Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity started their season with a hard fought win over Blanco this past Thursday night at the Hawk Nest.

The 6 point win can be attributed to the Hawk defense as this group of players literally shut the Panthers down in the 2nd half allowing the 6 point lead to be good enough for this win.

Blanco had just 23 total yards in the second half with just one first down and Canyon Lake was able to get that last score in the 4th quarter.

“Coach Hooper challenged them to be better tacklers in the second half,” Head JV Coach Greene said to the point. “They (Blanco) are real good at what they do.”

This game started with CLJV drawing first blood when they drove 70 yards on their very first drive after an 8 yard pass from Jacob Neel to Connor Rose on 3rd down.

That pass would be the only completion for this evening but when you complete one pass then a touchdown will work out

well.

The Hawks fumbled on their next possession and Blanco took advantage driving 48 yards on 7 straight runs for paydirt and a tied score going into halftime.

Blanco would have their offense on the field 4 times in that 2nd Half and the only first down in this half was accomplished with 3:31 left on the game clock.

The Panthers were still in the game and had 17 yards on their first two plays and then the Hawk defense would not allow another yard for Blanco’s last chance to get a score and possible win.

“We had to get into the right mindset,” Defensive Lineman Keaton Rhea said. “Coming out of halftime we had to solve some of our mistakes in the first half and we fixed it.”

A defensive player that gets to the point just like those Hawk players did going after any Panther with a ball.

Rose finished with 83 yards for the night while 6 more Hawks got the rock and doubled the total rushing yards by Blanco.

Newcomer, Caleb Almond had a respectable 45 yards and Landry Moore finished with 26 yards on just 4 carries but what is not seen is how well the runners blocked for their teammates on many of those running plays.

Rolando Maronge scored the winning touchdown and had 6 touches for 36 yards.

Maronge was on the Gold Team last season and this was a great testament on how this chance to play on that Gold team helped many of the players.

“Coach said that if you want to move up then you would need to work out and I have a no quit attitude,” Maronge said with resolve. “My Brother gives me inspiration….he was born deaf and partially blind…”

Players would have been on the bench for most of their games last season if a Gold team would have not been formed.

Now Maronge played and worked his way into a prominent roll on CL’s JV squad.

Students have growth spurts at different times and being relegated to the bench might have been the final nail for many players after sitting on the bench and not having a chance to play.

Canyon Lake JV was beaten by Blanco last season and this time the Hawks were going to make this time right.

“We respect them,” Maronge said. “But deep down we knew we were better.”

Congratulations Hawks and now get ready for another test when you play a 5A school next week.
