Wimberley Leaves Little Doubt They are Better Team, 20-03
The season does not get easier with a date in La Grange next week.
Canyon Lake started their season against a 3rd ranked Wimberley team that proved they should have another long post season sojourn after holding the Hawks to 104 total yards.
“They put pressure on our quarterbacks all game long and we gave up some big plays and could not have that same pressure on their quarterback,” Head Coach Charley Drum said. “That was a senior dominated team and we will have to get a lot better…we just have to get better.”
That offensive total ranks 2nd all-time as the lowest output trailing the Sealy game back during the 2010 season. The 66 yards rushing ranks last since the slot-t offense was installed in 2013.
CL has a 7-7 record for opening night contests and have averaged 16 points in those battles. With this loss, Canyon Lake dips below .500 with a 73-74 slate while playing non-district teams will go into next week’s La Grange game one game below .500 record, 33-34.
The Texan’s had some big plays offensively that helped on scoring drives while keeping the Hawk’s slot-t under 2 yards per carry average.
On CL’s second quarter scoring drive, the Hawks traveled down to the Texan 9 yard line with a heavy dose of Matthew Soza rushing on 9 of those 18 plays for 42 yards. The Hawks were also helped by converting two first downs by Texan penalties with one converting a 4th down.
Dalton Stanley kicked a 26 yarder giving him 4 makes on 5 tries in his career. That field goal would have been good from 40 yards.

A football axiom says a team will improve the most between that first and second game. That was a truism last season after a two point set-back to Wimberley that was followed with the best (yardage wise) offensive showing ever by the Hawks over La Grange.
A decent defensive effort that had enough break-downs to give the Texans a dominating win against a defense that was solid in controlling CL’s slot-t.
Losing the turnover battle off set those helpful Wimberley penalties which had Canyon Lake searching for an offensive rhythm that just never materialized.
Wimberley is ranked 3rd in the State and certainly did not disappoint in making a statement for another year with The Lake and keeping the Battle of the Backbone Trophy at Wimberley High School.
Canyon Lake will travel to La Grange next Friday in hopes of having improvement across the board as this year’s tough schedule will not have many weeks of taking a game by just showing up.
