Canyon Lake has started another season and for the first time with a new man in charge.

Head Coach Charley Drum is no stranger to the Hawk’s sideline and now the curtain has been raised on his team from this time forward.

Canyon Lake started their season with a scrimmage in Georgetown against East View a new school about two years younger than the Hawks.

Running Back Eduardo Covarrubias scored from 65 yards out on the first play from scrimmage on a lead to the right side. He broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage, and then out ran everyone else to the goal line.

Counterpart Casey Coffee scored from 65 yards out on the second play on a sweep to the left side. He was pretty much untouched for the score.

Coffee scored again from 56 yards out on the 1st team’s second segment of plays.

Quarterback Branson Belcher added a score on a sneak from one yard out in the same segment. The score was set up by a 32 yard scramble from Belcher and two runs of 12 and 8 yards by Covarrubias.

The defense played well. Only gave up one big play of about 30 yards.

Other than that the defense played solid and limited East View to only short gains. “They (Georgetown East View) told us they were going to be in the “I”, but they came out in the spread and ran a lot of zone read and stuff that we hadn’t worked on all week. So with that said, our kids adjusted and still made plays,” Coach Lucas Chapman recalled.

In the live quarter, Coffee scored on a 42 yard run up the middle. The defense held them to negative 5 yards after two high snaps.

Senior place kicker, Jake Robinson added a 36 yard field goal as time expired in the quarter.
