Lady Soccer: Hawks Never Trail in Win over Gateway Gators in Bi-District, 3-1
Canyon Lake Lady Soccer team scored a big upset in never trailing Georgetown Gateway, 3-1.
This win improved CL’s record setting record to 15-8-2 as they will prepare for a Tuesday Area battle with Pleasanton Eagles at Alamo Heights High School on Tuesday starting at 7:00pm.
An easier time than that last Bi-District conquest in 2016 when the Hawks won in two overtimes beating the Taylor Ducks, 2-1.
Gateway, on paper, came into this contest with a manicured, 16-3-2 season which included an undefeated district record, 11-0. This team’s downfall was playing on a neutral field as their record in that type of venue is now, 0-3-1 which tells you this school could have been undefeated during the regular season excluding those rascally neutral contests.
These Gators gave up 3 goals only twice this year and came into this contest riding a 13 game winning streak, that did have one tie to La Grange in their warm-up game, before meeting the Hawks.
La Grange beat Navasota, 4-0 in their Bi-District game.
“I was super happy for the girls,” Head Coach Kara Stracener started. “This was not a David & Goliath story but Gateway was not used to being scored on (12 shut-outs this season) and we had experienced coming from behind and having to battle for wins.”
Canyon Lake was purposeful with the scheduling by being in battles with larger schools and coming in as an underdog in several of those contests.
On the players and their game, “Gabi Pace (a freshman) got us going and it helped when she scored first and having Alondra DeLeon back in the middle helped our game,” Coach Stracener continued. “Seniors Anna Hettinger and Karleigh Schedlbauer who scored our last goal was huge.”
“We had several who contributed defensively as impact players,” Stracener continued. “If a team had a scouting report on us, they would have a hard time finding who would be the person to stop as all of our players contributed in some way.”
On what was talked bout during halftime being up by a goal, “I did not make it comfortable because I was disappointed in the team not doing those little things, so I was not pleasant…I did not want them to be comfortable because being up one goal does not mean you are in control and we needed the girls to do those little things and start communicating and get a sense of urgency,” Coach Stracener admonished.
On their next opponent in Pleasanton and what it means in having an earlier win against these Eagles.
“When you are in district then you play everyone twice and have an idea of how they might react when that next game comes around…I do not want our team to get caught up with who they are playing. We are not playing Pleasanton we are playing Soccer this Tuesday,” Coach Stracener finished with resolve.
The Eagles will be the next rung on a ladder that continues this magical season and a chance for more goals to be set and scored.
Canyon Lake has a blend of Seniors to Freshman on this roster with interchangeable players that can hopefully present enough problems and another Hawk Win!!
