Hawks in 2nd Place after Win over Texans, 7-6

Canyon Lake takes Wimberley, in an errorfest game on Friday night at the Hawk photodiamond, 7-6.

The Hawks had self inflicted adversity with 8 errors in this game and still found a way to win.

Go back these last couple of years and you can’t count the number of times this type of game would of been a loss. The ReSporter’s guess? A-lot!

“You can’t give a team so many extra at bats,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant sad errorlessly. “But it was time we got a chance to steal a game….they (Canyon Lake) could of sulked and started blaming each other, but they kept themselves up and battled through those mistakes.”

Canyon Lake had the lead for most of the game and this time the most important part of a game, that last inning.

Kyle Krohn was instrumental in this win with a hustle play down the first base line that resulted with Krohn standing on second base after an overthrow error for Wimberley.

An infield single off the bat of TJ Jones was another hustle play and put runners on the corners with just one out.

Then Garrett Winters froze the Texans on his suicide squeeze play on the very next pitch and Canyon Lake found themselves in second place for District 27-3A play with a respectable 2-1 record.

“He (Garrett Winters) handles the bat well and does not shrink from the moment,” Coach Dunavant said. “He is just a good competitive athlete.”

“All I was thinking about was getting the ball down and I did not know where to hit it just hit it,” Junior Winters said coldly. “We practice that all the time.”

“I haven’t seen that many errors but we will clean it up,” Winters continued. “It was our composure that kept us in this game and I never had a doubt we would lose and knew we were going to win.”

A tough non-district schedule has done some miraculous things for this team as they have crafted a ‘we will win’ attitude after forging a triple play, coming back from a seven run deficit with two outs, etc. In CL’s non-district games.

Defense was not on display on this night however, but when it was needed then those defensive plays were a delight to see coming at the right time.

Catcher Krohn played a role in that scenario, when he gunned down a Texan on a steal of second that would of put Wimberley in scoring position in the 7th inning, but that throw sealed the inning and gave the Hawks a chance to carry through with a win.

“Coach said be a catcher first,” Catcher Krohn said. “I saw him take off and I threw it as hard as I could and it was a perfect throw.”

On if Krohn was feeling pressure with the recently graduated best catcher in Hawk history, Michael Brady, in attendance, “He put a little pressure on me but this game became another win and got us one step closer to our goal.”

Nick Cahill also went yard with a three run dinger that gave the Hawks a 6-3 lead in the 4th inning.

That shot was a tribute to graduate Logan Felch, one of the all time leading home run hitters for Canyon Lake who was also in the stands.

In the beginning of this game I was not seeing the ball,” Centerfielder Cahill assessed. “I wanted to retaliate for striking out twice on my first two at bats and so I did.”

Cody Powell had been surviving through this game pitching, but errors gave Wimberley more at bats and finally wore down Powell’s effectiveness.

Tanner McGill was called in to get a save, but gave up a home run in the 6th inning, he then hit his next batter before inducing a flyball out to Tyler Vinson and a strikeout to limit the damages and that inning.

In the 7th inning McGill was dealing with another Texan on base after a fielding error, but was able to get a pop up to TJ Jones and then the Krohn throw out of a Texan trying to steal closing that inning.

Canyon Lake now finds themselves in a place not seen for a couple of years, a winning district record and looking good as this season continues to mature.

Nick Kissel will be on the mound next Tuesday when your Hawks take on first place Boerne at Canyon Lake.
