Hawks Send Llano Home on Cold Bus in Win, 6-1

Canyon Lake started their season freezing the Yellowjackets with mid 30 degree weather and a solid, 6-1 victory.

“Outstanding early season game,” Head Coach Trent Dunavant said. “The key to this game was our pitchers being able to throw the curve ball for strikes.”

“We had productive at bats that gave us chances to win on a cold night,” Weatherman Dunavant forecast.

Cody Powell had control of his pitches while striking out 6 batters and putting zero’s on the score board for Llano, as the Yellowjackets could not warm up their game scoring 1 run in their last inning.

“Felt great,” Powell started after responding on what it felt like for his opening game. “I got more confident as the game progressed and on my ball movement.”

“I threw my curve ball for strikes for the team,” Powell finished. “Good game, but it was a little chilly.”

The Hawks scored enough runs in the first inning when Nick Cahill and Corey Shedrock worked consecutive walks after Garrett Winters was thrown out on a hard hit to second base.

Cody Powell then reached on a Llano error scoring CL’s first run.

With runners on the corner, DH Gordon McCleary singled bringing in Shedrock giving the Hawk pitching staff all the runs they would need for their opener.

Canyon Lake did a great job defensively with only one error, but what was even more impressive was how good Shedrock looked behind home plate.

Shedrock threw out a Yellowjacket attempting to steal and also kept all the pitches in front with no passed balls on clean picks.

“I have been working in practice,” Shedrock said as he produced from the batter’s box too.

“I waited for my pitch,” Shedrock said in response to his 2 hit game. “His (Llano’s pitcher) first pitch was a curve ball but then I got my pitch.

In the fourth inning, McCleary would reach base again on another error and then ran the bases on overthrows and wild pitches scoring a Hawk run without a hit.

There would be no doubt about the outcome after Canyon Lake scored their final runs in the fifth inning on three consecutive doubles.

Cahill, Shedrock, and Powell were the 3 Amigos in this inning with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Rory Preiss giving the Hawks their final run.

Powell and Tanner McGill combined for 9 strikeouts as McGill gave the crowd some exciting moments in his final two innings.

McGill got a routine ground out before two Yellowjackets responded with two singles.

After hitting the next batter, the bases were loaded and McGill would shut the door with two strikeouts, the last batter watching as if he was cold or something.

Hawk fans had that warm fuzzy feeling in the frigid air for their ride home after this solid effort.

Great pitching, with timely hits and top it off with only one error did the trick, 6-1.

Now CL will be at Marble Falls this week for their Tournament with all eyes on the weather to see how high this Hawk team will be able to fly.
