The second quarter was the turning point that allowed the Hawks to distance themselves from Navarro. Canyon Lake outscored their counterparts by eight points in the quarter and maintained that advantage through the rest of the game, beating the Panthers, 51-44.

Three of the players enjoyed double figures scoring, Caleb Kreiger 13, Andrew Riali 12, and Tyler Clark 11.

The three players combined to hit 13 out of 21 shots. That percentage did not disappoint as the rest of the squad pitched in finishing with a 54.0% from the floor.

BCS Girls JV hold AHC to a Field Goal Win, 36-3

Saturday, January 14th, 2012

The field goal for Austin Hill Country was scored with less than three minutes on the fourth quarter clock while the BCS JV basketball team used a round ball to secure the win, Saturday at Bracken gymnasium.

The Warriors started slow by hitting only two of their 15 shots in the first quarter.

However, the rim got much larger the next three stanzas as BCS shot 60% and put the game away.

Briana Martinez continues to have a hot hand scoring 11 points coming off the bench. Every Warrior player had a steal in the game as Austin Hill Country could not find the basket.

Canyon Lake Boys Lose to Billies, 45-35

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Canyon Lake took one on the chin from the Billies as Matt Magness returned to the lineup scoring 13 points in another low scoring affair.

The ten point loss was just a three points deficit with three minutes left in the game, as the Hawks had to revert to fouling Fredericksburg to help close the gap.

Magness was not only the high point player (13), but he also led the team with eight rebounds.

There were a couple more surprises, with five three pointers from four different players.

Paul Davis pitched in with two in the first half while Carl Cook and Ancel Morel helped out in the cause keeping the Hawks close with two three pointers in the second stanza.

“The bench did fabulous,” Coach Maynard surmised. “I’m proud of the bench players.”

Of the 35 points scored, the bench players once again contributed 19 points, as Coach Jeff Maynard shuffled the deck and had Morel and Cook coming in after tip off.

“Ancel (Morel) games have been much better when he is coming off the bench,” Coach Maynard closed.

Lady Hawks Lose in Overtime to Billies, 36-33

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

The bad luck Hawks have a chance to revamp their game as they will take a week off from games with an off date this coming Friday.

However, the game with Fredericksburg just added another anvil around the neck for a team with promise, but just not a enough trinkets to get them over the hump.

To say the game with the Billies was tight would be an understatement. The Hawks and Billies were tied after the first, second and fourth quarters of the game.

If the shooting and free throws were improved just a fraction, this team could be enjoying a great season. Now, Canyon Lake will need to take inventory over this off week to make sure they have their guns loaded for a stretch run that could still move them into the playoffs.

Whoever came up with the word ‘Free’ throw in basketball needs to come

back and have a do over on naming rights.

Canyon Lake Hawks could not cash in on the ‘Free’ throws when they needed too the most. A good free throw night would of been the difference maker in a game that saw the Hawks down as many as 13 points early in the first quarter.

In fact, the Hawks scored their first point on a free throw after the Texans had run up a 12-0 score in the first two minutes of the game.

Go back to an earlier game at the Canyon Lake Tournament and the same type of game transpired against Fredericksburg. That game was not pretty as the Hawks just dug themselves deeper and deeper after a similar start.

Against Wimberley, the Hawks were down 17-4 with four minutes left in the first quarter when the short handed Hawks started chipping away at what would’ve been an avalanche against the Billies earlier this season.

By looking at the stats for this game, you might wonder how Canyon Lake was even in the game, but not only were they in the game, but lost by only one point, in a heartbreaking loss at Wimberley.

Senior Caitlin Gillum last second shot rimmed out on a shot that would of sent the visiting crowd to their feet.

Canyon Lake took a 9-8 lead on a Amber Ramsey shot with 4:53 on the second quarter clock and held that lead until 5:19 in the fourth quarter.

In between that twilight zone, the Hawks lead by as many as nine points. The Hawks held the Texans to two points in the second quarter and used this quarter to forge into a seven point lead at intermission.

Lady Hawks Beat SA Hawkins, 65-24

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Canyon Lake Hawks turned on the jets and ran away from San Antonio Hawkins last Tuesday night, 65-24.

The Hawks got everyone in and the game was never in doubt after the first few minutes after tip off.

“(Amber) Ramsey gives us rebounds,” Head Coach Mary Beth Gallagher stated. “ I think the team is feeling confident and that is important thing for this group.”

Canyon Lake spread the ball around, but Amber West and Katie Williams reached double figures with 15 and 10 points respectfully.

Three more scored eight points, Ramsey, Caitlin Gillum, and Hannah St. John found the basket to their liking also for the game.

Canyon Lake will play a pivotal game this Friday at Wimberley. A win and the upstart program will put themselves squarely in a position for a district run where anything can happen.

Canyon Lake Girls Win First District Game, 50-26

Friday, December 30th, 2011

The Canyon Lake Girl’s Basketball team won their first district game in Bandera on Friday, 50-26, as Coach Mary Beth Gallagher emptied the bench in the runaway win.

“It was great to be at full strength again,” Head Coach Gallagher commented. “Everyone got involved which allowed us to see how we can play with a full bench.”

In a game played earlier this year at the Canyon Lake Tournament, the Hawks beat Bandera Bulldogs in a battle for third place. The score was 44 to 30, giving you the idea of how much CL has improved.

The main difference in the two games was the absence of Amber Ramsey her 12 rebounds and solid play with a new 1-2-2 defense.
