Softball: Hawks Start District with Win over Boerne 3-2
The Hawks have won five times the last two years in District play. The wins were bunched up between just two schools—Ingram and Llano.
Canyon Lake can now add Boerne to that list after gutting out a hard fought game on the road last Tuesday night in Boerne.
The day did not start well for the Hawks. Missy Romero the pitching ace was battling some health issues and to add to that was a defense that was battling the softball after committing five errors in the first two innings allowing the Greyhounds to take a 2-0 lead.
This Hawk team has made it to a 10 win season and with three more victories, will surpass the past two seasons in win totals combined. There is an air of confidence with Canyon Lake and the comeback win exemplifies that resolve.
“We were a little shaky coming out last night,” Head Coach John Gallagher said. “We had a good comeback and Missy (Romero) gutted it out. Our nerves showed early and they regrouped and got the win.”
The Hawks were led by the hitting of Alex Henderson with two base hits, one of the singles became a three base error allowing for two runs to score and tie the score. McKenna Beseda came around on the hit to score after getting the first hit in the inning.
Tiffany Arredondo then responded with a bunt single, stole second and then scored on a fielders choice off the bat of Katy Payne to score the winning run in that same inning.
This year looks like it could be a lot of firsts for this group of players. The coaching of the past few years from Melissa Lynch and now with the Coaching team of the Gallagher’s have a chance to bring the team home for some well deserved accolades.
The team will now bring that first district win home for a game with Bandera this Friday starting at 6pm. Come out and show your support for hopefully the next team to order T-shirts at the end of the season.
