Canyon Lake had one of the most eccentric seasons last year from losing coin flips to Covid cancellations and through those road blocks being thrown all over the roads, the Hawks managed to have a successful season within an eye-lash of getting to the 3rd round in the post-season..

                Let’s Go Hawks!!

Lost Coin flips ended up costing CL a home game and Covid had the same affect when Taylor had to cancel leading to just 3 home cooking meals.

This year CLHS will go back to their original schedule that was scrapped last season when two 5A schools (Alamo Heights and Georgetown East View) had their season postponed a month.

That had teams playing 5A/6A schools like CL scurrying to find two replacement games that had to match those same two dates and filling those vacancies.  Canyon Lake found Jourdanton and Beeville filling those voids.

District 14-4A would also end up being one of the toughest with Austin LBJ making it to the Final 4 and Lampasas bowing out in the 2nd round as well as your Hawks.

“Our schedule was tough when we made it,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “After all the things that happened it was still tough but not as dangerous.”

World’s Finest say Hawks are Too!

“We knew we had a chance to be good….but that was our whole plan,” Coach Drum stated when asked the differences between the first and that final rendition schedule turned out to be.”

Going into last year there was not much known about Heights and East View as both schools did have questions after having sub-par seasons in their previous season.

In fact both schools won their first round and faced each other the next week with East View coming out on top, 48-14. EV lost in the next round but not before scoring 64 points in that loss giving the Hawk Nation a good idea of what this next campaign might have in store.

“This is why last year we set up a tough schedule,” Coach Drum beat. “It was set up to be ready for our tough district,”

That certainly played out as the Hawks was at the Calallen’s doorstep in taking a win in that 2nd round losing this game in the 4th quarter after leading throughout.

“We have so many that are close together in their skill set and that will allow us to give them reps on both sides of the ball because we are really deep allowing us to use some players for defense,” Coach Drum stated in response to the amount of running backs and knowing some of those players will need to change from offense to defense to have playing time.

“It is fun watching these kids growing up and watching how they compete….they don’t like to lose and have a winning tradition,” Drum was commenting of this year’s sophomore class that has yet to lose a district race from their Mountain Valley years. Those championships were from top to bottom as it was achieved by the 7th & 8th grades in both the A & B squads during that run.

“We will be tweaking some stuff.” Coach Drum continued, “We lost a good offensive line and quarterback and that will be our two questions on who will be taking over for those positions. It will be a big deal on where to put them.”

DB Blayne Carnes is one of many Hawks ready to get defensive!!

“Our strength will be at nose guard and the defensive line and our game plan will still be a smash mouth team. They (the kids) will have to be ready to compete when they get those reps and will have some versatility on our offensive and defensive sides.”

“Fredericksburg and Burnet will be better so our schedule will help prepare us for our district battles,” Coach Drum closed.

A little over 10 weeks before the football gear gets strapped on for a team that will be hoping to continue a hot streak with those Sophomores being a year older and ready for a two year run.

Let’s Go Hawks!!
