CL Hawks Finish District as 2nd Seed in Win over Wolves, 7-3

Canyon Lake finished their regular season with another 8-2 district record and finished 2nd in the league behind Boerne and will welcome Cuero to the Post-Season next week.

                   Let’s Go Hawks!!

CLHS scored 5 unanswered runs in those final two innings that erased a one run deficit (2-3) in that 5th inning and the Hawks contributed 6 of their 11 hits in those final two stanzas which wrestled  a Wolf lead for a win in another hard fought battle, 7-3.

“They (Davenport) hit the ball well and they play hard,” Head Baseball Coach Victor Escamilla said in response to playing another hard district contest.”

On who the MVP of this outing was, “Jeremy (Greene) staying alive having two strikes and dumping his hit in right field.”

That at bat was in the 6th right after Davenport had taken a lead back that left just two more frames to play. Greene’s hit scored Brody Ross a courtesy runner after a Tanner Schultz walk.

This run was scored with two outs and then one pitch later Brayden Welch would score on a wild pitch and a Hawk lead that would not be relinguished.

                       Way to Go Hawks!!

CL’s big guns were silent for most of this contest. It was the foresome of Chase Anderson, Hunter Anderson, Ty Sellers and Griffen Williams. These 4 players were a combined 0-14 and have a combined 140 hits this year or 60% of those base hits. This group would form an Insurance Company that resulted in 3 critical insurance runs before the Wolves final at bat.

Tanner Schultz had been the only player of those top 5 spots in the lineup that had not been slumping.

Good news for Canyon Lake with the rest of their batting order being able to take the lead in this game, 4-3 and for the second game in a row that included a last inning win on Tuesday.

Greene was instrumental on both nights along with Welch and Baker who reached base anyway possible. Take a look at those stats below of those 3 players.

Schultz would be the winning pitcher after scattering 9 hits during his 5 innings of work with no walks.

                  Go Hawks Beat Cuero!!

That would be good enough for a save opportunity for Luke Roskin who finished saving that lead after giving up just one hit and striking out 2 while not giving up a walk to snuff any hope for Davenport.

Canyon Lake is in search for a hitter for that one batter in the line-up that still has not produced on a consistent bases. There are 8 players that presently have a .250 batting average or above.

But the rest of this team, having 143 at bats, has an anemic .161 batting average.

This contest had Andrew Miller as that designator hitter and he finished with a hit in 3 at bats.

Luke Roskin & Andrew Miller after finishing regular season with a win.

On how Miller comes to bat knowing that an opening still exists for this group of players, “I can’t get a hit unless I put it in play,” Miller said when posed the question. “I don’t think about the at bat…I just work on trying to put it in play.”

On what this victory meant for the program, “This was a big one over our, ‘Little Brother’,” Miller closed. “This win helps with our seeding.”

It was on April 2nd when Roskin took the mound on a Saturday start when District 28-4A had just started. Roskin came into this game against 5A Boerne Champion being undefeated and a 1.67 era but in this start this Sophomore could not record an out in his first inning which came with a learning opportunity.

With a discussion with Coach Escamilla, Roskin learned that he needed to have a better routine during his warm-ups before taking the field. Since that fateful day, Roskin has come on as a good reliever and on those 4 times Coach Escamilla has called for him this young man has delivered.

             Go Hawks & Beat Cuero!!

On the difference in that Boerne Champion game and where Roskin is at the end of the regular season, “Mentally I have a lot of confidence in myself. I love relieving because I’m coming in with more pressure and I love those situations. Ever since that Champion game I can’t break my routine because I have a superstition with my routine before each game.”

Canyon Lake will be back in action on Friday when they meet up with Cuero Gobblers who finished as a 3rd Seed from District 27-4A.

This will be a one game playoff being played in San Marcos at Texas State with first pitch starting 4pm.

CL has reached that 20 win plateau for the 2nd season in a row and will now start with another chance of advancing past their 3rd round exit during their last campaign.

Way to Go Hawks!!
