their game with Bandera.

Bad News: The Hawks came out and needed some plumbing done on their side of the basket when they shot just 14 percent from the field in that first quarter.

Good News: Lucky for Canyon Lake, Gordon The Plumber was watching his son at his baseball practice on campus. During the First Quarter Break, Gordon was able to clear the basket and make it larger than the ball, giving CL a better chance for producing points.

More Good News: After that dismal start, your Hawks had the lead by five points, 10-5. Thanks to some good free throw shooting from Brandon Ward.

More and More Good News: For the remainder of this contest, the Hawks shot a salty 55 percent and were never threatened by this Bulldog club.

Just put Good News in front of each of these next points and you will have an idea of how dominating Canyon Lake was in training a Bulldog.

Next on the docket, your Hawks took the Bull from the dogs and applied it to Robert ‘Bull’ Woods as he proceeded to shoot lights out in this battle.

During the first quarter Woods did not have one shot. All of his shots were recorded in those last three stanzas.

‘Bull’ Woods was 11 for 14 from the field as he took over the lane and had his way with whatever puppy dog came into his kennel.

“We knew Bandera would be playing a 1/3/1 defense and so we were just going to feed the big guys,” Head Coach John Barthels said. “It was a good thing we got our bad quarter out of the way.”

Hawks’ Comeback Comes Up Short, Bandera 58-CL 50

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Canyon Lake lost a heartbreaker game in overtime to Bandera Bulldogs Friday night at the Hawk gym, 50-58.

Sharp Shooter Andrew Riali

“We battled our tails off,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “To be down 15 points and believe we could get it done and get back in it was a great testament to this team.”

The Hawks had 25 turnovers in their last game in Fredericksburg and were on a mission to not let that happen again.

“We started taking care of the ball and our goal was to have 12 or less turnovers in this game,” Andrew “Dead Eye” Riali exclaimed.

Mission accomplished as CL finished with nine miscues in four quarters plus an overtime.

That was a key element as Canyon Lake started their comeback in the second half erasing a 15 point deficit in those last two quarters.

A 34 to 19 advantage in the second half with clutch shooting and lock down defense was a great combination for Canyon Lake as the home crowd helped pump adrenaline into this comeback.

Freshman Lady Hawks Lose Overtime Game, 50-47

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

The Freshman Lady Hawks fought a tough game with Fredericksburg, but could not get that last basket for a win, 50-47.

“We came out slow and it all was very mental,” Coach Shannon Hoberer said. “Our focus was not great, but after halftime they calmed down and started to execute.”

Several players had key baskets and free throws down the stretch in staging an eight point comeback in that fourth quarter that helped delay the Varsity game due to only having three refs for this evening.

This Freshman game was called by one referee for almost the entire affair with reinforcements arriving with under two minutes in that critical fourth stanza.

Canyon Lake found themselves down nine and eight points in the second half before their last push that barely missed a perfect comeback.

In their earlier game, Fredericksburg blew out CL but that game was not as bad as those results garnered. The Billies had borrowed some JV players for the game when several players were sick for that game.

Lady Hawks Lose Game with Billies, 35-28

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

Turnovers and missed free throws spelled the downfall for Canyon Lake against Fredericksburg in their loss, 35-28.

Canyon Lake’s defense was pretty salty, but the Hawks needed some pepper for their offensive game as another low scoring game could not save the game or season leaving a bad taste in their mouth.

This loss will force Canyon Lake in a corner needing to win every game on their schedule to make the playoffs now.

Katie Williams finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds but finding points was much like finding eggs at a Easter Egg Hunt during a January night for most of the Lady Hawks.

Hard to do.

The Hawks shot 100% in the third quarter, the problem is having only three shots for that quarter.

With 21 turnovers in those middle two quarters CL could not get any shots to help stage a comeback.

“We need to play a tighter man to man defense,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher exclaimed. “The only chance we had to get back into the game was staying in our man defense.”

Canyon Lake will hit the road to Bandera this Friday to try and right this ship. Good Luck.

CL Lose Game to Billies, 54-37

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

The Hawks could not grab enough momentum from their previous game with Navarro to put a scare on Fredericksburg, as Canyon Lake fell to the Billies by 17 points.

Caleb was the only Hawk to finish with double digit scoring finishing with 12 points in the loss.

Canyon Lake now faces a must win game this Friday at home when Bandera comes to town.

Freshman Hawks Lose in OT against Navarro, 56-55

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

Canyon Lake Freshman Basketbal team lost a tough battle in Navarro last week in overtime, 56-55.

Navarro has a good club, but a bad fourth quarter left little in their tank to win the game in overtime.

“Tavian Soliz went from wing to point guard early and drove the lane and made some plays,” Coach John Barthels commented. “Robert Woods got several offensive rebounds and easy put backs.”

Both players responded with their best game of this season, but more work will be done as this upstart team goes to Fredericksburg today with a game against the Billies.

CL Hawks win first District 27-3A contest against Navarro, 59-54

Saturday, January 19th, 2013

Canyon Lake halted their seven game losing streak with a 59-54 win over Navarro last Friday night in Panther country.

The Hawks last win was against this same team, Navarro in the Randolph Tournament over a month ago.

This win was also the first District win in over two years. Yes, CL won a forfeit game two years ago against SA Hawkins, but this was an actual win which certainly means more.

Canyon Lake’s last win in district was 24 games counting that forfeit win with Hawkins. You would go back to 26 district games, when the Hawks beat Ingram Moore, 81-73 February 9th, 2010.

Paul Davis was on for this evenings game scoring 25 points while Andrew Riali finished with 17 points.

Caleb Kreiger contributed 12 rebounds and four blocks to his resume. With his next block he will pass Neal Whitehead for the most blocks in Canyon Lake history, both players are tied with 41.

Another milestone could be passed in the Hawks game with Fredericksburg with Point Guard Doug Hubnik needing only five more assists to pass Matt Magness total of 136 in his recently completed career.

Hubnik continues to rack up assists with 103 for this season.

“It was a gut check win, exactly the type of win that we haven’t been able to get the past few years,” a relieved Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “It was a great win and something we can really build on. It was good to finally get over that hump.”

The Hawks will now see what type of building they might be constructing when they face 19th ranked Fredericksburg Billies on their court tonight.

Lady Hawks Lose to Navarro Panthers, 55-34

Friday, January 18th, 2013

Lady Hawks had some good moments against one of the top teams in District 27-3A, but once the dam broke, Canyon Lake could not stop the onslaught as Navarro won going away, 55-34.

Canyon Lake went 10 minutes from the third into the fourth quarter without scoring a bucket while Navarro was scoring 20 points. In that time span, CL could not find any water in their lake and now find themselves needing to reverse this next half of district play with some wins.

The Hawks are not out of the race and if they can find that same feeling of wins from their non-district schedule, then anything can happen.

“We have not put together a full game yet this year,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher said. “We are just not making the changes needed.”

Canyon Lake spent their first two minutes of the second quarter controlling the back board and getting to that foul line.

The result was three points and closing the deficit to four points. Another Canyon Lake seven point run had the Hawks with a lead, 18-17 with over three minutes still to play in the quarter.
