CLJV Baseball Suffers First Set-Back to Unicorns, 3-2
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity Baseball team suffered their first loss of the season after a late score by the Unicorn JV in the top of the 4th to send the Hawks home with a loss, 3-2.
Tough loss after giving up just one hit…but not finding the strike zone did CL in on this day of action that would seal this set-back.
“I felt real good out there today and my arm felt great,” Hawk’s Pitcher Bade Holland parted. “I just with I would have thrown a few more strikes today. This outing is something we will build upon.”
Good words for Holland in knowing the season is in its infancy and there will be many more innings that can give a team time for a rebound.
New Braundels was able to get on top to open the game after opening up with a single by Leita.
Leita is a lead-off hitter for a reason as his speed resulted in a stolen base and then advancing on a ground out. A wild-pitch would score the first run and set things in motion.
A walk to Netardus and another steal had another Unicorn in scoring position, but a strikeout by Holland gave NB their second out. Then two passed balls would score the second run with only one hit and a two run deficit.
Canyon Lake would answer an inning later when Zach Elson drew a one-out walk that would result get CL back into the game being down just one run, 2-1.
With two outs, CLJV responded with a single off the bat of Marshall McConnell and a Brett Harwell single to right field that allowed McConnell to reach 3rd base and in scoring position. With the top of the batting order, Brayden Welch did not disappoint in working a walk that would have McConnell scoring on a wild pitch.
“I saw the ball well at the plate today,” Harwell recounted. “I am just trying to see the ball better and stay confident with the bat.”
Short and sweet for this towering Hawk player.
So, up to this point, 4 runs had scored without a player getting an rbi and putting all the pressure on each team’s battery by passed balls and wild pitches.
After a scoreless 3rd inning, the Unicorns would get what would be the winning score, when they responded with a one-out batter that was hit by a pitch.
Then consecutive walks loaded the bases with still just one out to work with and CL would get closer with a chance to escape damage after a comebacker for reliever Austin Bowers back to Catcher Cody Jones that left the bases loaded but now working with 2 outs.
A Leita bases loaded walk would get a score that would end up being enough after a Hawk scoreless inning.
A close encounter that could have the team realizing a win with some better control and mounting some offense that was part of this teams arsenal during the first part of this season.
Canyon Lake’s Junior Varsity will be back in action today when they meet Canyon JV at the Hawk Nest for a 11am start.
