Canyon Lake’s effort did not translate to points as Boerne showed the Hawks how a good shooting team can control a game and pulled away for a 22 point win, 63-41 at the Hawk gym.

The Hawks started the game in good shape as they scored 14 points with four assists, eight rebounds and a tied score after the first eight minutes.

That hot shooting quickly became a cold night shooting when Boerne outscored the Hawks by seven points and that same number for the halftime score.

If CL would of converted their free throws in that second quarter, then they could of had a lead or at least a much closer game.

The Hawks did come out with a great play to start the second half, finding Andrew Riali wide open under the basket for their first play, but a missed shot was an omen for what would become a familiar event for the remainder of this contest.

Hard to win when your highest percentage of shooting tops out at 33 percent and that was from the free throw line.

Canyon Lake had open shots but very few would find the bottom of the net. The Hawks almost shot as many three pointers compared to shots inside the perimeter for the game.

Caleb Kreiger led the Hawks with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Riali also found a double digit night with 12 points.

Paul Davis had 22 points in his first district game but in this game his shot would not go in as he drew a blank. Along with many of the other players on this Cold night.

“They’re a good team,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman started. “You pick your poison with a team like this. Guard their point man and he will find their inside game, or let him slash and he can find their outside shooters.”

“We battled and had some guys step up and played some big minutes and none of our team had any let downs.”

Canyon Lake will now go on the road as they play Navarro this Friday and try once again to get off this losing streak that has been infested with some Cold weather, don’t forget your coat.

Canyon Lake Lady Hawks have some encouraging signs that might help in climbing that hill for a chance to make the playoffs.

Free Throws is one of those times when teams can turn around a game. When a team is attempting to score points from their charity stripe, time stands still with points being scored without losing precious seconds on the clock while your team is in catch-up mode.

The Hawks have upped their ante for this part of the game by increasing their percentage to the good.

Before the Crockett game or the first 17 games this season your Hawks made 43 out of 100 free throws or 43% of their shots.

In their last five games (not counting Wimberley), Canyon Lake has made 59 shots out of 84 attempts. That will translate into a 70% improvement for the team.

Individually you might see how almost every girl has improved on their percentage.

Those numbers will and can add up for a team that is needing to shore up a couple more issues, but taking this season one step at a time will give you an idea that the climb is not that much further to be able to cash in on for some victories.

Canyon Lake will need to sweep Fredericksburg and Wimberley on their next round and steal a victory or hope that Fredericksburg slips up and loses a game that they were favored.

This is all based on an assumption that Boerne and Navarro are the two teams that will lead this season in district play.

Many of these items are fluid. The ReSporter just received the Stats for the Wimberley game while working on this story and that one item that might have caused this defeat was how the Hawks free throw shooting was back to how they were shooting in the first 17 games of the season.

Under 50% from the line in this game which was lost by four points. Yes, there had to be other variables going into that final score, but if you want to see that elephant in the room, then look no further than that free throw line.

The Hawks are one game under .500 in district play, but working on those little things can pay dividends. Good Luck!!

The ReSporter: Coach Dunavant, tell us what your

thoughts on that new district schedule where you played each team three times last season.

Coach Dunavant: “The teams that deserved to play in the playoffs got into the playoffs which many times might not be the case when you play twice with several games between contests. You have a chance of getting your opponents ace pitcher in both of those contests where other teams could have a pitcher that would be not as good.
This system gives you a chance to play a team and face more pitchers that can translate into a better chance of winning if you are better. All those better teams got in.”

The ReSporter: Tell us what your thoughts on how this group of players are doing in preparation for the upcoming season.

Coach Dunavant: “Yesterday I went down to the field and saw players knocking the ball around and playing the infield. We might have more infield depth than we have had in several seasons, which might help us in the outfield.”

“I feel pretty good with that depth and maturity, everyone out there has been on the varsity and all those lumps they have endured the past two years will payoff this year.”

“Now it is time to reap the reward and put into motion their game on the field. This is not a rebuilding year, this is a producing year.”

The ReSporter: When does improvement increase the most for players, Freshman to Sophomores, Sophomores to Juniors, etc…?

Coach Dunavant: “I don’t think their improvement happens based on what grade they might be in, they improve because they are guys that want to compete and be out there for something more. Many of our Seniors are wanting to play in college, so they’re going to be more intense their senior year than another player that might be wanting to play out that last game of the season.”

CLJV had many turnovers in their loss to Wimberley Texans last Friday night at the Hawk Gym, losing 56-35.

All but one player (Sean Nolan) had a turnover in this game and those miscues led to a game that got way out of hand during the middle two quarters.

Canyon Lake had 60 possessions in this game, with over half of those times with the ball resulting in a bad pass, double dribble, bad pass, three seconds, bad pass, charging call, bad pass, dribble off the foot, bad pass, etc, bad pass…

Take those 33 times without a chance to get a shot off and you have the game in a nutshell.

The Hawks shot 40% from the floor which would lead to a victory on most nights, but not on this turnover waiting to happen night.

