Baseball: CL Hawks End 1st Tourney with 2 Wins

Canyon Lake matched last year’ win total this past weekend during the Marion Tournament that was cut short due to the weather.

Will Gore is ready for more wins this season.

The Hawks were able to get two games in on Saturday and both games had good results for a team that would welcome any good news.

“I was pleased with the overall progress this weekend,” Head Coach Victor Escamilla exclaimed. “We did some good things and saw some things that we need to fix…..our goal is to be hitting on all cylinders by district play.”

CL had two dominating games from the mound when Avery Montgomery pitched a one hitter in a 5 inning contest that had the Hawks scoring 7 runs on 5 hits.

Montgomery had command of the strike zone after giving up just one walk and throwing 56 strikes out of 74 offers. That will result in wins more often than naught.

In the opening 1 run loss to Llano that opened the season, Montgomery continued to show that he will be called upon throughout this year if his command on the mound continues.

First Baseman CJ Parrish who finished the day going 1 for 3 batting commented on his thoughts after the two wins, “Overall we did good, but the mental side of the game needs to improve.”

Well said, as comments such as those will make Coach Escamilla smile from ear to ear.

Lead-off hitter Caleb Williams was the catalyst needed in the two wins as this Short-Stop had an impressive day at the plate by reaching base 4 of the 7 times he came to bat.

Mima's says good game Freshman Hawks!!

                       Go Hawks!!

Two walks and two hits is just the formula needed from the top of the batting order.

“I see us striving towards the goal of winning every pitch throughout every game and giving us a chance to win.

That second game went just 3 innings with three Hawk pitchers who combined for no-hits and getting help from CL’s batters with Williams and Kyle Doerfler scoring after starting the game getting on base.

Taking the mound was Drew Tyra, Matt Anderson, and Peyton McMullen for one inning each and if you take away those 6 walks during their stint on the mound, the most important item rested in not allowing any runs. Heart aches yes, but no runs….

Canyon Lake will be back in action this next week-end when the Hawks travel to Devine for another tournament, March 1 – 3.

Go Hawks!!
