CL Freshman Fly High over Bulldogs, 32-14

Friday, October 19th, 2012

The Canyon Lake Hawks flew all over the Bandera Bulldogs last Thursday night at

Timothy Romero and Zach Gregory weren't in the Dark during the Game!!

Hawk stadium, 32-14.

Two impressive drives to start this game and a heads up play gave all the momentum needed for a convincing win.

The first drive went for 60 yards on 5 carries with damage being done by Running Back Timothy Romero and a pass and run for Robert Woods.

Romero progressed with a longer run on each of his first three carries. Romero went for six yards, 10 yards, and then a final run of pure speed of 27 yards that capped off an impressive start.

Romero started this year as fullback and was moved to tailback after some injuries. “No one stepped up when they we were asked who wanted to do it (move up), so I just raised my hand and said I will do it. They asked who was the faster guy and when I see daylight I just go for it. But much of my yardage came from the line and everyone was doing their job and I just followed them.”

Canyon Lake was not finished, after holding the Bulldogs to a three and out, the Hawks started their next drive on the 27 yard line.

Six plays later, this Hawk team was in control, driving 73 yards in a way that any Bulldog would of been proud.

The Hawks have made some changes in moving players around to help maximize their product on the field.

One of those changes involved moving Zach Gregory from receiver to offensive line. When asked about the difference of positions, Gregory commented, “It is not as much of a change than I thought, I just have different blocking schemes.”

Gregory continued by talking about how on fire this Hawk team started the game, “We were real pumped up before the game, and we just kept that intensity down on the field…we have a motto, ‘Tougher Team Wins it’.”

It was all about the running game for this drive. Cody Davis chipped in with a six yard run, then Joseph Arredondo converted a third down with more than enough yardage running down the sideline for 33 yards. Romero book ended this drive starting with a 17 yarder and capped it off with another 15 yards.

CL got run over by a Greyhound, 24-26, 19-25, 16-25

CL student body doing their part of trying to scare a Greyhound

Canyon Lake Volleyball got beat by a Greyhound last Tuesday night at the Hawk gym in three games-24-26, 19-25, and 16-25.

There has to be something done about how the UIL comes up with their district scheduling. It does not seem right that a team should have to endure a five game road schedule after playing their first two games at home.

This does not say the records would of been different, but having a team go five games before they get back home is wrong. The cards that were dealt this Hawk team was a stacked deck and should not have been done this way.

The Hawks did play a very competitive game to start this match, when they took Boerne to the brink, losing 24-26.

Once again a bounce here or there might have swayed that elusive momentum if Canyon Lake could of finished that game.

Canyon Lake was also enjoying a 7-3 lead in their second game, only to see Boerne rally and finish off the Hawks after another tough game.

Canyon Lake Penalizes the Billies, 27-17

Canyon Lake’s bend but don’t break defense was up to the task as Fredericksburg could not throw enough at this Hawk team to win.

CL might have learned some valuable lessons from pre/district as they held on for a, 27-17 victory last Friday night at Fredericksburg.

“I’m proud of the kids and they bought into what we wanted done,” Head Coach Charlie Drum said. “One round at a time and we closed out a team after they (Fredericksburg) had tied it.”

“We changed how we practice and our scout team really prepared our starters in the last two weeks…he (Branson Belcher) made big plays and managed the ball well,” Coach Drum responded on questions about the team and how QB Belcher performed on this night.

On the Hawks third possession and third play of their drive, it would become the Doug Hubnik show.

Quarterback Belcher heaved the ball down the sideline to a streaking Hubnik in stride for a 56 yard pass play. Hubnik might have left some burn marks on the grass as he put on his afterburners, leaving the Billies defensive back grabbing air.

Mountain Valley 8th Grade Blanks Billies, 0-0 and 14-0

Friday, October 12th, 2012

Mountain Valley Eighth Grade ‘B’ squad did not get the better draw when thinking about start time for this game.

Rain was the winner when a downpour was going on through much to this contest.

Both teams could not muster 50 yards of offense as just holding onto the ball should of been worth extra points.

Mountain Valley started things off well when they took their first possession to the Billies four yard line. But this young club could not capitalize and gave the ball up on downs.

On this drive Andrew Neel to Mason Blackburn 32 yard pass play would be the biggest play and over half of the total offense for the game.

The play set the Hawks up deep in Fredericksburg territory, but the rains became the focus point as they continued negating a grand opportunity to score.

