Canyon Lake JV win another game getting one more victory closer to a District 26-4A Championship, 25-18, 23-25, 25-15.

This Hawk club is a heart attack waiting to happen as they have a way of going 3 sets in almost all of their district games.

On this night in their game with Cuero, the Hawk’s JV team decided to lose the second set where in the past the first set was that contest with the first loss.

“We get comfortable and then our communication broke down in that second set,” Head JV Coach Megan Helmey said. “We talked about wanting to defend their district title and start trusting each other and show this team (Cuero) who we are.”

So on this night the district leading JV Hawks would need to win the two book end sets for keeping their chance of staying in first a reality.

In that clinching third set, CLJV, used a 6 point rally serve by Hanna White and a finishing 5 point rally with Felicity Niestemski  to close the Gobblers out.

An integral play from Riley Mickey was key in making a 11-12 set score into outscoring Cuero 14-3 in the 10 point victory, 25-15 to finish the game.

“When I see the corners open then that is when you have a chance to catch them out of place,” Freshman Mickey said in response to having the idea of sending the ball over for a point.

Mickey did not start on the Junior Varsity team but has seemed to jell in with the JV squad as this year’s games comes to a close.

“I was really nervous when I was first moved up at the beginning,” Mickey recalled. “I think I have a chance to improve my skills.”

This group of athletes will be filling the places of that strong class of Seniors and watching this team forge into a chance of winning the district is good news as Canyon Lake continues to put a stamp on being a Volleyball school.

Good play from Alysha Perez and Kaylie Duke helped get the avalanche of points over on the Gobblers and win another game in 3 sets.

CLJV ran out to a big win during that first and last set to keep their first place seat in it’s rightful place going into the last two games.

Wimberley will certainly try to dethrone CL and that last game will be played against the only school to win over Canyon Lake this season.

Two more games and hopefully, the Hawks will be crowning two Champions for this year’s group of players.

Go Hawks!!
