goal and just were not responding offensively as much as the Texans.

Christy Fowler had the one bright spot as she dribbled the ball down the sideline with a minute left and was fouled giving her a penalty kick as she was nearing a chance to score.

This was all happening after Wimberley had scored just two minutes earlier for a 1-0 lead.

Fowler was good and both teams retreated for their halftime break.

“I just told myself that this would be the one,” Fowler commented on her score. “I had missed a PK (Penalty Kick) last year against Wimberley and it was the first one I had ever missed since I was 11 years old.”

That would mean sweet redemption for Fowler and Canyon Lake as the ball made the back of the net on this try and tying the score.

“The team was behind me and wanting me to take the shot, they were telling me, ‘you got this’,” Fowler recalled.

Canyon Lake played the second half mostly on Wimberley’s goal which was a complete turnaround that was seen that first half.

Mia Hernandez and Morgan Boles were all over the field and using their speed to get more tries on goal.

Then, with the clock running down to the two minute mark, Cassandra Gomez, was in the right spot when a ricochet ball bounced out of the herd and as soon as Gomez got the ball under control the shot made the net high and out of reach of the Texans goal keeper.

“I had been playing defense and then I got pushed up and I just told myself if I got the opportunity then take it,” Gomez said joyfully.

“I was screaming so hard that I lost my voice telling Cassandra to shoot it,” Fowler said gleefully.

On what was done for the different look in the second half, Gomez commented, “We brought another midfielder up for defense and that helped our offense, so a new formation is what helped make the change.”

That same pressure was evident all the way down until 0:00 was on the clock as Wimberley just could not solve the Hawk’s defense.

This win was huge for the Hawks and now a chance of making the playoffs for the second year in a row as the first round of district games are now in the books and Canyon Lake is perched above Seguin and Wimberley which are all vying for that last playoff spot.

An exciting game and a good win over our friends from up North.

Go Hawks!!
