Hawks Can’t Hit Buzz Saw, Lose 1-0 to Texans

Wimberley.

The Hawks met another Texan pitcher that was, to put it lightly, on.

CL had three base runners for the night and was not able to get any momentum in this contest.

Justin Gray was the Texan inflicting the pain as he had two balls on only three batters with just one Hawk that ran a count to three balls for this game.

“We had to do something to get a runner to second base,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said.

Gray had just two innings with more than 10 pitches and in the last stanza, Gray struck out the side which caused his most pitches in an inning with 14.

Peyton Sipila was the only Hawk to reach base via a hit as Gray was on, he struck out 5 of his last 6 batters to surround that hit and end the game.

Canyon Lake’s Nick Kissell pitched a whale of a game too, but was battling Koufax (Gray) on this night.

The 5th inning was what stood out in this game for Kissell as Wimberley was able to get a Texas Leaguer and then another hit when Sipila vacated short stop to cover 2nd base that made it to centerfield.

Canyon Lake then needed to bring their infield and outfield in for the next two outs as Kissell induced a flyout to Nick Cahill who threw a strike into catcher Kyle Krohn preventing a run.

Kissell would strike out the next Texan on three pitches and an easy pop up to Vinson playing first for the final out and no damage done.

“I had my best stuff for the whole season tonight,” Nick Kissell pitched.

On how he approached his no outs and two man on situation, “I just needed to settle down and I told myself I still have to get three outs…we (Kyle Krohn) don’t do much talking in the dug out, but we are going to keep pitching the same pitches until they (batters) figure it out.”

“Kyle Krohn called every pitch and did an outstanding job and Kissell executed,” Coach Duanvant praised. “He (Kissell) gets better every time he goes out there…he has become a very good pitcher not just a thrower.”

Krohn was a thinking man during that tough 5th inning….”They (Texans) were at the bottom of their lineup and they had not been able to hit certain pitches and Kissell’s curve ball was good as well as his outside change-up and the batter would of had a weak swing trying to hit those balls.”

To put this game in other words, the Texans were not doing well offensively either and had their only run being unearned when CL committed an error with a Texan on third base.

Meanwhile Gray decided to throw just five pitches in the bottom of that same 5th inning moving the game along and saving a lot of baby sitting money for those fans that were able to get home much earlier than expected.

Canyon Lake has now lost five of their last six games and will need to right the ship against the toughest team in District 27-3A, Boerne, next week.

“We need to keep playing like we are playing,” Kissell said. “We need to come out of it and play…this is just baseball.”

“We have to persevere and battle,” Krohn assessed.
