CL Hawk’s Lose on Last Second Field Goal to Veterans, 31-28
Another close outcome as the learning continues during a murderous row of top schools in non-district play and a loss to Veterans on a last second field goal, 31-28.
“We’ve been playing good football teams and we knew that when we made the schedule and that was the closest we have spent in playing a full game,” Head Coach Charley Drum stated. “But we still have to clean up some things…the special teams hurt us some tonight with the punt…field positions on kick-offs and little things like that are going to cost you when you are in a tight game.”
Coach Drum closed, “We have time to clean that up and we have two weeks to get it right for that district run and the big picture is that when district starts everyone is, 0-0 and we have been battle tested and hopefully we can get that turned around.”
Bad News & Good News once again started with a slow start as the 3rd game this year has seen CL behind the 8 ball being down by 2 touchdowns or more.
Good News is seeing a team that can overcome those deficits after finishing each of those games within a score of having a chance to pull off an upset.
Bad News is being in the midst of playing one of the toughest 4A schedules in the state with a 6A school being next up on the table.
Good News is knowing that all district games will be pitted against 4A schools (obviously) and knowing that your partners in District 13-4A have not been playing as tough opponents.
Bad News is not knowing when CL will ever catch a break…with each loss it was either special teams (Veterans Memorial), Defensive woes (Boerne Champion), or Offensive woes (Wimberley).
Good News is also knowing that with each week there have been opportunities to right those miscues which has been witnessed in those areas with improvements that next week.
Wimberley helped the Hawks realize that using a passing game can alleviate those ‘every player in the box’ teams with a passing game that helps loosen those clogged running gaps.
Boerne Champion showed Canyon Lake that they can score points and watching how well the defense responded to a Veterans team that had track meet speed all over the field and slowing that weapon down to being manageable with their precipitancy in that 2nd half.
A win would have been golden but Canyon Lake’s bigger goal is being ready for district without allowing these past 4 weeks to invite doubt to their table.
Canyon Lake’s first drive was better but still had the same result by garnering no points. It was a 12 play drive ending at the Patriots’ 21 yard line.
CL came alive scoring twice during the 2nd quarter but special teams went awry in missing those point after touchdown opportunities. That certainly changes how coaches make decisions during those 4th quarter situations.
A punting average in the 20’s and kick-offs allowing Veterans Memorial average starting 55 yards from scoring will put added pressure on CL’s defense. Hence leading the yardage war by 85 yards but having to go further will on drives can lead in having a play or two that can stop a drive.
Good News was seeing CL able to keep VM out of their end zone for two quarters which helped seeing a tied game near the end of regulation with a chance for a ending scoring drive or overtime.
Can those situations improve when those district curtains are unveiled in two weeks?
That is unknown but playing a tough schedule does not hurt the most important aspect for any Hawk players, what is happening between those two ear holes in The Lake’s helmet.
Sophomore running back James Garza finished with 102 yards and was followed with Helijah Johnson’s 98 yards of tough running.
Glimpses of a good passing game during the first half going silent as the game matured can hopefully see more consistency in that realm.
Getting stops was more prevalent against a team that was averaging 47 points per outing shows the Good News that is coming in future battles.
A loss (Bad News) but playing another tough 5A school in losing by 3 points shows the improvement and knowing this Hawk team will be ready for their 6A foe on the road this week.
Good News or Bad News will be answered in a few short weeks!!
Go Good News Hawks!!
