Hawks Get Run Over by a Greyhound, 35-14
Canyon Lake Hawks go back to the drawing board as Boerne turns mistakes into touchdowns, as CL loses second consecutive game this season at Boerne stadium, 35-14.
What started as a nice looking game, suddenly changed in the second half to a Greyhound beating.
The Hawks started the game with another patented drive, as CL drove 80 yards on 11 plays and took the early lead, 7-0 after the Jake Robinson point after attempt.
The drive had a lot of Zach Henshaw, as the Senior running back accounted for 73 of the 80 yards for the first score. Henshaw had 53 yards rushing and 20 yards receiving on the drive.
Canyon Lake had two third down plays and both were within three yards for a first down or touchdown.
Boerne stalled on their first drive after covering 46 yards and then had an eight yard punt, the Hawks took over on their 29 yard line.
The Hawks would then go into a deep funk and would not see paydirt until the Greyhounds had run around the track several times resulting in 28 unanswered points.
Quarterback Wil Amick accounted for all but 10 yards for the Greyhounds in the game. For those needing a calculator, 400 yards either by the run or passing.
Amick’s favorite target? Paul Burns, burned up the turf with two touchdowns from 63 and six yards.
The Hawks could not take advantage as they kept shooting themselves in the foot, over and over and over and over again.

“We panicked offense to defense,” Coach Monzingo pointed out.
“We lost our composure,” Head Coach Matt Monzingo continued. “We didn’t cash in three times when we had the opportunity.”
Canyon Lake did pull to within 14 points scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter.
The 75 yard drive had 36 yards rushing for Henshaw, a 13 yard reception by Quinn Pike, two runs for 10 yards for QB Branson Belcher, and a personal foul on the home team.
On the Greyhounds next drive, CL’s do everything Jeremy Best intercepted an Amick pass setting the Hawks 45 yards from a ‘make it interesting game’ touchdown. The clock still showed nine minutes to play and plenty of time.
Canyon Lake drove to the four yard line when they gave it over on downs.
The Hawk defense forced a three and punt series, giving CL another chance only 43 yards from paydirt. The clock? 4:21 left in the game.
Five plays and an interception in the end zone put the hopes into the drawing box, where the Hawks will need to go as they retreat, ‘Back to the Drawing Board’.
The Hawks still have a good chance for the playoffs. Last season Canyon Lake was in the same boat with a 1-2 district record and the result was positive.
This year can be just as successful, the only ingredient needed is the right drawing utensils for that darn ‘Drawing Board’.
Canyon Lake will take the field next week for their last home game of the season against Fredericksburg. Come out and do some drawing.
