CLJV Split with Gonzales to finish Year
Hawks JV split their games with Gonzales, Monday night after a razor thin loss in the night cap, 3-2.
Runs galore in the first game (CLJV 14 Gonz 7) turned to finding runs anyway you could in the night cap and Gonzales finding one more run in the win.
Canyon Lake did use four pitchers in the night game as Coach Brandon Durst was quick with the trigger once a Hawk Pitcher found it rough going.
Avery Montgomery was, johnny on the spot, as his stint on the mound helped keep the game close when he entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the 3rd inning.
“I was hoping I could throw strikes and I got my confidence up and then started throwing as hard as I could,” Montgomery said with precision. “When I start a game I find it harder to fall into a rhythm than when I close a game.”
Ten pitches later, this young man had struck out the side and helped keep their 2 run deficit in tack and a chance of playing for a win.
Montgomery retired 9 batters in a row when he was hit by a line shot to his ankle and that would eventually cause an early exit the next inning.
“He (Montgomery) took a line drive and I just left it up to him on how long he wanted to stay on the mound,” Coach Durst said.
Montgomery did record an out on that hit but his control and rhythm did suffer on that play.
Canyon Lake got their first run when Keith Hutson drew a full count walk and then advanced on a sharp single by Parker Reno that eventually had Hustson score when the left fielder over threw his throw.
Parker advanced to third base on the Apache error and later scored on a wild pitch that tied up the score 2-2.
Gonzales scored in the seventh inning with a double and a passed ball scoring the winning run.
The Hawks did threaten in their half of the inning after a single off the batt of Drew Tyra. Canyon Lake was left 90 feet from tying after the last two Hawks could not get their bat on the ball.
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity Team started playing a better game as they also had a win and loss in the tournament last weekend after rain halted the tournament on Saturday.
“We were real dicey at the beginning of the year and we had some players that were pulled up to the varsity,” Coach Durst started. “We were in some sticky situations but these players got better as the year progressed and they grew as a team and they became good stewards of the game.”
On what is next for these Hawk’s and specifically Montgomery? “I am going to play some summer ball and keep practicing and getting better.”
That has to be music to Coach Durst ears.