Canyon Lake JV Beat Billies, 21-14

Friday, October 12th, 2012

Fredericksburgs Junior Varsity had a perfect play call right off the bat, when on the kick-off, Canyon Lake thought they had the returner with a short return….then a pass laterally to Sammy Studebaker was set up with a wall of blockers.

Result? Seventeen seconds into the game and the Billies had a 7-0 lead and looking at a stunned Hawk team across the field.

All was not lost, however, as this Hawk team proceeded to march 75 yards in 11 plays tying the game with a touchdown.

Seven minutes was worked off the clock and so for comparison sakes:
Fredericksburg had the ball for 17 seconds and a score.
Canyon Lake had the ball for 6:14 seconds and a score.

The Junior Varsity had 30 yards through the air and 40 yards on the ground for their first drive.

Canyon Lake had another chance for a quick score, but an interception stopped a scoring opportunity.

On their first drive, Fredericksburg had three of four plays that gained 36 yards in the opposite direction. Errant snaps were the culprit on two of those plays and one was on a punt.

CL Volleyball Lose to Texans, Backs against the Wall for Playoffs

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Canyon Lake backs are against the wall now as this Hawks team will need to win their next two games to have an outside chance of making the playoffs this season.

The loss to front runner Wimberley now leaves Canyon Lake with a must win over second and third place, Fredericksburg and Boerne respectfully.

CL has shown they can compete and win against Bandera and Navarro. Navarro game was lost in the fifth game of the match in their last outing on the road last week.

Moral victories are just that, but this Hawk team did compete at a much higher degree that wasn’t there last time these two teams met over two weeks ago.

Bracken Christian Wins Homecoming Game, 58-0

Friday, October 5th, 2012

The Bracken Christian Warriors got to their Homecoming Dance early as they beat SA Lutheran 58-0 with

Sophomore Coy Zunker with a smile that says a thousand words

a Mercy game at Bracken Stadium on Friday night.

The SA Lutheran Mustangs took the opening kick and started the game with a very impressive drive. The Mustangs muffed the kick off and started on their three yard line.

Bracken was licking their chops with this opportunity, but were surprised by a methodical drive down the field. A 12 play drive that churned out 47 yards of real estate and had taken five minutes off the first quarter clock before the Warriors could finally get their bearings and halt the Mustangs at the Warriors 30 yard line.

“We started slow,” Head Coach Lloyd Fields started. “We were looking at a new offense and our defense was lined up incorrectly. We adjusted and then played much better.”

San Antonio Lutheran would not pass the midfield stripe for the rest of the game as Bracken’s defense became opportunistic and stingy.

Those 47 yards on Lutheran’s first drive, was also a high water mark for this Mustang team as the rest of their game went backwards to the tune of -23 yards.

The Defense also scored twice on two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

Coaches and 7th Grade 'A' Team talk after Victory over Boerne

Mountain Valley 7A team whitewashed the Greyhounds from Boerne on Thursday at Hawk Stadium.

The drive was right before halftime when this Hawk team took the ball on their 13 yard line after Caimen McDonough intercepted a Greyhound pass stopping a drive that would of had Boerne drawing first blood.

Mountain Valley set up shop on their 13 yard line and then proceeded to drive 87 yards in 12 plays to take the lead and in so doing taking the air out Boerne’s balloon.

Two passes for 32 yards and eight running plays that covered 55 yards and the touchdown.

The Hawks had 153 total yards and 87 of those yards were on this one drive.

Running back Micah St John had 68 yards rushing and 24 came on this drive, with the final seven ending this set of downs.

“I was able to see the what the defense was doing and then I started doing what the Coaches had taught me,” St John said. “I planted my foot and just went the other way.”

St John was commenting on how he got yardage on one of his runs and made yardage out of a play that could of had a loss on that play.

Volleyball: Hawks Get First District Win, Beat Bandera

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

Canyon Lake wins first District 27-3A Volleyball game against Bandera last Tuesday night on the road.

The Hawks won this match in five games in a topsy turvy manner. Winning the first two games of the match, then following that with two losses.

Going into their fifth game after losing the last two games had to be nerve racking.

“Last night we had our eye on giving us a chance at playoff and we knew that we had to win last night,” Head Coach Nicole Creek started. “The girls were extremely determined going into that game and did everything it took to win.”
