Baseball: Canyon Lake lose, 9-7 to the Billies

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

The Canyon Lake Hawks are 0 for 3 in District 26-3A play, but by watching this

team compete you will realize that it is just a matter of time for CL to break into the win column and start competing for a playoff spot.

Fredericksburg started with a bang, scoring four runs in the first inning that was highlighted by a three run homerun off the bat of Jacob Smith. The inning was elongated by an error, having the Hawks continuing on the abnormal amount of runs scored with two outs.

“We keep grasping at straws because we have so many youth issues,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant lead off. “We hit the ball better, we spent two days on it.”

Canyon Lake responded in the bottom of the first when Freshman Garrett Winters drew a one out walk, Travis Walker singled scoring Winters after advancing on an error earlier when Eckert tried to catch Winters off of first base.

Fredericksburg scored another unearned run in the top of the second after two outs, when Daniel Camarillo misplayed a ball in center field and the Billies’ runner scored on a passed ball later that inning.

Baseball: CL asks for Two Out Innings, Lose to Wimberley, 7-1

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Every run scored by Wimberley was after two outs and helped put Canyon Lake in a hole, but the Hawks would be advised to ask the District Office if they can play the rest of their District games with two out innings.

Wimberley used their clutch hitting to score a victory over the Hawks last Tuesday during a Spring Break week.

Canyon Lake had a chance to score the first run in the third inning, when Dylan Adams led off with a single through the gap. A sacrifice hit by Daniel Camarillo and a passed ball had Adams looking right down the third base line towards home.

With two outs, batter Travis Walker hit the ball lake a laser towards Adams who did a break dance routine dodging the ball.

CL Runs to the Bus at the Tivy Antler Relays in Kerrville

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Canyon Lake Boy’s and Girl’s Track Teams will have a week off after getting a cold

reception in Kerrville for the Antler’s Relays last Thursday night.

“It was FREEZING!!! 45 degrees and 20-30 mph winds not a good day for track,” Head Girls Coach Lacey Lambert said. “Before it got too cold… Marisa Ellis broke school records in the triple jump with 36’6” shattering the previous record as well as jumping 5’3” in high jump.”

Track is one sport where wearing more clothes will give you slower times. Football has pads and lots of exertion, where Track teams rely on less weight on the body so they can maximize their events.

Coach Lambert was very excited with some of the younger athletes, “JV Freshman Grace Allen also triple jumped for the first time and won with a jump of 31’7”.  Hayley Melone jumped 14’ in the JV long jump as well.”

Softball: CL wins Two Games before Rain Cancels Marion Tourney

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

The Hawks stayed dry in the rain as they outscored Marion and SAC 12-2 in  a

shortened Marion Tournament this past week.

When Canyon Lake took care of the three major areas in winning games.

Pitching:
Between Missy Romero, Briana Young, and Kelsey Ahrens the Hawks gave up only one run holding the two teams to just four hits.

Romero lowered her era to a miniscule 0.53, for those who might know the significance…the number stands for the number of runs given up in a regular seven inning game.

Using that criteria, Canyon Lake would only need one run to win games in which Romero is in the circle.

CL Hawk’s Freeze in Two Losses at Llano Tourney

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Canyon Lake had the two games that were as different as the weather.

Junior Kyler Huff

The first game was pleasant temperature wise and then by the start of the second game the temperature was 30 degrees colder and of course a wind that made it feel colder.

Errors were the culprit in both games as St. Michaels runs were all unearned in the middle part of the contest. As the Hawks lost their three run lead and finished the game coming within one run of tying the score.

In the second game, Taylor jumped out to a five run lead in the first two innings when Canyon Lake started inching back to within striking distance.

A three run fifth inning put a time limit loss on the belt for the Hawks as the warmth of the bus I’m sure looked to be a welcome site for the Polar Bears.

diamond last Tuesday night.

The wind was relentless as Canyon Lake finally figured out their strategy of winning going away.

Canyon Lake coaxed nine walks with eight hits to finally put enough runs across the plate to ensure the victory.

“It was a solid effort,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “That was probably our best effort for the year.”

Missy Romero had another solid game in the circle giving up three hits and striking out eight.

The Hawks had several key elements transpire during the game that gives you an idea that CL might have turned an important curve.

Baseball: Eyas Find Optimism in District Loss to Bandera, 1-0

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Optimism in a loss is not what a lot of fans like to hear about,

Freshman Garrett Winters

but this year’s Eyas (young Hawks) played an admirable game to start District 26-3A at Bandera, Monday night.

Junior Logan Felch was the losing pitcher, but giving up one run was something Head Coach Trent Dunavant can live with in order to give this young team some confidence.

“This was the best game we have played all year,” Dunavant started. “That was the kind of defense we need to play…now we are playing.”

CL Finishes with 4-1 Blanco Tourney Record

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

Canyon Lake Hawks had a good run at the Blanco Softball Tournament that

Briana Young

concluded Saturday in the Championship Round.

The Hawks disposed of Johnson City, Ingram, Poth and Lago Vista, before meeting up to a very good Llano team.

Canyon Lake has a lot of youth on board and getting this much action in over a two day period will only pay dividends. A lineup with only two Seniors will require some help and leadership from the players that might have just one year of Varsity ball.

The Poth game had a lot of meaning for Canyon Lake as they had been eliminated the last two years by this team.

“I was really pumped up for the Poth game,” Pitcher Missy Romero said. “It was time for some pay back!”

Baseball: CL closes Comal Tourney, 0-2 on Friday

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

Canyon Lake finished their final tune up before a District game against Bandera this coming Monday.

Garrett Winters

Garrett Winters

Antonian and St. Michael won their games by giving up just one error in the two games.
Hence the Hawks were not as fortunate as they totaled seven errors and leaving the door open for the damage.

Canyon Lake is very young and are starting two freshman in the middle of the infield, so needing repetition is a prerequisite for getting that part of the game under control.

Travis Walker pitched a complete game in the morning game and kept the Hawks close enough to pull out the game.

Michael Brady took the loss in the afternoon affair as St. Michael beat the Hawks for the second time this season.

Girls Track: CL Totals 43 points in Hawk Relays, JV total 75 points

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Canyon Lake found themselves with some pretty strong competition as they found

it hard to score in multiple events.

This competition will improve the team in future meets as the Hawk Relays had some teams that will do well when their District meets arrive in more than a month.

CL scored in seven of the events and seem to find many areas where a few more weeks of work outs will eventually pay dividends.

The Hawk Junior Varsity finished with 83 points and finished fourth scoring in 11 events.

Canyon Lake finished only five points from Wimberley as the two teams only had their Relay teams compete in last week’s Blanco Relays.
