CL Hawks Break Even in Marion Tourney & Play Gonzales Tuesday
Canyon Lake Boy’s Basketball broke even after splitting their 4 game tourney at Marion over last weekend.
Two close games on that first day that was followed by two games that was all or nothing to finish those contests.
The Lake now find themselves going into this week’s games with a 3-3 record and having a chance of breaking that deadlock when they travel to Gonzales this Tuesday and then follow that first official road game with the CL Classic Tournament this weekend.
CL continues working on their more up-tempo game as each week gets closer to district play.
One player that seems to be playing a consistent brand of round-ball is Junior Trent MacRoberts who has been an all-round player in the last 5 battles.
A shade below 10 points per game during that stretch while shooting and contributing in all phases of the game.
Last 5 games for MacRoberts Stats: 3pt tot rebounds fgm-fga fgm-fga ftm-fta pts total a s b MacRoberts 20-38 3-6 5-10 48 27 7 6 5 Pct/Ave 53% 50% 50% 9.6 5.4 1.4 1.2 1.0
Those per game numbers will come in handy as this year’s of games mature and if that consistency continues then Coach Lucas Chapman will need a trip to the Dentist for a teeth cleaning because of his smile.
Canyon Lake has the makings of a decent team when you are able to put a Parker Mott on the floor with instance offense along with Sam Schimank starting to find his range and being another player for the Hawks to count on for accumulating those ‘other’ stats that helps make a team hard to guard.
Jeremy Duncan has blossomed with his guard play and when this player is hot can add to more headaches for opponents. Duncan is one of the fastest Hawks with the ball which has shown the ability to dish out some assists by beating opposing players downs he court for those back breaking plays.
Another player that has not missed a step is Anthony Zavala who ranks in the top 3 this season in points (70), free throws made (13), offensive (15), defensive (31) rebounds, and finally blocks (5).
Zavala is not the biggest player that Canyon Lake has played in the paint these past few years, but his energy and speed will many time even that playing field as those numbers above will show.
The Hawks have enough players that are contributing and for a running offense, that will be a strength, as that pace has the opportunity to pay dividends as this season continues with these players starting to have a sense where a teammate will be for a pass/shot/etc.
Ben Rowe, Nic Rivera, Rylee Spaulding, Luke Mendez, Chandler Hunt and JT Greene have all been contributing.
Rico Griffin started slow but is still a contributor leading the team in rebounds (54) and being one of four Hawks with double figure assists.
One bad game on this 4 game stint against Marion, but that game was followed by CL’s best game of the tourney in beating Gregory-Portland.
Now this week, Canyon Lake will see if they can find that consistency from more players to help carry this year to new heights.
Go Hawks and Beat Gonzales!!
