Canyon Lake Go 2-1 in District Play after Win over Llano, 45-29

Peyton McMullen putting pressure on a YelloJacket in Hawk win.

Canyon Lake Varsity ran their District 28-4A record to 2-1 after taking care of Llano on the road to the tune of, 45-29.

                  Go Hawks!!

“We played a sloppy game but our defense started the game ok but we will have to get better than that,” Head Coach Lucas Chapman said. “Peyton (McMullen) and Ben (Rowe) stepped up and played well….and I liked the way Patrick (McAuliffe) played and he was our vocal leader.”

“I was excited to come out and play,” Rowe said on his thoughts going into this game. “This was my first start for a district game.”

On what his thinking was after his first 3 pointer make, “Once I make one then it will boost my confidence.”

Rowe did contribute with 3 steals, 5 rebounds, and sinking two 3 pointers in the game.

The Hawk’s next game will be on the road in Fredericksburg….a team that has yet to lose. A tall order to be sure, but that is why they play the game…..you never know.

In this game, The Lake, trailed to start the game, 2-0 but that would be the extent for this Yellowjacket team as they did not score again with a put-back with no time left on the clock. Meanwhile, CL had posted 15 points that started on a 3 pointer from Ben Rowe and ended when Rico Griffin completed a 3 pointer the old fashion way after being fouled on a made attempt.

That was when sloppy was introduced at the first quarter break and continued through much of the game from that point on.

Peyton McMullen made his presence known with 4 blocks while leading Canyon Lake with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Griffin had been the leader with rebounds for the past 7 contests.

Ben Rowe took advantage in his first start for district play.

Canyon Lake was able to increase their lead to 23 points to start the 4th quarter and that would allow the bench to be emptied as these Hawks coasted to their dressing room with their 14th win. With two more victories this Hawk team will be tied with the most since the school started.

This next week will close out that first round of district games and a split would go a long way in securing a higher seed in post-season play.

Go Hawks!!