Wimberley ran a press during this game and CL felt like the ball was Kryptonite based on how they were trying to throw the rock away.

The ReSporter needed another pen just to have enough ink to write down all those pesky turnovers Canyon Lake had during this four quarter affair on the stat sheet.

This is one of those games that Coaches are hoping the Press might need to leave and take care of some business somewhere, saving an explanation on what was just seen.

Credit for Coach Brian Hooper in stepping up to the plate to advance a theory most anyone in attendance would of been able to assess.

“We’ve got to get better handling pressure,” Coach Hooper said. “We got too much in a hurry and we did not do a good job in handling the press.”

Not a pretty game to say the least for a team your Hawks beat earlier this season.

Canyon Lake had a lead throughout the first quarter which looked like their best stanza for this year, but by the second half the Hawks got behind and could not catch up,  losing a hard fought battle with Wimberley, 66-55.

The Hawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead and even increased that margin to nine points but Wimberley finally warmed up and held a 35-33 lead going into the dressing room.

CL had their last lead in the third quarter after Andrew Riali had a put back off a miss as the Hawks led 38-37.

Paul Davis made two of his 22 points a minute later bringing Canyon Lake back to within one,  a 40-41 game but that would be the last time CL would smell a chance for a lead.

Wimberley finished the quarter outscoring the Hawks, 12-5 and an eight point lead going into a wild fourth quarter.

Nine of Wimberley’s 13 points were from the charity stripe in that last quarter as Canyon Lake was needing to foul and hopes for a miss and a chance to get back into contention.

Canyon Lake did bring out their press in that fourth quarter, but it might have been too late to help in the end.

“In hindsight we might have done better putting our press on earlier in that quarter,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “Wimberley did a good job of mixing up their defense but our biggest thing will be to watch film and see if we can get our defense and rebounding back.”

That might have been the key that kept CL out of contention as this game matured through the fourth quarter.

What we do know about Wimberley with two games in the books for District 27-3A, they will score at a much higher clip than the two teams the Hawks have played thus far.

Wimberley averages 56.5 points per game and has also held a common opponent (Bandera) to less points than Canyon Lake did, 23 points to 29 points.

Canyon Lake leads the league in defense giving up 35.5 points per game, but that might be more of a who have you played than a lock down defense.

Tonights game will help answer that quandary of questions as the Hawks will try to slow down that Texan offense and also increase their offense to give them a chance.

Canyon Lake will be depending on Katie Williams and Amber Ramsey to excel and how these two girls play will give you an idea of their chances of pulling off a victory.

Other keys to the game:

1. Taking care of the ball. This is a huge category for CL to embrace. Turnovers have been in abundance these last few games. Having over 25 turnovers has resulted in a loss in all but one of Canyon Lake’s defeats this year.

2. The Hawks need to improve on their offense and find a way to get their score to 40 or more points. The Hawks have struggled in this department much of this season and when facing a team that has the capability of scoring in bunches, then matching those spurts will get amplified.

3. Bench needs to get into the game and produce. When this is said, one might think production comes in the form of points. That is not what production is defined as in this game. A good illustration would come from Kyndall Drum and Kelsey Long. Both of these players are not in the game to score points as much as getting a key steal, asslst, rebound, etc.

The ReSporter: How are the players going into their game with Wimberley?

Coach Chapman: “The guys are in good spirits. The good thing about high school kids is that they are resilient and they forget things real quick. They’ve done a good job of staying positive and looking ahead. They are excited about starting district, and they have confidence and a belief that we are going to be successful.”

The ReSporter: What are you looking for ratio wise with your Assists to Turnovers game wise?

Coach Chapman: “In an ideal world we would like have a 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio, but more realistically, any time we can have more assists than turnovers we are doing good things.”

The ReSporter: What would be your number of Three Point shots per game? Yes, I know if they are making them, then as many as possible, but I’m thinking anything over 30% would be doable, based on a chance of getting more offensive rebounds off of shots from that far out.

Coach Chapman: “As a team we are not really concerned about the amount of 3’s we take. We are much more concerned about what kind of 3’s we take. If we are getting the ball inside and then kicking out for wide open 3’s then we will take those every time. We also like to take wide-open transition 3’s. The problem we run into at times, is that we take contested 3’s, which usually don’t go in and lead to empty possessions. When you shoot a 3 just for the sake of shooting it, then you run into a low shooting percentage.”

The ReSporter: Hey Coach, Softball is right around the corner and we are looking forward to how your team will do this season.

You mentioned that your major area of concern at the end of last season would be offensive production, is that still your number one concern?

Coach Gallagher: “I still think offense is my main concern. We will work hard on developing good basic techniques, power, knowing what pitch to hit, knowing what situations to bunt, hit and run, etc. Being smart on the bases, and confidence is their ability to put the ball in play.”

The ReSporter: How has that softball IQ been advanced throughout this offseason?

Coach Gallagher: “Through repetition on basics: fielding,throwing, and hitting. We are also using classroom talk through and script situations and watch video to help everyone learn the game better.”
