Hawks Suffer from Fumbleitis in Loss to Taylor, 31-28

CL Lake Hawks come down with ‘Fumbleitis’ in loss to Taylor on Saturday afternoon, 31-28.

Senior Matt Adams is not finished yet.

Senior Matt Adams is not finished yet.

“Defensively we did real well,” Head Coach Charley Drum started. “We have had problems this year (with fumbles) and I hated this for our seniors.”

Coach Drum continued, “They took care of the ball and we gave a talented team field position all game with our fumbles.”

The Hawks could not stand prosperity as they went bankrupt in giveaways by coughing up 5 lost fumbles in this winnable contest.

Taylor jumped out to a quick 9 point lead before Canyon Lake responded with 4 consecutive touchdown drives and what many thought was a comfortable halftime lead, 28-9.

First play of the second half? A Hawk fumble and then the Ducks took over and scored quickly which helped in getting the Taylor fans to hold off on leaving to see if there might be more early Christmas presents from Canyon Lake.

Christmas would come early and often, as the Hawks scattered those miscues throughout the rest of this game giving Taylor chances for a comeback and eventual win.

Taylor averaged over 400 yards offensively this season and the Hawks defense did hold the Ducks to 131 yards less than their average which would be a good sign for a chance in getting a victory.

CL’s offense would go silent in the second half as the Hawks only counter with 89 yards and by adding those costly fumbles, it proved to be too much to overcome.

The Hawks and Ducks have now played two games with both games being decided by 3 and 2 points as this is a team Canyon Lake just can’t finish.

In that first half, Canyon Lake did have success in the running game as Jacob Ruff would finish with his first century mark rushing game while the bag of tricks, Senior Matt Adams, broke his jet sweep for 64 yards and a ton of momentum going into the halftime locker room.

“We just got to find out if we want to win,” a disappointed Adams said. “We (the seniors) have to convey that every game matters and we will have a chance to redeem ourselves next week.”

Canyon Lake has a reputation these past couple of years that they can bounce back after tough losses and now the Hawks will need to respond against Boerne as they go into the playoff season.

What a tale of two halves as this game could not have ended any worse as Taylor was opening their presents with reckless abandon.

Canyon Lake has clinched a chance for more games, but instead of playing for a second seed, CL will need to beat Boerne to get a third seed for the playoff season.
